Indians' Jason Kipnis Hits The DL

Unable to shake a hamstring injury, Jason Kipnis was placed on the 15-day DL Friday, retroactive to August 14. Kipnis has been one of the Cleveland Indians' best hitters since his call-up, batting .279 with 6 HR and a .950 OPS. The rookie will be replaced on the roster by Luis Valbuena, who has struggled with the big league club, but has seen a real surge in AAA this season, carrying a .299 BA, 16 HR and 71 RBI with Columbus.

The Tribe made another move as well, sending Ezequiel Carrera down, making way for Shelly Duncan. Carrera doesn't seem quite ready for the majors, and despite flashes of potential, was unable to sustain any consistency. He will play every day in Columbus and will definitely get the chance to show he belongs down the road. He's just 24, and much like Ben Revere in Minnesota, it is hard to ignore his speed (35 SB in 39 attempts with the Clippers).

We've seen plenty of Valbuena before, and if he is able to bring anything to the table more than the Four A player we've been used to, that would be great, but the loss of Kipnis really hurts. The Indians' offense has been shaky, at best, at times this season, and they will need the rest of the lineup to step it up if they hope to keep rolling in their quest for the Central Division title.

Kipnis is eligible to return August 29.

Indians 'Hits': Talbot To The DL, Carrera Called Up; More Moves Imminent

Mitch Talbot, who has struggled mightily over the majority of his eleven starts, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to July 9) with a lower back sprain, and Ezequiel Carrera has been called up to fill his roster spot in what will be the first of more than one roster move.

Talbot is 2-6 with an ERA of 6.33, and was rocked in his most recent start against the Blue Jays.

Carrera, you might remember, was a hero in his first major league game with a game-winning bunt in his first career at-bat to defeat Cincinnati on May 20. Carrera went 2-for-8 in his limited action with the Tribe.

In other imminent moves: Fausto Carmona is about set to come back. Throwing a simulated game in Baltimore tonight is Carmona's last hurdle. Fausto might go against the Twins in one game of a Monday doubleheader, and either Zach McAllister or Jeanmar Gomez will likely get the call in the other game.

The Cleveland Indians kicked off their exhibition season with a 7-6 loss Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds. One thing that people often look for in the box score is who showed power by being able to hit the ball right out of the park. One player showed that against the Reds -- Ezequiel Carrera.

Who?

Carrera was one of the players acquired last season when the team traded Russell Branyan to the Seattle Mariners. The youngster has a chance to make the roster as a backup outfielder during spring training, and he's off to a good start. Not known for his power, Carrera also had two hits in an intrasquad game Friday, including one hit in which he showed off his speed with a bunt single and a stolen base.
