Kyle Kendrick Shuts Out Slumping St. Louis Cardinals, For Some Reason

I mean no disrespect to Kyle Kendrick when I suggest that he is not the member of the Philadelphia Phillies you want to shut you out. The medium-tossing right-hander has bounced around as the Phillies' swingman since a surprising and unrepeatable 10-4 turn as a rookie in 2007, showing off a startlingly low strikeout rate and a propensity toward giving up home runs. That's a bad combination, but it's one none of the St. Louis Cardinals' big bats were able to exploit Saturday; only Tyler Greene, the Cardinals' suddenly exciting second baseman, managed an extra-base hit, lining a late double over third base.

The Cardinals are clearly slumping at this point, but not in the sort of way this kind of performance would suggest; their OPS is actually higher in May than it was in April, and still shockingly high for a full-team performance. What this seems like, Saturday's ugly blip excepted, is just an ugly reminder that baseball is a very frustrating game when your bullpen is performing below replacement level, instead of at its true talent level.

8 p.m., FSN Midwest, FSN Wisconsin: Cardinals at Brewers. The Brewers try to keep their amazing home record (now 40-14) going; they shoot for their eighth win in a row tonight.

8:40 p.m., CSN Philadelphia, ROOT Sports Denver: Phillies at Rockies. The Phillies are starting to run away with the NL East, now seven games up on the Braves. Kyle Kendrick takes the mound at Coors Field tonight against Aaron Cook.

10 p.m., FSN Arizona, CSN Bay Area: Diamondbacks at Giants. A win tonight for Arizona, and they'd be in a first-place tie with San Francisco. Tim Lincecum will try to prevent that, against Daniel Hudson.

7 p.m., MLB Network, CSN Philadelphia, CSN Bay Area: Giants at Phillies. Yet another matchup of these first-place teams. Tonight, Tim Lincecum faces Kyle Kendrick. MLBN viewers in the Bay Area and Philadelphia will see Pirates/Braves.

7 p.m., ROOT Sports Pittsburgh, FSN South: Pirates at Braves. Perhaps these teams can actually get a game done tonight in regulation time, after two extra-inning Atlanta wins the last two evenings.

8 p.m., FSN Houston, FSN Midwest: Astros at Cardinals. The Astros actually beat the Cardinals last night. That's an unusual event; Houston is 17-34 on the road. Tonight, Wandy Rodriguez faces Jaime Garcia.

8 p.m., FSN North, FSN Southwest: Twins at Rangers. The Twins are creeping back to near the .500 mark. No team that has been 20 games under .500 in a season has ever come back to .500. The Twins, six games under, hope to be the first -- and go on to the postseason.

1 p.m., WGN, FSN Detroit: White Sox at Tigers. It is now only six games from first to fourth in the AL Central. Don't count anyone out of this race.

1:30 p.m., MASN, FSN South: Nationals at Braves. If the Nats win this game, they would trail Atlanta in the wild-card race by seven games. Just sayin'.

4 p.m., FSN Southwest, ROOT Sports Seattle: Rangers at Mariners. Texas is going for its 11th straight win; Matt Harrison pitches against Blake Beavan.

8 p.m., ESPN: Red Sox at Rays. The Rays send Jeff Niemann to face the Red Sox' Josh Beckett in tonight's Sunday Night Baseball matchup.

7 p.m., ESPN, YES Network, FSN Southwest: Rangers at Yankees. The Yankees must go on without Derek Jeter. How this will happen, ESPN will tell you incessantly. Derek Holland pitches against Ivan Nova.

7 p.m., Sun Sports, NESN: Red Sox at Rays. Tuesday night, the Rays ended Boston's nine-game winning streak and crept to within 3.5 games of first place in the AL East. Tonight, Jeremy Hellickson will go against Josh Beckett.

9:40 p.m., CSN Bay Area, FSN Arizona: Giants at Diamondbacks. San Francisco won Tuesday night's game to increase their lead in the NL West to 1.5 games. Tonight, the Giants' Madison Bumgarner will face Arizona's Joe Saunders.

10:30 a.m., MLB Network: Triple-A baseball, Louisville at Syracuse. These are the top affiliates of the Reds and Nationals, respectively.

7 p.m., MLB Network, NESN, WWOR: Red Sox at Yankees. The Red Sox took over sole possession of first place in the AL East by one game with last night's win. It's a pitching matchup worth watching: Josh Beckett vs. CC Sabathia. In the New York and Boston markets, MLB Network will show Cubs vs. Phillies.

7 p.m., WGN, CSN Philadelphia: Cubs at Phillies. This may be the Cubs' best shot at winning a game in this series, as they have Randy Wells against Kyle Kendrick.

10 p.m., FSN Ohio, CSN Bay Area: Reds at Giants. The Reds have struggled at times this year and trail the Cardinals by five games in the NL Central. The NL West-leading Giants send Madison Bumgarner to face Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto.

Mets Take Lead over Phillies in 14th Inning

Amid the breaking news that Osama Bin Laden has been killed, the Phillies and Mets have played 13 innings have baseball. 37 players have taken the field thus far. Cliff Lee and Chris Young started for the NL East rivals, each going 7 strong innings. They'll both be rewarded with a no-decision, because with the Mets up 1-0 in the 8th, Ryan Howard slapped a single the opposite way off LOOGY Tim Byrdak, who he was previously 1-12 before this hit that plated John Mayberry for the tying run.

Michael Stutes, Antonio Bastardo, Ryan Madson, Danys Baez, and Kyle Kendrick have combined for six scoreless innings of 3-hit baseball. The only Phillie to have more than one hit is starting catcher Brian Schneider, who exited earlier in favor of current catcher Dane Sardinha. Raul Ibanez is the only other starter not currently in the game. Ross Gload and the injured Carlos Ruiz are the only position players remaining for the Phils. Roy Halladay could come in and bat, and David Herndon figures to be the next pitcher if this game goes any longer. With an off-day tomorrow, the pen will get a bit of a breather after a long night like this.

The Mets threatened in the 14th off Kendrick. David Wright started off with a base hit and a Jason Bay blooper moved him to second. When Ike Davis sent Shane Victorino to the warning track on a fly out, Wright moved to third, bringing up former Phillie Ronny Paulino. And like all former Phils, Paulino (who already had 4 hits on the night) made them pay. Kendrick threw a first pitch fastball right in Ronny's wheelhouse that he laced into left field for a double. Paulino had just one at-bat this season before tonight. Three innings of one-run baseball isn't bad by any means, but pitches like those are why Kendrick shouldn't be a major league pitcher.

Down one, the Phillies have Pete Orr, pinch hitter Cole Hamels, and John Mayberry coming up. The Phanatic is reportedly exhausted. UPDATE: They lost.

Recapping the events of April 4:

The Braves intend to keep outfielder Nate McLouth in the two hole (link). McLouth has provided Fredi Gonzalez enough confidence to remain second in the lineup. I will continue to keep track of the at bats he steals from Jason Heyward.

The Braves will give third baseman Chipper Jones a day off Thursday, the final game of the series in Milwaukee, which is a day game (same link). Brian McCann was given a day off Monday but entered late and had two plate appearances.

Nationals pitcher Oliver Perez is working on mechanical changes at their Spring Training complex (link).

Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick lost his World Series ring in a home burglary (link).

Yankees pitcher Pedro Feliciano has revenge on his mind for the series against the Mets (link). Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen expressed concern that Feliciano wouldn't last this season after having been "abused" by the Mets in 2010 (words of Brian Cashman).

The Phillies and Mets begin a three-game series in New York on Tuesday. The Nationals and Marlins square off in Miami.

Domonic Brown, Ben Francisco & John Mayberry Will Compete For Phillies RF Spot

Philadelphia Phillies GM Scott Proefrock was a guest on Fox Sports radio today and said that spring training will see an open competition between Domonic Brown, Ben Francisco and John Mayberry Jr. for the Phillies right field spot, which was vacated by the departure of Jayson Werth.

The hope of most Phillies fans is that this open competition yields a starter, rather than the team settling on a Francisco/Brown platoon. Our own Michael Levin wrote on this subject this very week and argued strongly against the idea of a platoon. In fact, if Franciso platoons with anyone he argues that it should be Raul Ibanez.

Proefrock also claimed that the Phillies need for a right handed bat will come from within and not from a trade of Joe Blanton or Kyle Kendrick. He says the team doesn't have to move either pitcher... of course, there's a difference "don't have to" and "won't."
