Perry had been out with an eye infection and just completed a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo. Gonzalez had allowed seven runs and six walks in 5 1/3 innings.
With the roster expanding, the Tigers decided to promote Max St. Pierre to the big leagues after 14 seasons in the minors. Robbie Weinhardt was also recalled.
Game one of the doubleheader was embarrassing for the Tigers, but they put together a solid effort in game two and won by a score of 7-1.
