With the departures of Hong-Chih Kuo (the left-hander hasn't signed anywhere else yet, but as of now he is no longer a member of the Dodgers) and Jonathan Broxton, the Dodgers have lost the players who have been with the organization the longest and were with the team the longest, respectively.

Hiroki Kuroda is now a member of the New York Yankees, going to the Bronx for a reported $10 million for one year per ESPN. He will be missed.

Given that the Dodgers have 12 position players locked in for 2012, it seemed like Ned Colletti's work for the winter was pretty much done. Which makes the report that the club is interested in outfielder Coco Crisp, from Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors, all the more perplexing.

The dean of the Dodgers is now a free agent. The team did not tender a contract to Hong-Chih Kuo on Monday, the deadline to do so. Kuo, who has been with the organization since signing out of high school in Taiwan in June 1999, has arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on October 28, the latest in a long line of arm troubles for Kuo.

Ned Colletti has been on a shopping spree this winter, singing three veterans - Mark Ellis, Chris Capuano, and Jerry Hairston Jr. - to deals of at least two years. But sometimes too much risk aversion can leave you saddled with the equivalent of a superstar price tag without anything close to superstar production.

The Dodgers made official their signing of Juan Rivera on Thursday, inking the outfielder and first baseman to a one-year deal plus an option for 2013 for a guaranteed $4.5 million. Rivera will be paid $4 million in 2012, with a $4 million option for 2013 or a buyout of $500,000.

At the very least Juan Rivera would make an interesting platoon partner at first base or one of the corner outfield spots. But it's unlikely that the Los Angeles Dodgers guaranteed Rivera $4 million to sit on the bench.
