Farmers Only: Maloney and Wood shine

First things first. Jay Bruce and Ryan Hanigan have both reported to Louisville on rehab. Also, most of the Carolina pitching staff from a few months ago are now with the AAA team. A couple of recent callups are starters Tom Cochran and Camilo Vazquez, and stud reliever Joseph "The Cycle" Krebs.

Louisville beat Indy 4-2 behind another good start by Travis Wood. Woody gave up 1 run in 5 innings of work, and struck out 6 Indians. Logan Ondrusek earned his 11th save for the Bats with a perfect 9th, dropping his ERA to 1.93 in AAA. Juan Francisco had two hits for the offense, and Daniel Dorn drove in 2 runs with a pinch-hit double. Up next: Ben Jukich takes on Indy at 7:15.
Carolina went back and forth in their game against Mississippi before they won 6-5. Matt Maloney had a great start, pitching 7 innings and giving up 1 run on a solo HR, and left with a 3-1 lead. After Zach Ward predictably blew it, the Mudcats battled back with 2 in the 8th only to give up 2 in the top of the 9th. Jose Castro broke the tie again in the 9th with a game winning single. Jason Bour and Sean Henry each had 3 hits for the Mudcats, and for some reason shortstop Kris Negron started the game in CF. Not sure where that came from, but we'll see if it becomes a trend. Up next: Luis Montano takes on Mississippi at 7:15.
Sarasota lost to Palm Beach 3-2, as the normally automatic Mace Thurman gave up the winning run. Dave Sappelt was 3-for-4, and Alex Buchholz had a multi-hit game too. Travis Webb started, and gave up 4 runs (1 earned) in 5 innings. Up next: Lance Janke takes the hill against Palm Beach at 7:05.
Dayton beat South Bend 5-3 behind a solid start by J.C. Sulbaran. Sulbaran gave up 3 runs in 6 innings of work for his 5th win of the year. Carlos Mendez drove in 3 runs with his 3 hits, and Kevin Coddington added a solo shot. Up next: Chase Ware takes on South Bend at 7.
Billings lost to Great Falls 4-3 in 10. Efrain Contreras and Thomas Nurre both homered. Leonardo Astorga gave up 1 run in 5 innings. Frank Pfister was 3-for-5. Up next: Billings takes on Helena at 9:05.

Farmers Only: Rolen on rehab, and Dayton mounts a comeback

Louisville lost 8-3 to Indy. The big story in this one is Scott Rolen going 2-for-3 in his rehab start. Of course, this moved Juan Francisco to LF, where he went 2-for-3 with a triple, but his HR streak ended at 3 games. On the pitching side, Matt Klinker had a decent start, giving up 4 runs in 6 innings, but Pedro Viola's 4 runs in the 7th put this one out of reach. Up next: Sam LeCure takes on Indy at 7:15.
Carolina beat Jacksonville 5-1 behind a strong start by Camilo Vazquez. Vazquez pitched 7 innings and gave up only one unearned run on 3 hits, while striking out 8 hitters. Sean Henry led the offense with 3 hits, including his 10th HR of the year. Todd Frazier was 2-for-4 with his 14th of the season as well. Up next: Alex Smit takes on Jacksonville at 7:05.
Sarasota lost 10-4 to St. Lucie in a game where Matt Fairel got roughed up a little bit. Fairel gave up 6 runs and didn't make it out of the 6th inning. Nathan Driessen got some mopup time in his Class-A debut and gave up 2 runs in 3 innings. On the offensive side, Justin Reed and Denis Phipps had two hits each. Up next: Jeremy Horst takes on St. Lucie at 7.
Dayton put up 4 runs in the 9th to cap an exciting 5-4 comeback win against West Michigan. Humberto Sosa doubled in the tying and winning runs in a 9th inning that saw the only out come from a sacrifice bunt. The pitching was where it was at in this one, with Ezequiel Infante going 6 strong innings and Donnie Joseph pitching a perfect 9th with 2 strikeouts to notch his 2nd win of the year in Dayton. Up next: Jordan Hotchkiss takes on West Michigan at 7.
Billings lost both games of their doubleheader 3-2 and 3-1. Luca Panerati pitched the first game, and gave up 2 earned runs in his 6 innings of work. Sean Conner and Frank Pfister had two hits each. The Mustangs got dominated in the second game, only managing two hits and one run drove in by Mariekson Gregorius. After Ricky Bowen got roughed up in the first, Tzu-Kai Chiu pitched 4 1-hit innings and Bryan Gardner pitched 2 1-hit innings in relief. Up next: Tim Crabbe takes on Casper at 7:35.

Is this the low point of the season for the minor league teams?

Louisville struck early as they beat Indianapolis 10-2. Juan Francisco hit his second homer in as many nights and had a double, and Darnell McDonald and Daniel Dorn each had three hits, with the former hitting a homer run as well. Matt Maloney pitched another fine outing, going 6 innings of 1-run ball and struck out 7 while walking nobody. Up next: The Soulsucker takes on Indy at 7:05.
Carolina lost against Jacksonville 6-3 as Zach Ward continued to pitch terribly. Ward gave up 2 runs in his 2/3 inning of work, and earned his 4th loss of the season and brought his ERA up to 24.55. Zachary Cozart and Sean Henry had two hits each. Up next: Jerry Gil gets his first start of the year against Jacksonville at 7:05.
Sarasota lost to Jupiter 8-2 as Lance Janke got roughed up a little bit. Janke gave up 6 runs (5 earned) in only 3 1/3 innings. Alex Buchholz and Denis Phipps had two hits and a RBI each. Up next: Curtis Partch takes on Jupiter at 7.
Dayton finished up their game from last night, which ended up being a 7-4 loss, and lost again 6-0 in the nightcap. In the first game, Mark Serrano started last night, pitching 3 innings of 1-run ball. Byron Wiley was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. In the second game of the night, the Dragons were no-hit by Fort Wayne's Simon Castro in the 7-inning game. They struck out 9 times, with 3 by Byron Wiley. J.C. Sulbaran gave up 5 runs in 5 innings. Up next: The Dragons are off today, thankfully.
Billings lost to Idaho Falls 6-4. Mark Fleury had two hits, including a homer, and Mariekson Gregorius hit his first bomb of the year as well. Adian Kummet pitched 2 1-hit innings in relief. Up next: The Mustangs take on Idaho Falls at 9:05 behind Oscar Castro.
Despite mounting a small comeback in the 9th, it fell short as the GCL Reds lost to the GCL Red Sox 3-2. Misael DeJesus pitched 2 shutout innings, but Luis Machuca gave up 3 runs in his second outing of the year. Michael Henry pitched two innings of shutout ball and Mitchell Clarke pitched a perfect 9th. Henry Rodriguez was 3-for-4 and Juan Silva had two hits as well. Farmers Only: Micah's rehab goes reasonably well, and a long night in Dayton

Louisville beat Lehigh Valley 4-3. Micah Owings pitched 4 2/3 innings in his rehab start, and gave up 1 run on 5 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 2. Enerio Del Rosario and Logan Ondrusek were once again perfect, with Ondrusek getting his 4th save of the year. Kevin Barker led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a 3-run HR, and Chris Heisey, Chris Denove, and Chris Valaika also had two hits. Up next: Travis Wood takes on Lehigh Valley at 7:05.
Carolina lost big to West Tenn 7-1 behind a rough outing by Jeremy Horst. Sean Henry drove in the Mudcats only run. Up next: Mudcats are off today.

Dayton won a pitcher's duel 6-2 in 13 innings. The pitching was the big story, as Ezequiel Infante gave up 2 runs in 5 innings of work, and Justin Walker pitched 5 no-hit innings of relief. Donnie Joseph also didn't give up a hit in his 2 innings, and struck out 5 in the process. Mike Konstanty was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and Chase Weems had 2 hits as well. Louisville beat Rochester 5-2 behind a solid start by Matt Maloney. Matty went 6 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs and striking out 9. Logan Ondrusek pitched a perfect 1 1/3 for his 3rd save. Most of the runs were scored by Kevin Barker's grand slam, his 21st HR of the year. Up next: The Soulsucker takes on Rochester at 7:05.
Carolina lost to West Tenn 7-4 behind a bad start by Luis Montano. He gave up all 7 runs in his 5 2/3 innings of work. Juan Francisco and Sean Henry both had big nights, each with 3 hits, and Shaun Cumberland homered and drove in 2. Up next: Zach Ward takes on West Tenn at 8:05.

The GCL Reds killed the GCL Rays 12-0. The pitching was great, with Harold Johnson pitching 2 scoreless innings in his start, Tyler Cline going 6 innings while striking out 8, and Matteo Pizziconi finishing it off. Jefry Sierra was the star on offense, going 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, and 5 other G-Reds had two hits on the night. Up next: The G-Reds take on the GCL O's at noon.

Farmers Only: Another stud pitching prospect gets promoted, and Dayton's bullpen melts down big time

Sam Lecure only gave up 1 run in his 6 innings of work as Louisville rolled 7-3 against Toledo. Kevin Barker led the way going 3-for-4 with a solo HR, and Drew Stubbs, Darnell McDonald, and Daniel Dorn all had two hits. Logan Ondrusek pitched 1 2/3 innings of one hit ball to get his first save in AAA. As mentioned in the postgame show, LeCure's start tonight pretty much rules him out for Friday's TBA start in Cincinnati, pretty much ensuring that it goes to Justin Lehr. I can't see it going to anyone else at this point, unless they take Masset out of the bullpen. Up next: Travis Wood takes on Toledo at 7:05.

Remember when I said on the postgame show that Peoria was mounting a rally in the 9th against Dayton? They ended up scoring 10 runs in the 9th off of Dragons relievers to beat Dayton 13-7. Credit Mike James, Aguido Gonzalez, and Donnie Joseph for the epic meltdown. J.C. Sulbaran started, pitching 5 innings of 3 run ball. The only good pitcher on the night was Chase Ware, who pitched 2 scorless innings in his A-ball debut. Carlos Mendez and Alexis Oliveras had two hits each for the offense. Roster Moves: Federico Baez is back in Louisville, but the big news of the night is that former Featured Farmhand Matt Fairel got promoted to Sarasota. He was 8-5 with a 2.93 ERA in 19 starts in Dayton. Catcher Petr Cech is in Billings after spending most of the season in ~~West London~~ the GCL.

Louisville won 5-2 over Buffalo behind a solid pitching performance by Matt Maloney. Maloney went 7 innings and gave up 2 runs and 2 hits while striking out 6. Zach Stewart pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get the save. That's 9 2/3 innings in Louisville so far without giving up an earned run, and he hasn't given one up since June 24th, when he was a Mudcat. In his 89 total innings (split between 3 levels), his ERA is a stellar 1.62. Wes Bankston was 4-for-4 to lead the offense, and Darnell McDonald hit his 7th HR of the season. As for the other big time prospects, Chris Heisey had a double to go 1-for-4 and Drew Stubbs and Alex Gonzalez on rehab were held hitless. Up next: Louisville takes on Buffalo again at 7:05 wiith Ramon Ramirez taking the hill.
Carolina won on a late-inning rally in Huntsville, 4-3. Stephen Chapman and Todd Frazier both went deep for the Mudcats, and Sean Henry had two hits in the leadoff spot. Lee Tabor wasn't bad, giving up 2 runs in 5 innings, but Sean Watson, Logan Ondrusek, and Phil-Alex Valiquette combined to give up 1 hit in relief to seal the win. Up next: The Mudcats take on Huntsville at 8, with Matt Klinker set to go (probably).

Sarasota lost 4-1 to Clearwater. Dave Sappelt and Neftali Soto had two hits each, and Chris Kelly pitched 2 shutout innings in relief, but that was about all that happened. Up next: Sarasota takes on Dunedin at 7. Luis Montano is likely to get the start.
Dayton was off. J.C. Sulbaran takes on Wisconsin at 8:05.
Billings beat Ogden 7-6 led by a 3-run HR by Thomas Nurre. Shea Snowden had some trouble in his start, but the bullpen shut Ogden down. Up next: The Mustangs are off today.

Futures Game/Weekend Recap

As you may know, the Reds had two players selected to play in the Futures Game in St. Louis yesterday, Chris Heisey from Louisville for the US team and J.C. Sulbaran out of Dayton for the World team (he's from Curacao). Heisey started the game in LF and batted 6th (between Pedro Alvarez and Tyler Flowers, no less), and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. Bummer. On the other hand, Sulbaran pitched the 9th inning for the World team with a 2-run lead, and despite walking 2 hitters, didn't allow a hit to earn the save.
Louisville swept their series against Columbus over the weekend to power into the all-star break on a 5 game winning streak and first place in their division. They won Friday 5-4 behind 7 strong innings from Matt Maloney. Zach Stewart gave up 1 run in 2 innings of relief for his first AAA save. Chris Heisey was the offense, going 2-for-4 with a HR. On Saturday, Pedro Viola blew a 3-run lead in the 9th, but the Bats came back in the 10th to win in walk-off fashion 7-6. Chris Valaika had the most important hit, driving in the winning run, but Craig Tatum had a big night going 3-for-4 with a HR, as did Wes Bankston, who had 2 HRs, his 12th and 13th of the year. Justin Lehr gave up 4 runs in 8 1/3 innings, and Jared Burton gave up one hit in 1 2/3 innings to earn the win. Sunday saw the Bats light up the opposing starter to win the finale 8-4. The most impressive performer? Kip Wells, who gave up one hit and struck out 3 in 3 innings of relief. Darnell McDonald homered and Corky Miller had two hits. Drew Stubbs was 0-for-5 to not help his cause at all for being brought up. Up next: The Bats are on the all-star break!

Carolina lost the weekend series to Jacksonville by going 1-2. On Friday, they lost 2-1 in 10 innings, behind a solid outing from Camilo Vazquez. He pitched two perfect innings before being pulled during a rain delay. By all accounts, nothing to look too much into. Jerry Gil gave up 1 unearned run in 3 innings, and Ruben Medina and Philippe-Alexandre Valiquette both pitched 2 innings of shutout relief. The bullpen did a great job picking up the starter given the situation, but the offense couldn't capitalize. Sean Henry drove in the only run. On Saturday, they split a doubleheader, winning 2-0 and losing 1-0. Matt Klinker pitched brilliantly in the first game, giving up 1 hit in 6 innings and striking out 8. Todd Frazier was 3-for-4, and Juan Francisco and Stephen Chapman drove in the Mudcats 2 runs. Tom Cochran was almost as good in the second game, giving up 1 run and 1 hit in 5 innings while striking out 9, but the offense could only muster up 3 singles to support him. Up next: The Mudcats are on the all-star break too!

Sarasota lost their first game of the weekend 6-3 against Fort Myers, but rebounded in a big way against Charlotte, winning 6-1 on Saturday and 5-0 on Sunday. Jason Louwsma and Justin Reed had two hits in Friday's game, and Justin Freeman and Mark Pawelek picked up the bullpen after Travis Webb got lit up. Luis Montano gave up 1 run in 6 innings on Saturday, and it was a mixed offensive effort with Reed, Louwsma, Neftali Soto, Justin Tordi, and Jose Gualdron all with two hits each. Louwsma had another big game on Sunday with two hits, including a HR. Scott Carroll pitched great again, going 6 shutout innings, and The Cycle and Josh Beal closed it out. Up next: Jeremy Horst takes on Charlotte at 7.

Dayton continues to be the anti-Louisville, losing all three games over the weekend. They closed out their series with Clinton with a loss on Friday, 6-0. Nothing really happened in that one. They lost to Cedar Rapids in the 8th inning on Saturday, falling 6-5. Josh Fellhauer was 4-for-5 with 2 RBi, and Enrique Rojas added 3 hits as well. On Sunday, they lost 11-7, and Lance Janke got lit up. Byron Wiley was 4-for-4 with a HR and 4 RBI, and Andrew Means and Cody Puckett had two hits each. Up next: Dayton closes out their Iowa tour in Cedar Rapids at 1:05. Matt Fairel will take the hill.

Billings went 1-2 over the weekend. They won 6-4 over Orem by scoring 4 runs in the 9th. 5 Mustangs had 2 hits, including Tyler Stovall who drove in 2 runs as well. Josh Garton added a PH HR in the 9th, a solo shot and his first as a pro. Shea Snowden pitched 6 1/3 innings of 3-run ball, and Donnie Joseph earned his first win in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. On Saturday, they traveled to Ogden and lost 10-4. Luca Panerati gave up 7 runs in 5 innings, and while Forest Cannon's 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief helped, the offense couldn't overcome the deficit. Sunday's game saw another loss, 6-4 this time. Mark Serrano was once again good in relief, but the offense was once again unable to overcome a 5 run hole. Humberto Sosa was 4-for-5, and Efrain Contreras, Sean Conner, and Mariekson Gregorius all had two hits each. Up next: Justin Walker closes out the Mustangs tour of Utah in Ogden at 9.

The GCL Reds won both of their games over the weekend, 11-3 on Friday and 6-1 on Sunday. Donald Lutz was the star on Friday, going 4-for-5 with a 3-run homer and 4 runs batted in total. Henry Rodriguez also had three hits. Nathan Driessen pitched 3 2/3 one hit innings in relief, striking out 6, and Raul Rodriguez and Jacob Wiley pitched hitless outings as well. On Sunday, all three Rodriguezes had two hits (Yorman, Cristobal, and Henry), and Harold Johnson pitched 3 perfect innings in his start. Up next: They take on the GCL Orioles at noon. Farmers Only: Weekend Recap

Roster Moves: In the biggest news of the weekend, Chris Heisey and Zach Stewart have earned callups to Louisville. Both of them were tearing up AA, and Stewart will pitch out of the bullpen after starting for the rest of the season, presumably to keep his innings down. Newly acquired Corky Miller and recently demoted Adam Rosales are back with the Bats was well. Jordan Smith is off the DL in Carolina, and Brian Peterson is the backup catcher for the Mudcats now, after Miller was acquired in AAA and Chris Denove goes on the DL. Another great sign, as Juan Francisco is back for the Mudcats too. Josh Ravin goes on the DL in Dayton, as Aguido Gonzalez is activated off of it.
Draft Picks Signed: 9th rounder Brian Pearl and 12th rounder Josh Garton are with Billings now. 30th round catcher Yovan Gonzalez and 8th round outfielder Juan Silva are with the GCL Reds now. 4th rounder Mark Fleury, 11th rounder Harold Johnson, 35th rounder Oliver Santos, and 36th rounder Chris Burleson have all signed but aren't assigned to a roster yet.
Louisville dropped 2 of their 3 games over the weekend. On Friday night, the Bats lost 6-0 to Charlotte as Ramon Ramirez got lit up. Daryl Thompson pitched in relief in his first game off the DL as well, which is a promising sign. Danny Dorn and Michael Griffin both had two hits, but the Bats couldn't get any other offense going. On Saturday, Ben Jukich kept the guys in the game, but they dropped in the 9th to Gwinnett 4-3. Jukich pitched 5 1/3 innings, and gave up 3 runs while striking out 7. Chris Valaika led the way with 3 hits, and Edwin Encarnacion and Darnell McDonald were both 2-for-4. In Sunday's game, Matt Maloney led the Bats to a 6-4 win over Gwinnett. Maloney gave up 3 runs and struck out 6 in 6 2/3 innings to get the win. Batting 3rd and playing RF in his second start in Louisville, Chris Heisey went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Edwin Encarnacion and Kevin Barker both had multi-hit games as well, and Barker hit his 14th HR of the season. Up next: The Bats take on Gwinnett at 7. No starter listed, but Justin Lehr should get the nod.
Distraught over Heisey's recent promotion, Carolina got swept over the weekend. Friday night saw them lost 6-2 to Jacksonville. Dallas Buck got hurt, only pitching 2 innings. In his last game in AA, Chris Heisey and Carson Kainer had 2 hits each. On Saturday, the Mudcats got shut out 9-0, with Juan Francisco getting a hit in his first game back off the DL. Not much else there. On Sunday, Carolina took the lead in the top of the 8th only to lose it in the bottom of the inning, a 6-5 loss to Chattanooga. Travis Wood started the game and once again pitched well, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings, before Sean Watson gave up 4 runs in the 8th to blow the save. Sean Henry and Todd Frazier each added a 2-run HR to the Mudcats cause. Up next: The Mudcats take on 'Nooga at 7:15. No starter listed, and since it was supposed to be Zach Stewart's turn before he got promoted, I'm not sure who will get the start instead.

All-Star Matt Fairel went 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6. Oscar Castro, Junior Martinez, and Aguido Gonzalez combined to close it out. After starting their season with a win, Billings lost three more over the weekend to drop their losing streak to 5. On Friday, they lost a 11-10 slugfest. Adian Kummet started and gave up 2 runs in 2 innings, but every reliever after him also gave up runs. On the other hand, the offense was good with Sean Conner, Alexis Oliveras, and John Dao all with 3 hits each. The lost 5-3 on Saturday, behind a decent start by Justin Walker. Walker gave up 3 ER in 6 innings, and struck out 6. Frank Pfister was 2-for-4 and drove in both Mustang runs. In the final game of the series, they lost 6-4. Louisville shut out Charlotte 5-0 behind a stellar performance by Justin Lehr. Lehr earned his 10th win of the season, only giving up 3 hits (and no runs) in 8 innings, while striking out 4 and walking none. Edwin Encarnacion hit his 2nd HR of his rehab stint while going 2-for-5, and Michael Griffin, Kevin Barker, and Daniel Dorn also had two hits to contribute to the offensive attack. Up next: Sam LeCure takes on Charlotte at 7:15.
Zach Stewart had a good start that was wasted by the bullpen as Carolina lost to Jacksonville 10-5. Stewart gave up 2 runs in 5 innings, striking out 6, but after 21 2/3 scoreless innings in AA, Logan Ondrusek got shelled, giving up 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning for the loss. Todd Frazier and Sean Henry went deep for the Mudcats, and Zachary Cozart and Jose Castro had two hits each. Up next: Tom Cochran takes on Jacksonville at 7:15.
