Late last night, the Florida Marlins, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, offered Triple-AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker to the Nationals for 1B Nick Johnson, and Mr. Rosenthal writes, in his article entitled, "MLB trade deadline buzz", that the Marlins:

"...would send Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker to Washington, with the Nationals paying part of the approximately $1.8 million remaining on Johnson's contract."

Back on July 2, 2009, ESPN.com's ESPN.com's Buster Olney expressed concern, in a blog post entitled, "Trade market goes bear", about the fact that the Washington Nationals were still,"...said to be asking high prices for the likes of Nick Johnson," and Mr. Olney imagined a time when the Nationals would be left holding onto the 30-year-old free agent to be:

"If interested teams turn elsewhere, the Nationals might face a day this summer when they won't be able to move Johnson at all."

The teams that were interested, or at least rumored to be interested at one point or another, included the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants, but in the last few weeks, the Red Sox acquired first baseman Adam LaRoche and Giants acquired the Indians' Ryan Garko, and it appeared as if the Nationals had in fact held on too long, and would be forced to work out a deal with Johnson, who's more than halfway through his first full season since 2006, and putting up the kind of numbers that could price him out of the Nationals' plans when he hits the market following the '09 campaign. .295/.408/.402 after this afternoon's loss to the Brewers, Johnson was believed to be, according to an article on MLB.com's Bill Ladson's blog entitled, "Nick Johnson's contract status", seeking, "...a two year deal," worth, "...more than the three-year, $16.5 million dollar extension he signed during the spring of 2006."

Just this morning, ESPN.com's Buster Olney weighed in again on the Nationals' situation with Johnson, writing, in a blog post entitled, "The biggest holes for trades to fill", about how it seemed, as of this morning:

"The Nationals might be standing pat at the deadline. Fair or not, the perception within the industry is that the Nationals waited too long and missed their window to deal Nick Johnson and get some value in return."

But late this afternoon, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, who, you might remember, broke the story of Former Manager Manny Acta's impending departure weeks before it happened, is reporting, in an article entitled, "MLB trade deadline buzz: Thursday edition", that the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies have both expressed interest in the services of the Nationals' first baseman. According to Mr. Rosenthal's "major league source":

"The Marlins are making a strong push for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, but the teams have been unable to reach an agreement on the player the Nationals would receive in return, according to a major league source.

"The Marlins have offered the Nationals a minor league pitching prospect for Johnson. Among the names under discussion: Class AA left-hander Aaron Thompson Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker."

Earlier this afternoon, Mr. Rosenthal wrote that the Colorado Rockies were also considering as a possible, "...late inning left-handed hitter off the bench," but that probably says a lot about what they would be offering in return, so the Marlins' interest would seem to be more serious at this point...

The Marlins are making a "strong push" for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, this according to Ken Rosenthal and John Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com

The duo notes that the teams have had extensive conversations, but have been unable to agree on the players the Nationals would get in return.

Among the names being discussed are Class AA left-hander Aaron Thompson and Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker.

Johnson, 30, is due roughly $1.8 million for the remainder of the season, and essentially would be a three-month rental for the Marlins.

All reports have indicated that the Marlins were desperately seeking adding another reliever, so this recent report comes as a bit of a surprise.

Johnson is batting .295 this season with six homers and 44 RBI's, which isn't far off from the Marlins current first baseman Jorge Cantu, who's batting .285 with 10 homers and 57 RBI's.

Buyers or sellers?

The Marlins are 6.5 games behind the division leading Phillies with a 51-48 record. That is a bit of a gap to make up but they are also only 3.5 games behind the Rockies in the Wildcard race. Marlins' executives have said that they will be buyers, but given their standing in the playoff races that decision could really come down to how the play in the next week. Their performance in that time frame could determine whether they are selling off veterans or adding pieces in an attempt to make the playoffs. The most likely scenario though is probably that the Marlins stand pat and wait to see how the season plays out.

Short-term need

Other than Hanley Ramirez there isn't another standout position player on the Marlins right now. That said, the most logical spots for an upgrade right now are at either corner outfield spot or at third base. Jeremy Hermida's atrocious defense takes away all of his value offensively and Chris Coghlan hasn't hit enough to help the team. The Marlins have tried other options in the outfield such as Cameron Maybin and Alejandro De Aza but they aren't helping either. At third the platoon of Wes Helms and Emilio Bonafacio isn't working as neither of them have done anything offensively. A big bat at any of these three positions would go a long way in helping the offense.

On the mound Josh Johnson and a recovered Ricky Nolasco form a fiersome duo at the top of the rotation. The problem is that beyond them there is a huge dropoff. Chris Volstad has been solid but Andrew Miller had to be demoted to Triple-A and there hasn't been a set fifth starter. An established starting pitcher would give the rotation a boost but the Marlins aren't likely to go after a rental player such as Jarrod Washburn. Unless they shoot for an ace they might not be able to find a replacement that is a definite upgrade.

The Marlins also haven't gotten much out of their bullpen. Closer Matt Lindstrom is currently on the DL but was too wild to be effective even when he was healthy. Kiko Calero has been the team's best reliever and Burke Badenhop and Leo Nunex have also done solid work. This might be the easiest area for the Marlins to trade for an upgrade wthout paying too much in either prospects or salary.

Long-term need

For the long term the Marlins shouldn't have too many positional needs if most of the prospects develop as planned. The infield should have John Baker, Hanley Ramirez, Matt Dominguez, and either Logan Morrison or Gaby Sanchez at first base. That means the only open spot is at second base where Dan Uggla will likely move on in the next few years. The outfield should be filled by some combination of Cameron Maybin, Chris Coghlan, Cody Ross, Jeremy Hermida, and Michael Stanton.

So that means that the Marlins need to focus on improving their pitching. They have some young arms for the rotation but given the team's extremely low payroll there's no telling how long they will be able to keep guys like Johnson and Nolasco. That means the farm system needs to keep churning out pitchers, something it lacks right now. The bullpen also needs work as there aren't any shutdown relievers in the organization. Signing late inning relievers is expensive on the open market so the Marlins will have to use some pitchers from inside the organization to fill out the 'pen.

Big leaguers on the market?

Unless the Marlins front office decides to be sellers there shouldn't be many major leaguers on the market. If they are, Dan Uggla and Jeremy Hermida could both find their way out of town to save the team money for next season. But if the Marlins are buyers then those two are probably staying. The most likely candidates on the major league roster would be guys who are bouncing back and forth from the minor leagues like Gaby Sanchez and Andrew Miller. Either of them could be traded for upgrades at key positions if the Marlins decide this is their year to make a run at the playoffs.

Minor league strength

The Marlins have a strong farm system with a number of possible impact players within arm's reach of the big leagues. However, most of these players are positon players, not pitchers. Their top pitching prospects, Ryan Tucker and Sean West, haven't lived up to expectations so far this year (Tucker because of injuries and West because of general ineffectiveness).

The impact hitters include Cameron Maybin, Logan Morrison, Michael Stanton, and Matt Dominguez. Maybin was one of the key players in the Miguel Cabrera trade with the Tigers. He's a very toolsy center fielder who is still developing his hitting skills at Triple-A but should be a full-time starter by next year. Morrison is a slugging first baseman with outstanding plate discipline. He missed two months of the season but has walked 39 times so far this year and has only 25 strikeouts. Stanton is an outfielder with light tower power but a huge strikeout problem. He hit 39 homeruns last year in Single-A at age 18 and has 21 homeruns between High-A and Double-A this year in only 320 at bats. The problem is he's also struck out 95 times, so he's going to have a tough time hitting for a high avetage in the majors. Finally, Matt Dominguez is a stellar defensive third baseman who's also holding his own offensively in High-A at only 19 years of age. The Marlin's offensive future looks very bright.

Take on short-term money to win?

While it looks like the Marlins might try to add a player or two at the deadline, they don't want to add much salary. If they trade for a player with a large contract they would probably need the other team to pay for most of it.

MLB Trade Rumors: Matt Capps To The Marlins?

Yesterday afternoon, rumors spread that the Pirates are not done cleaning house and that they may make closer Matt Capps available in a trade for a power arm. The first team that came to mind was the Marlins who are back in the NL East race even though closer Matt Lindstrom is on the DL.

The Marlins have a couple of pitching prospects in Ryan Tucker and Jose Ceda who they could trade to get Matt Capps. Here is what John Sickels from www.minorleagueball.com had to say about Tucker and Ceda:

Ryan Tucker, RHP, Grade B: He needs another pitch if he wants to start, but the ceiling stands out as excellent.
Jose Ceda, RHP, Grade B: Yet another high ceiling arm with command issues. Also has to watch weight.

The Marlins would use Capps to close with Leo Nunez and Dan Meyer handling the setup duties. In return, the Pirates would get one of Tucker, who should start at the major league level or Ceda, who could replace Capps as the Pirates closer in 2010.

In 2008, Tucker pitched for AA Carolina, appearing in 25 games, including 12 starts, throwing 91 innings with a 74/37 K/BB ratio, and a 1.58 ERA. This year, he has appeared in only 2 games, both in April, making me thing he is injured.

The fact that the Pirates received Joel Hanrahan from the Nationals leads me to beleive they will deal Capps, and allow Hanrahan to close in 2009.

Ryan Tucker on the Minor League DL

Ryan Tucker is having some problems with his knee and has been placed on the DL.

Hard-throwing right-hander Ryan Tucker was placed on the seven-day disabled list on Wednesday, after he gave up seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings on Tuesday night for Triple-A New Orleans. Tucker is dealing with a problem with his knee, which isn't considered serious.

Hopefully it is nothing since it is conceivable Tucker would be one of the short relief go to options later in the season. Assuming that will be necessary.

The Marlins optioned Ryan Tucker to The Big Easy.

Tucker has appeared in three Grapefruit League games with one start. He has thrown 4 1/3 innings, and he's walked eight while striking out three.

A first-round pick in 2005, Tucker is a promising prospect, who projects to be a starter. However, the team has considered using him in relief, and someday he could be a closer candidate.

At Triple-A, Tucker will be in the rotation.

Ryan's future with the Marlins is probably in the bullpen. But being in the starting rotation in New Orleans is a good thing. That way he will get more innings of work and somewhere along the way he might be able to learn and command a third pitch.

Ryan has talent, it just needs to be developed.

Scott Proctor shutdown again

Scott Proctor had a setback and the Marlins have shut him down, again.

Reliever Scott Proctor, who had a setback early this month when scar tissue in his surgically repaired right elbow broke up, will not throw for at least a couple days and that means he will likely not be ready for the start of the season.

I didn't know what to expect from Procter when he was signed. If he was healthy, there was the possibility he could be an asset in the bullpen. But considering his recent injury troubles, and given the fact his arm was abused in the past, I really don't what to expect for the future.

If I had to guess, he won't make through the entire season. And eventually one of the young guys will take his place and Nunez will be the main setup man. Who will take his place, if that happens, I don't know, but off the top of my head it would probably be Tucker or Badenhop.
