In other news, as long as the front office believes they can sign Josh Johnson to a long term contract, he will remain with the Marlins.

Really, it's the entire left side of the infield for our beloved Orioles, which is hardly a new thing. Last year's shortstop crew set what seemed to be a daily new benchmark for incompetence, and while fielding has been improved this year with Cesar Izturis and Robby Andino, offense is still a total blackhole from position six.

Izturis is on the DL, and went there with an ugly line of .260/.293/.327, which isn't so amazingly far off from his high-end projections, but his high-end projections scrape somewhere around passable for a Gold Glove defender, and whether or not you think his glove is that good is a matter of opinion. He OPS'd just .628 last year for the Cardinals, so this (.620) isn't shocking, but he's lost 26 points of valuable OBP from his line and "made up for it" by raising his slugging a half a tick up the awful chart.

The younger Andino, nabbed in the Hayden Penn trade, is much the same animal. He's hitting .253/.292/.313, and he's not a gloveman on par with Izturis, nor can he match him on the basepaths. Izturis is 9-for-9 stealing bags, with Andino at 2-for-4.

I'm not trying to make any grand revelation here, merely pointing out that shortstop is still very much a "need" position for this club in the near future. A really big-hitting team can get away with a good season version of Izturis thanks to his glove and legs, which also still make him a big upgrade on last year's stooge crew. But if you can grab a slightly lesser fielder who can pull his weight in the lineup, it makes a big difference.

Actually, this is all an elaborate set-up so that I can whine about Melvin Mora and be an obnoxious, stereotypical blogger who shows no regard for being fair or nice. This has nothing to do with Melvin Mora: Father. Husband. Man., only to do with Melvin Mora: Baseball Player, and he is freaking terrible. Trembley's continued insistence on hitting Mora in the five hole is stupid. It is flat-out stupid. Why sugarcoat it? It's dumb and Mora has not earned that spot.

When you're a team like the Orioles, bunching your best hitters can make a really big difference, but nope, here comes slap hittin' Melvin all the time, sporting that groovy .672 OPS (.277/.333/.339 with two home runs). This is exactly what he did last year before he caught otherworldly fire late in the season. If he doesn't do that again -- and mark my words, he will not do that again -- he's going to be a hindrance to the team's play all season long. By August, if he isn't hitting any better, there comes a point where you have to start looking at what's best for the team, doesn't there? Even in a "lost," rebuilding season?

Being the impatient dummy that I am, I'd almost prefer they throw Brandon Snyder to the wolves, stick Aubrey Huff at third base, and let Melvin cheerlead and encourage good bunting and make Sad Melvin Faces on the bench. I mean, I'm sure there are all kinds of practical reasons to not do that, and I get it, but I don't care. It's damn hard to watch him play anymore.

After two disastrous outings in-a-row the Marlins dfa'd Hayden Penn and it was time.

After a rough outing on Wednesday night, Marlins reliever Hayden Penn was informed that he will be designated for assignment on Thursday.

---

With Penn out of options, the Marlins have 10 days to either trade him, or if he clears waivers, they will place him in their Minor League system.

The thing is, I'm not sure he is going to clear waivers. Normally a pitcher who gives up 20 BB in 22 IP and has a 7.77 ERA isn't much in demand, but Penn is only 24 so there may be another team who will want to take a chance on him.

The Marlins are expected to call up Tim Wood to take Penn's spot on the roster.

The Marlins are planning on calling up right-hander Tim Wood from Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday.

---

In 14 games with the Zephyrs, Wood posted a 1-0 record and an 0.54 ERA. In 16 2/3 innings, he has allowed just one earned run, and three total. He has struck out 17 and walked seven.

In New Orleans Wood was mainly a one inning only guy, but he could go two if asked which makes him an interesting choice to call up since will be taking over the spot of a demoted "long reliever". Now, Wood started some games in 2006 and made one start in 2008 but it is hard to believe will be asked to pitch long relief.

Of course, if he can go two innings, that will be an improvement over his predecessor but I wouldn't call it long relief.

Which leads me to believe that more changes to the pitching staff are coming soon. As it stands going into the game tonight, the Marlins don't have a long reliever available, assuming they keep refusing to use Meyer in that position. Maybe the Marlins are counting on Johnson, Volstad and Miller going deep into the games and they won't need one anytime soon.

Anyway, Welcome to the Majors, Tim!

Florida Marlins relief pitcher Hayden Penn (48) talks to catcher John Baker and pitching coach Mark Wiley after walking in two Milwaukee Brewers runs during the fifth inning of a baseball game Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in Miami. (AP Photo/J Pat Carter)

Didn't see the game but judging by the box score I was very lucky.

West, apparently, wasn't real sharp but the Marlins were still within range (1-3) when he left the game. And then enter Hayden Penn who threw an absolutely stunning .1 inning giving up 4 runs on 0 hits, 2 walks and striking out no one. While Penn was his own worst enemy, the defense sure didn't do him any favors.

To the Marlins credit they did try to battle back but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Try it again tomorrow.

It was a month ago that I wrote that the Marlins, then 11-4, were a fluke and due for a regression. They were in first place and the Phillies were a measly 6-8. The Phillies swept the Marlins and are now 24-18, in first place themselves, and the Marlins have barely won any games at all since then and sit in fourth place at 20-25. This article will not have quite the detail of that article, as I'm in the Baseball Prospectus Idol competition and need to start preparing for next week's submission (don't forget to vote!), but I'll link to that old article here. A number of the players have changed, but I think I have the current rosters right. I've also updated the season stats.

Monday will pit Jamie Moyer against Chris Volstad. Volstad has been solid this year, with an ERA of 3.64. He has had significant BABIP luck (.244) but also been unlucky with homeruns (18% HR/Flyball), so overall he probably should be in the low 4's. That will be the toughest game of the series given Moyer's recent struggles. On Tuesday, the Phillies send Joe Blanton to the mound against Andrew Miller. Miller has been wild this year walking over 5 per 9, without striking out many more than 6 per 9. He's been lucky on homeruns per flyball, and will regress...hopefully against us! On Wednesday, the Phils sent Brett Myers out against Hayden Penn. Hayden Penn has only started one game this year (a disastrous start against the Diamondbacks five days ago), but with Nolasco sent to AAA and Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list, Penn will get another shot.

MATCH-UPS:
Monday, 7:05-- Jamie Moyer (L) vs Chris Volstad (R)
Tuesday, 7:05-- Joe Blanton (R) vs Andrew Miller (L)
Wednesday, 7:05-- Brett Myers (R) vs Hayden Penn (R)

See below the jump for detailed player statistics and splits, as well as updated batter/pitcher matchups.

very very high on flyballs because he almost never pops out in the infield at all and many of his flyballs are very deep. also since so few of his flyballs stay in the park (only 2/3 or so), a higher percentage of his balls in play are line drives-- which he does well on like many power hitters-- his low contact rate means he sometimes make poor contact though. probably above average overall
s/c/z: swings a lot especially for someone who doesn't see many strikes. however, he is pretty good at distinguishing pulls from strikes despite the consensus on him. he makes terrible contact overall though
r/l: 1.064 vs .786 ops: say it with me "that means he's good against righties, not bad against lefties!" in fact, he's the best hitter against righties in baseball right now probably. his k/bb vs lhp is 3.7 vs 1.6 vs rhp. he has a lot of power against lefties however, but a lower babip. i don't have split data on pull% vs lhp/rhp but observationally i'm pretty sure that's the difference in his babip: .338 vs .309.
h/a: much higher babip on road. very similar hr numbers. 2.0 vs 3.2 k/bb.
p/o: pull hitter, especially on groundballs-- hits more homeruns the opposite way though
other: struggles mightily against power pitchers and groundball pitchers, dominate flyball pitchers (since he almost never pops out, and has 10.3% hr rate) and smashes finesse pitchers (11.8% hr rate);

The Marlins just announced some changes to the 25-roster which is not surprising since after extremely long double header where the bullpen pitched 13.1 innings (not counting Penn, of course) they are in need of bullpen help.

From Joe Frisaro

To accommodate the extra arms, infielder Alfredo Amezaga was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retro active to Sunday, with a left knee contusion. Actually, Amezaga has a bone bruise, and he will be examined further on Friday by team physician, Dr. Lee Kaplan.

The Marlins also optioned outfielder Alejandro De Aza to Triple-A New Orleans.

The new pitchers are right-handed pitcher Cristhian Martinez, who had his contract selected from Double-A Jacksonville.

The Marlins also recalled lefty reliever Dave Davidson from Triple-A New Orleans.

---

The moves leave the Marlins with 14 pitchers and 11 position players. Wes Helms, Ross Gload and Ronny Paulino were the only players on the bench.

On Friday, the Marlins are expected to add another position player -- perhaps Brett Carroll.

<strike>Martinez was up with the club for two games earlier in the season. He wasn't great but he wasn't horrible either. Maybe the second time is the charm. </strike>

Got the wrong C. Martinez. Okay, this makes more sense, Cristhian is a starter up from Double A and judging by his stats, he was performing very nicely there. Since Penn, the Hopper and Meyer are spent, Martinez gets the role of long reliever tonight. I presume.

Davidson, if you recall, was claimed off waviers in late April from the Pirates. He is a lefty and has been performing well for New Orleans.

What it all comes down to is.....We need the arms!

And who knows, maybe Calero will finally get a day off. Oh what am I saying, that is never going to happen. At least until his arm falls off.

Cristhian Martinez

Dave Davidson stats

I hope you are ready guys, because more likely than not, you're pitching tonight.

Ricky Nolasco to start on short rest

I'm sure have heard by now that Ricky Nolasco is scheduled to be the starter on Friday with just three days rest.

Ricky Nolasco threw off the bullpen mound just a moment ago and is a go for Friday when he'll be starting on short rest. Nolasco threw 76 pitches in his rain-shortened start on Monday. Look for the Marlins to dip into the minors to call up a starter for Saturday. Sean West, at Double A Jacksonville, is a top candidate for that outing. West, who pitched on Monday for Jacksonville, is lined up for a Saturday start.

While I'm not thrilled about Ricky going on short rest, he only threw, if my stats are right, 58 pitches on Monday, so it is probably not all that bad.

As for Saturday: Oh, Good God No!, don't bring up Sean West. He is not ready. West is a talent and will probably be an important cog in the Marlins rotation of the future, but once again, He is not ready. There is no need to start the clock on him and have him get shelled in his first outting. Nothing good can come of that. Just manage the bullpen and start the Hopper on Saturday.

Yes, I know, Penn has the first game today and the Marlins may need long relief, but can't Meyer do it?

Anibal Sanchez to the DL; Chris Coghlan called up

The Marlins placed Anibal Sanchez on the 15-day DL, right shoulder strain, and started the clock on Chris Coghlan.

With right-hander Anibal Sanchez headed for the disabled list, the Marlins are promoting infielder Chris Coghlan from Triple-A New Orleans, vice president of player personnel Dan Jennings told the New Orleans Times Picayune.

---

Coghlan has split time between second and third base, but Thursday he started in left field.

The Coghlan addition may indicate the Marlins are prepared to dip into the bullpen to fill Sanchez's rotation spot. Burke Badenhop could get that assignment when Sanchez's turn comes up again Tuesday in Milwaukee.

I have been sitting around trying to wrap my mind around this move and I still don't know what to think. I have no problem with the Hopper getting the start on May 12 in Milwaukee, if that indeed happens. Hayden Penn probably couldn't give the team a 80-100 pitch start at this point in the season. Dan Meyer might be able to, but his value as a left-hander in bullpen almost requires him to remain there. So that leaves the Hopper, which is fine. Miller Park is a good place to start a sinker ball pitcher.

So basically the Marlins have decided to go with 11 pitchers and 14 position players until....who knows.

One of the parts of the move that is kinda weird to me is that in the past, in Coors and Miller, we have ran out of pitchers before we ran out of hitters. Not to mention after the road trip the Marlins play 13 games without a break. In that time, the bullpen may see extensive action. Maybe not, hopefully. But I wouldn't count on it.

Which brings us to Coghlan, who in my projections will be in the starting lineup in 2010. What exactly is he going to do? As in, where is he going to play? There is no way the team sits Danny. He could spell Bonifacio at third, I guess. Hopefully he will never see the outfield in Coors, that thing is huge.

Also, if he is used strictly off the bench, young guys typically don't make the best pinch hitters.

This move to bring up Coghlan now, confuses me.

Have they seen enough of Bonficaio? Doubtful. Trade Danny this early? Not likely. I truly doubt he is here to help out in the outfield with Carroll already on the squad.

Like I said, I'm confused by the move.

Anyway, Welcome to the Majors Chris!
