We had some fun the other day debating the Pinstripe Alley Yankee Team of the Decade. Good points were raised on several controversial choices.

Along the way, some of you asked for the 'Worst Yankees of the Decade' team. I thought that would be fun, so I decided to take a shot at it.

Looking at the rosters over the years, though, I found it almost impossible to narrow it down to a single team. Instead, position-by-position, here are some of the most forgettable -- and regrettable -- Yankees of the past decade.

I am sure there are many other names that could or should be added to this list. But, this should get you started strolling down the wrong side of Yankee Memory Lane.

I am ashamed to admit so many guys like this have worn the pinstripes during the course of the last decade. Yuck!

MLB.com has named their top minor leaguers for each of baseball's 30 clubs. During the preseason, they predicted Eric Young Jr. would be the Rockies' top hitter, while Jhoulys Chacin was to be the top pitcher. Things changed a bit at the end of the season, as MLB.com has gone with Christian Friedrich as the club's best pitcher and Kiel Roling as the best hitter.

It's time for the BBWAA to start considering their selections for the Hall Of Fame's class of 2010. Two former Rockies - Ellis Burks and Andres Galarraga - appear on the ballot for the first time while another, Dale Murphy, stays on there for the 11th consecutive year. It's probably farfetched to say that any of these guys have a legitimate chance of getting in at any point.

Sal Fasano, who seemed to do a great job in mentoring young Rockies pitchers in Colorado Springs this past season, will be managing Toronto's Class A affiliate in Lansing. Congratulations to Sal, who will hopefully excel in his new role. :C

Rockies Venezuelan League Update
Good news on the VZL front for the Rockies, as it looks like Jhoulys Chacin has shown some improvement over the course of their season. Chacin went five innings and allowed just one hit and one walk and apparently displayed good control. As the author mentions, it was probably Chacin's last start of the VZL season. Also, Edgmer Escalona pitched a perfect inning in his league debut.

Carlos Gonzalez blessed by "La Chinita"
Carlos Gonzalez had a good few days in the Venezuelan League last week, as he hit .454 in 22 at-bats during "Feria de la Chinita." The blurb mentions Gonzalez injured himself sliding last weekend and had to be subbed out, but I imagine it isn't anything serious, as there has been no report from the Rockies.

AAA Colorado Springs, W 7-5 - (62-56, 1st)

The Sky Sox held on late to snap their four game losing streak, winning 7-5 over the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals). Damian Moss threw five scoreless innings in the start, and Mike Timlin tossed a scoreless inning, allowing a hit and a walk but striking out two. Scott Munter and Matt Belisle nearly blew the 7-0 lead by allowing 5 runs on 5 hits in the last two innings.

Sal Fasano drove in two with two doubles, scoring twice. Jonathan Herrera, Mike McCoy and Matt Miller each had two hits. Every starter reached base except Eric Young Jr., who was 0-for-4, ending an 8-game hitting streak.

The Sky Sox have an off day today as the travel to New Orleans to play the Zephyrs (Marlins) Friday night. Brandon Hynick will face Luis Ayala. Jhoulys Chacin was optioned to AAA yesterday, so the Rockies top prospect will have a Sky Sox uni for the first time in his career.

AA Tulsa, W 10-9 - (25-20, 2 GB)

The Drillers looked to be easing to victory after building a 10-3 lead against the Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers), but closer Andrew Johnston went Huston Street on Tulsa, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk in a non-save situation in the ninth. Adam Bright came in to get the last out for his first save. Matt Reynolds pitched a scoreless inning, and Edgmer Escalona served up a solo home run in his inning of work. Samuel Deduno (11-2, 2.72) got the start and win, though he wasn't particularly effective, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings, needing 89 pitches. He has allowed 3 runs in his past two outings after tossing 12 straight with less than three.

Ryan Harvey and Jeff Kindel were both a triple shy of the cycle, scoring five runs and driving in six between them. Cole Garner laced a couple doubles as well.

The two teams face off again tonight at 6:05MDT.

High-A Modesto, W 6-1 - (24-23, 8.5 GB)

Ethan Hollingsworth (1-2, 4.95) turned in a dominating effort for the Nuts in against the Inland Empire 66ers (Dodgers), getting his first win since being promoted from Asheville. The 22-year-old struck out 7 against no walks in 7 scoreless innings, allowing just one run on three hits, one a solo homer.

Modesto exploded for a 4-run first inning with the help of an error and three walks and just two hits. One was a leadoff double by Charlie Blackmon and the other was a 2-out 2-run single from Scott Beerer, who had three hits on the day to break a double-digit hitless AB slide.

The Nuts get an offday today before facing the Visalia Rawhide (Diamondbacks) Friday at 8:05 MDT.

Low-A Asheville, Off Day - (28-15, 1st)

The Tourists had an off day, allowing them to travel from Lexington backhome to Asheville to start a weekend series against the Kannapolis Intimidators (White Sox).

SS A Tri-City, L 0-1 - (32-22, 1st)

Low level minor league games can get squirrely. Four straight Dust Devil games have been shutouts - unfortunately, Tri City has been the victims in three of them. A day after shutting out the last-place Yakima Bears, the Diamondbacks affiliate returned the favor last night. Wes Musick, Sheng-An Kuo, Aaron Weatherford and Eric Federico combined for 12 scoreless innings before the Bears rallied for the walk-off win against Kyle Walker, only the second run he's allowed in his last 23.1 IP. The DDevils could only manage seven singles on offense.

Tri-City closes their series against the Bears tonight at 8:05MDT. Josh Hungerman (0-0, 2.86) gets the start for the Dust Devils.

Rookie Casper, W 8-7 - (2-1, 1st)

Th Ghosts snapped a five game losing streak in a hard fought win over the Great Falls Voyagers (White Sox).

Nolan Arenado (2) hit a HR for the second straight Wednesday, Chandler Laurent (two hits) and Eliezer Mesa (three) each doubled and catcher Brandon Whitby saw his average drop to .390 with a 1-for-4 day, including a triple.

Alejandro Barraza was credited with the win by throwing two perfect innings, striking out four in relief of Juan Gonzalez. Steve Junker nearly blew the lead but held the Voyagers to two runs despite allowing four hits and an error in the eighth.

The Ghosts close the series tonight at 7:05MDT.

AAA Colorado Springs, L 1-6 - (49-37, 1st)

The Sky Sox earned their fourth straight loss, losing 6-1 at the Salt Lake Bees (Angels). Greg Smith (1-1, 3.77) earned the loss in his third start in AAA. He allowed four runs on just three hits and three walks in five innings. Smith walked the first two batters of the game, and both scored, one on a sac fly and one on a 2-run HR by Brandon Wood (17).

Perhaps of more interest were the two relievers who pitched in rehab. Neither pitched well. Ryan Speier gave up three singles and a walk in allowing a run in an inning of work. Manuel Corpas needed 21 pitches to get through one inning in his first AAA appearance, only firing 10 for strikes while walking one and allowing a hit. Sal Fasano bailed him out by throwing out a runner attempting to steal.

Eric Young Jr tripled ito lead off the game and scored on a GIDP by Matt Miller for the only Sox offense.

The two teams take the field again tonight at 7:05MDT in Salt Lake.

AA Tulsa, Off Day - (5-6, 3.0 GB)

The Drillers had their second straight Wednesday off. Tulsa will host the Corpus Christi Hooks (Astros) tonight at 6:05MDT tonight. Keith Weiser (5-7, 4.69) will be opposed by Andy van Hekken (3-2, 4.66).

High-A Modesto, L 7-10 - (4-9, 6.5 GB)

The Nuts continue to struggle in the second half, this time losing a slugfest to the Bakersfield Blaze (Rangers). Brandon Durden got roughed up in his third straight start since returning from Tulsa, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 9 hits, 3 BBs and got dinged for 2 HR. Still, the Nuts offense kept the score tied at 7-7 when Durden departed, and Randall Taylor allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over the final three innings for the loss. The Blaze scored five runs after the 5th inning, while the only Nut to reach in that time was a solo HR by Brian Rike (7).

Radames Nazario (4) also hit a HR. Jason van Kooten knocked two doubles and a single and Wilin Rosario laced a three run triple. Modesto faces the Blaze again tonight at 8:45 MDT.

Low-A Asheville, W 9-3 - (9-4, 1st)

The Tourists just keep rolling after a tough first half of the season. Despite being outhit 10-9, Asheville routed the Augusta Green Jackets (Giants) on their way to their fourth straight win and SAL best record of 9-4. Juan Nicasio (3-1, 1.91) scattered eight hits over six innings for the win, Carlos Martinez singled, doubled and drove in three, Ryan Peisel rapped two singles, scored twice and drove in one, and Kiel Roling walked three times, scoring each time on base. A five run seventh, capped by a 2RBI 2B by Martinez secured the win.

The two teams face off tonight at 5:05MDT, starting pitchers TBA.

SS A Tri-City, L 0-4 - (13-6, 1st)

The Dust Devils have run into a buzz saw. After starting the season 12-2, they have lost four of five and surrendered the NOR lead to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants). Tri City managed just two hits on the night against the Volcanoes' Wilber Bucardo (3-0, 0.79) and David Quinowski (0-0, 0.84). Both hits were singles by Kevin Clark. Walks by Tim Wheeler and Mike Zuanich summed up the baserunners for the DDevils. Daniel Perkins (1-1, 3.44) pitched decently but allowed two home runs, and Josh Hungerman allowed a run in three innings of work.

Tri-City will host the Everett AquaSox (Mariners) tonight at 8:15 MDT. Rex Brothers and Ben Paulsen should be joining Tri-City tomorrow.

Rookie Casper, L 5-8 - (2-10, 7 GB)

The Ghosts looked as if they might finally break through for that third win, but the bullpen blew a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Missoula Osprey (Diamondbacks). Billy Vopinek recorded two outs and gave up a single with his first three batters, then lost his mind and walked three straight. Clint McKinney came on and allowed three straight singles and tossed a wild pitch for good measure to complete the meltdown.

On the good side, Joseph Scott (1) and Nathan Hines (3) homered, and David DiNatale knocked a 2RBI triple. The Ghosts get another chance at the Osprey tonight at 7:05 MDT. 2nd round pick Nolan Arenado should join Casper tomorrow.

In this relatively short session of Purple Row Academy, we're hitting the history books.

Now that I've explained the components and calculation of the statistic Wins Above Replacement (WAR) for position players and for pitchers, I'm going to use historical WAR calculations to determine the best players by position in Rockies' history. The inspiration for this article came from Sky Kalkman at BtB and KL Snow at Brew Crew Ball.

Of course, due to the fact that the Rockies' history is only 17 years old, there isn't exactly a deep pool of players to choose from in this study. Therefore, I will be ranking all players who produced a career WAR of over 3 wins at a position for the Rockies or was a significant player for the team.

Here's my methodology:

1. I only used stats accumulated when they played for the Rockies.

2. The categories used were: career with Rockies, best three consecutive years with Rockies (establishes average production), and best single year with the Rockies (establishes peak production).

3. If the players spent less than three years with the Rockies, their career total was used in the other metrics as well. If the player was at different positions for different years, the player would be considered for the position in which he had the most starts (or greatest impact, at my discretion) for the Rockies.

4. The players were ranked in each category. Those ranks were added and averaged out--the lowest average rank was the most valuable Rockie.

5. The data used was only for seasons that were completed (e.g. not 2009).

To gather data, I used Sean Smith's fantastic historical WAR database. This resource is so great because it accounts for basically all significant aspects of a player's context-neutral on-field production: hitting, baserunning, fielding, etc. Another major reason was that the database extends back to 1954, unlike FanGraphs' 2002. Note also that these numbers do differ from FanGraphs' values slightly.

Catchers

As RMN pointed out in his Counting Rocks article about Chris Iannetta, the Rockies have historically had a revolving door of sorts at the catcher position. Looking at the numbers, their career WAR data isn't much prettier.

In fact, just producing a positive career WAR for the Rockies as a catcher was a major accomplishment. In fact, no Rockies catcher has five years of service with Colorado. Since I have to rank somebody, here are the five catchers in Rockies' history (through 2008) who have delivered over a 0.5 WAR for the team.

Here's the best of a motley crew:

1. Jeff Reed

Career WAR: 4.3 (1st)
Top Three Seasons: 4.6, 1996-1998 (1st)
Top Season: 1.8, 1998 (2nd)
Average Rank: 1.33

Reed spent the 1996-1999 campaigns with the Rockies--tied with Ben Petrick for the longest Rockies' catching tenure. His Rockies career coincided with the twilight of his 17 year MLB career, spent with 6 teams almost exclusively in a back-up role, but his Coors years were also his most successful ones.

Considering the fact that a league-average player by definition is one that is two wins above a replacement player, Jeff Reed never reached league-average status, even in his career-best 1.8 WAR 1997 season. When one considers that his 1997 season is the second best catcher season in Rockies' history, the scale of the Rockies' failure at the catching position becomes apparent.

2. Chris Iannetta

Career WAR: 3.2 (2nd)
Top Three Seasons: 3.2 (2nd)
Top Season: 2.7, 2008 (1st)
Average Rank: 1.67

That's right Rockies fans, Chris Iannetta's 2008 season in which he racked up 2.7 WAR was not only by far the best catching season ever by a Rockie, it was also the only time that the Rockies have had an above-average MLB catcher. Obviously going forward Iannetta will be the man atop this leader board, probably as soon as the end of this year. He is, after all, a Very Special Boy.

3. Charles Johnson

Career WAR: 1.8 (3rd)
Top Three Seasons: 1.8 (3rd)
Top Season: 1.5, 2003 (3rd)
Average Rank: 3

While CDI is undoubtedly the best homegrown catcher the Rockies have produced, an argument can be made that Charles Johnson, to this point, was the best catcher to put on a Rockies uniform. After all, CJ did produce three years that were better than CDI's 2008 prior to coming to Colorado, the best being a 4.3 WAR season in 1997.

CJ was notably traded to Colorado from Florida in a package that included Preston Wilson in exchange for Mike Hampton and Juan Pierre. His Rockies career was from 2003-2004. In all, CJ played for 6 teams in 12 years, most notably the Marlins. He appeared in two All-Star games and won four Gold Gloves, though none with the Rockies.

4. Brent Mayne

Career WAR: 1.6 (4th)
Top Three Seasons: 1.6 (4th)
Top Season: 0.8, 2000 and 2001 (5th)
Average Rank: 4.33

Seriously, the 4th ranked catcher in Rockies history is Brent Mayne. Perhaps most famous for the pitching win that he garnered in 2000, Mayne played for the Rockies from 2000 to mid-2001, after which he was traded to the Royals for Sal Fasano and Mac Suzuki. In all, Mayne played for seven teams in 14 years, posting a career-high (and league-average) 2.1 WAR for San Francisco in 1999.

5. Yorvit Torrealba

Career WAR: 0.9 (5th)
Top Three Seasons: 0.9 (5th)
Top Season: 0.9, 2007 (4th)
Average Rank: 4.67

Acquired by the Rockies before the 2006 season in a trade with Seattle for Marcos Carvajal, Torrealba has provided below league average production for the Rockies, his third MLB team. A decent (though still below average) 2007 keeps Torrealba afloat, though last year he was 4 runs below average.

That's it. Those five are the only catchers in Rockies history who have done much of anything for the team. Others of note are Ben Petrick (0.3), Joe Girardi (0.1), and Kirt (what is that) Manwaring (-2.4!).

Next week we'll delve into a far more pleasant position, albeit a short list for the Rockies--first base.

Colorado Springs, W 8-4: Sal Fasano clubbed a three-run homer and Matt Miller knocked one out of the park in this Sky Sox victory. Mike McCoy had a triple and two RBI. Josh Fogg allowed three runs (two on a homer) in 5 1/3 innings.

Tulsa, L 7-9: Mike Paulk hit a three-run homer in the first inning as part of his 2-for-3 night at the plate. Darin Holcomb knocked in two runs. Keith Weiser allowed two two-run homers as part of the seven runs he saw cross home plate in six innings of work. Ryan Mattheus took the loss after he allowed two runs in the top of the ninth.

Modesto, W 6-5 in 12 innings: In the bottom of the 12th, Hector Gomez singled and then advanced to third on a Brian Rike single. After Jason Van Kooten grounded out, Jay Cox reached base on a fielding error that allowed Gomez to score the winning run. Gomez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Charlie Blackmon collected four hits, a run scored, a triple, and an RBI.

Modesto pitchers piled up the strikeouts last night, starting with Connor Graham's seven. He did, however, allow those five runs in 5 2/3 innings. Hector Luna actually inherited three runners and allowed all three to be charged to Graham. The pitchers combined to strike out 17 Giants, including Ryan Speier's two. Speier allowed a hit and a walk but no runs.

Asheville, L 1-5: Jimmy Cesario hit his third homer of the season, and that was about it for the offense. Robinson Fabian allowed four runs in seven innings and struck out five.

Erik Wetzel went on the DL for a broken hand, leading to RHP Stephen Dodson taking that spot on the roster.

One of my favorite parts of each year's team media guide is the page listing the Brewers' last trade with all the other major league teams. Maybe it's because it's so esoteric, maybe it's because of all the "some-team-wanted-him?" thoughts it prompts, or maybe it's the idea that for years Brewers and Mariners management had a bitter blood feud getting in the way of amicable trading. I don't know. Either way, let's take a trip down memory lane, transaction-style:

Colorado Springs, W 5-3: Sal Fasano knocked in three of the five runs, including the go-ahead run on a sac fly in the top of the ninth. Kenny Perez walked four times and Eric Young, Jr. stole his 19th base. Jason Hirsh went 6 1/3 innings, allowed two runs, walked two, and struck out six.

Tulsa, W 4-3: Daniel Carte received a gold star for his performance last night. He hit a three-run homer in the second inning to put the Drillers up 3-0. Come the eighth inning, the game was tied at three, but don't fear! Daniel Carte came to bat. Carte had an RBI single to put the Drillers ahead 4-3.

Jhoulys Chacin allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings. He walked two, struck out five, and had a 10-2 GO-FO. Austin Chambliss (who picked up the win and struck out two) and Tommy Baumgardner (who recorded the save) held Arkansas hitless over the last three innings of the game. Chambliss, we should note, made his Texas League debut in this game, having been promoted to replace Adam Bright (who went on the DL).

The Tulsa World reports that Jeff Kindel missed the game to attend his grandmother's funeral, Cole Garner did not play due to flu-like symptoms, and Chris Nelson left the game in the fifth after a tag to his head.

Modesto, W 9-5: Cory Riordan allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out five. Joey Williamson picked up a three-inning save after allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out five.

Brian Rike fell a home run short of the cycle, drove in three runs, and stole a base (4); Radames Nazario collected three hits and an RBI; Jay Cox had a triple; and Jeff Cunningham had two hits and an RBI.

Asheville, L 1-2 in 10 innings: Charleston scored in the eighth, David Christensen tied the game in the ninth on a single, and in the 10th Charleston won the game. Scott Robinson, Jordan Pacheco, Kiel Roling, and Tyler Massey each had two hits. Jimmy Cesario hit his 10th double.

Ethan Hollingsworth threw 6 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, striking five along the way. He scattered seven hits.
