Recap: NY Mets vs. Cincinnati

Sports Network | July 11, 2009

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Johan Santana threw seven shutout innings and Jeff Francoeur had a two-run single in his first at-bat as a Met, as New York beat Cincinnati, 4-0, at Citi Field.

Francoeur, who was acquired from the Braves on Friday for fellow outfielder Ryan Church, had two hits as the Mets finally found some offense to win for just the second time in eight games. Angel Pagan tripled and scored twice for New York, which had scored 10 runs in its previous seven contests.

Santana (10-7) allowed five hits, walked one and had five strikeouts to snap a two-start losing streak. He's now 3-0 lifetime against the Reds.

Reds outfielder Jay Bruce fractured his right wrist in the first inning. With runners on first and second and no outs, David Wright sent a bloop to right field. Bruce charged to try and make the catch, but he landed awkwardly on his wrist as it folded backward. He was removed from the game and went in for x-rays, which showed the fracture.

Bruce will fly back to Cincinnati for a further examination and more treatment, but he's expected to be out at least 4-to-6 weeks.

Johnny Cueto (8-6) surrendered nine hits and four runs over five innings to suffer his second straight loss.

The Reds totaled just six hits in the middle installment of the three-game series. Cincinnati lost for the fifth time in seven contests.

The Mets sent nine men to the plate in scoring three times in the first inning. Pagan singled and Luis Castillo walked. Wright's hit loaded the bases, and one out later Francoeur hit a blooper over the head of first baseman Joey Votto to make it 2-0. Daniel Murphy walked before Omir Santos singled to center for a three-run cushion.

Pagan led off with a triple in the second and Luis Castillo followed with a base hit to right field.

Santana escaped a jam in the seventh when the Reds put two men on base. Pedro Feliciano pitched the eighth inning and Francisco Rodriguez tossed the ninth for the Mets.

The Mets optioned outfielder Nick Evans to Triple-A Buffalo and signed infielder Angel Berroa to a minor league contract. Berroa was claimed off waivers from the Yankees and assigned to Buffalo...Santana has 1,699 career strikeouts...Votto extended his hitting streak to a career-best 14 games by singling in the first inning.
