Edward Salcedo Headlines Braves Selected For Arizona Fall League

The minor league season is winding down for all the the Braves' prospects, which means it's time to see where some of the guys will be headed for the winter months. The Arizona Fall League, which spans across the Phoenix area, allows each team to send six prospects to one of their teams to play for a little more than a month.

Jason Heyward made the trip to the AFL in 2009. Freddie Freeman was there in 2010. First round pick Sean Gilmartin played last fall.

Who will the Braves be sending to Arizona in a couple of weeks?

The two most notable names are third baseman Edward Salcedo and shortstop Nick Ahmed.

Salcedo, 21, is a talented third baseman, although he is yet to put everything together for a full season. He is seemingly always red-hot or in a bad slump, which will need to change if he hopes to reach the majors one day.

As for Ahmed, he is a 22-year-old college prospect who really emerged in 2012. He recorded 32 doubles and 34 steals with a solid .717 OPS in High-A Lynchburg this past season. He could move quickly through the system in the coming years.

The most promising pitching prospect heading to Arizona is righty Zeke Spruill. He lacks the 'stuff' to become an ace, but he appears to be an innings eater who could be a solid No. 3 or No. 4 starter down the road.

Gus Schlosser, a 17th-round pick last year, will also be headed to Arizona. The final player going to Arizona is Cory Rasmus, who has been with the club since the 2006 Draft.

Matt Kennelly, a catcher, was the final player selected. Christian Bethancourt was probably the original pick here, but a hand injury has kept him out of action the last few weeks and he is not expected back anytime soon.

The Atlanta Braves are trying something new this season that should be a great experience for both fans and the prospects within the organization. On Tuesday evening, the Atlanta Braves will square off with the organization's 'Future Stars Team', which will be managed by Bobby Cox. Not only does it allow the Major League Braves another chance to play together, but it also lets the young kids in the Minors get a taste of what it's like to play against top-tier talent.
