Taylor Tankersley is mending nicely after elbow surgery, and should be ready to compete for a spot in the bullpen come February:

The 26-year-old had screws inserted into his left elbow on April 17 to repair a stress fracture in his throwing arm. The procedure was performed in Fort Worth, Texas, by Dr. John Conway.

By the end of July, Tankersley was cleared to begin throwing. Since then, he's built up to tossing off a mound at the Marlins complex in Jupiter, Fla.

"I'll be ready for Spring Training," said the former University of Alabama lefty, who last pitched in the big leagues in 2008. "I've listened to the doctors and the trainers. I took their approach to get back. My arm is solid now. I threw bullpens leading up to Thanksgiving.

"I threw a month's worth of bullpens with no setbacks. They went well. I was throwing all my pitches there at the end. My arm is fine and well. I'm excited. Come Feb. 20, I'll be ready to go."

With the Marlins looking to deal Renyel Pinto, they could use a healthy Taylor Tankersley in the bullpen next season. That is, provided they get the '06 version of the Tank, and not the 2008 version.

Renyel Pinto is allegedly wanted for all the wrong reasons.

This past May 30, he was tooling his pimped-out white Infiniti SUV through Hallandale Beach when cops pulled him over and discovered he didn't have a valid driver's license. He was ordered to appear in Broward County court June 16.

He didn't show for the court date. His driving privileges were suspended, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He'll face a $2,000 bond when he's nabbed.

According to a lawsuit filed September 4 in Miami-Dade civil court, the pitcher breached his contract withPro-Management Resources Inc. when he "failed to pay" a 1.5 percent cut of his $400,000 2009 salary.

He didn't respond to the suit. On October 23, Pro-Management was awarded a default judgment for the entire six grand.

Don't know whether any of this is correct or not, but if it is, get Jeff Conine to be a character witness, if he is willing, because they like him in Broward County. And oh, good luck finding a new agent. It always seems the Marlins possess a "colorful" player every year. This year is no exception.

Nick Johnson's Return To DC Spoiled By Upstart Nationals!!!!

For the first time since September 23, 2008, the Washington Nationals beat the Florida Marlins, but it took a six-run eighth to tie and overtake the Fish, who were 9-0 against DC in 2009 before blowing a 4-0 lead in the nation's capital tonight. Florida right-hander Josh Johnson held the Nationals to just two hits through seven shutout innings, but in the home-half of the eighth, Washington rallied with three-straight singles by Willie Harris, Alberto Gonzalez and Wil Nieves, and a two-run double by Ronnie Belliard that made it 4-2 Florida, knocking Johnson out when a moment ago he'd been cruising. Renyel Pinto replaced Johnson, and gave up an RBI groundout to Nyjer Morgan making it 4-3 and Marlins' right-hander Kiko Calero surrendered a single to Cristian Guzman that scored Ronnie B. and tied it at 4-4. A Josh Willingham pop-up later, Adam Dunn stepped to the plate against lefty Dan Meyer and launched a 93 mph fastball off the outside edge to deeeeep left and GONE!!! SHAKE N BAKE!! SHAKE N BAKE!! SHAKE N BAKE!!! Adam Dunn hits an opposite field 2-run HR to give the Nationals a 6-4 lead after eight.

Mike MacDougal came on in the ninth and struggled his way to his 9th save of the season, giving up a double and a one-out walk before getting a DP grounder out of Jeremy Hermida to DC shortstop Cristian Guzman, who stepped on second and fired to first to end it. Nationals' starter J.D. Martin was out in the fifth, having thrown 99 pitches and surrendered three runs, but the bullpen holds it close, with Jason Bergmann and Ron Villone limiting Florida to just 1 run on 4 hits in 3.2 IP and giving the Nationals the chance to eventually rally...

A few weeks back, when the Washington Nationals invited a group of bloggers to visit Nationals Park and meet with the team, we were given the opportunity to interview a few players, Adam Dunn amongst them, and when I finally dared to get a question in, I took the chance to ask the one question** one of the Federal Baseball.com regulars, (the estimable Doghouse) wanted answered:

Q: Federal Baseball: "I just had a question for Adam (Dunn), one of the readers on my site wanted to know if you'd changed your hitting approach, at all, we noticed you hitting a lot more singles and opposite field...?"

Adam Dunn:

"Yeah, I was uh, yeah, I've been working on that a lot, trying to hit, you know, a lot more singles this year and, um, you know, just trying to slap the ball to left, and things like that, you know try to use my speed game more...HECK NO, MAN!! (LAUGHTER)...Nah, you know, I don't know I think, it's a lot of little mechanical things, and you kind of work on and continue to work on, and just kinda allowing me to uh, you know, do that, I'm not trying to hit singles."

Dunn may not be trying to hit opposite field singles, but in the last two nights, he's hit two huge opposite field HR's and I'd swear I saw him aiming for the Crawford Boxes last time the Nationals visited the Astros, but maybe it's Dunn's little secret, maybe he wants other teams to keep playing the shift, Heck! Maybe he just wants pitcher to keep giving him fastballs on the outside edge that he can power over whatever fence you put in front of him. The Big Donkey, The Bigger Wilkerson, or Big Wilky, For Short, Big Walky, The Dunn-K!, call him what you will, and come watch him hit 40, cause even when he starts a game with 3 K's he can end it with a Dinger, and even 122 K's can be forgotten!! SHAKE N BAKE!!

• The Expos Curse: Broken?

The last Montreal Expo, Nick Johnson was traded last Friday, and was on the Marlins when the Washington Nationals beat them for the first time this season? Coincidence? Irony? (No, and ninety percent of what people call irony isn't either...sorry, pet peeve...that and celebrities saying things are 'surreal'...but I digest...") Some folks around here apparently believe that now that the last player in the franchise's history to don the powder blues (really pinstripes by Johnson's time) and the eMb is gone things will finally change in NATSTown™. Doghouse wrote about something called the "Curse of the Expos, Divined by the Boxing Priest", which he first read about on the now defunct Bad Nats blog:

Doghouse, our resident escaped physicist, went back to his favorite blog, Bad Nats, yesterday seeking the cause of the Nationals' ills, and he seems to think he may have come up with something, it's called the Curse of the Expos, and it was divined by the Boxing Priest...

I always thought, Rob Dibble was right and the Nationals only had to let Teddy win a race to turn things around, but is it going to take the trade of "Two-Spot" Johnson to bring a winning team to DC? Well, the Boxing Priest said so...

Has it been lifted? Now that Nick Johnson has been traded? Will good times take over in NATSTown™? ENATSTown© was abuzz tonight, with many wondering if the curse had been lifted. Will the trade that sent the Last Expo out of DC be the difference...Or maybe the curse of the Expos is just now where it always belonged, with Florida Marlins' owner Jeffrey Loria, who almost single-handedly ended baseball in Montreal and was rewarded with another franchise...Enjoy it, Jeff!!!. Nick "Two-Spot" Johnson rips a single by Adam Dunn for a Trademark Single™ and a 1-0 lead. J.D. Martin hits Hanley Ramirez. Nyjer Morgan charges in on a line drive but comes up short, but he makes a strong throw to third for the force on Nick Johnson, who had to wait and see if Morgan made the catch. Hanley Ramirez, Josh Johnson, and the Florida Marlins come to Los Angeles for a three-game series at Dodger Stadium starting Friday night. Both clubs had Thursday off, so they will likely be well rested. Both are coming off sweeps; the Marlins just took three straight in San Diego, and five of Florida's last eight series have resulted in a sweep.

Just like the Dodgers, a Ramirez is the Marlins' best player. Hanley is a true superstar -- he has started at shortstop for the National League in the last two All-Star games -- quietly having his best season. Ramirez is leading the league in batting average, hitting .348/.411/.563, with a 4.16 wOBA, and is fifth in MLB in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) with 4.5 (just slightly behind Matt Kemp, by the way).

Old friend Cody Ross still mans centerfield for Florida, and as Joe Frisaro of MLB.com recently noted, Ross was once part of a Dodger minor league outfield with potential:

"[Shane] Victorino, [Jayson] Werth and me, we all clicked," Ross said. "All three of us were in Las Vegas. Me and Victorino were in the outfield. Werth came down on rehab assignments.

"We'd hang out in Spring Training. Those guys became pretty good friends of mine, and we'd keep in touch, even in the offseason."

Heralded corner infield prospect Gaby Sanchez was recalled on Monday, but so far has been limited to pinch-hitting duty. Meanwhile, the Marlins continue to play one of the worst players in baseball, Emilio Bonifacio, at third base. Among those qualified for the batting title, only three players have a lower WAR than Bonifacio's -0.4 (yikes, Vernon Wells!). Bonifacio is below replacement level as a player, yet his in penciled into the first or second spot in the Marlins' batting order nearly every day. He is seventh in the NL with 410 PA.

The Marlins' pitching is headlined by Josh Johnson, the 25-year old ace of the staff. He is 8-2 with a 2.74 ERA, a 2.90 FIP and a 3.37 x-FIP. Over the last two years, Johnson's winning percentage (.833, 15-3) is the best in baseball among pitchers with 15 or more decisions.

Closer Matt Lindstrom struggled mightily (6.52 ERA, 1.897 WHIP) but is currently on the disabled list. The remainder of the Marlins' bullpen has performed well, led by flamethrowers. Leo Nunez, Dan Meyer, Kiko Calero, and Renyel Pinto have combined for 151 strikeouts in 149.1 innings.

Over the past few years, the Marlins' reputation has been that of a poor defensive club. They have improved this year somewhat, but have been sunk defensively by unlikely source. As Juan Rodriguez of the Florida Sun-Sentinel reported, the defensive problem has been on the mound:

"At most of the positions [the Marlins] don't look anything way above average or below average with the exception of pitchers," said Ben Jedlovec, a research analyst at BIS. "Their pitching staff, when you break it down by the individual components, they haven't been holding runners very well. A lot of guys have been taking off based on the pitcher. ... What really weighs down the pitching staff is that they haven't been fielding the position very well."

Marlins pitchers have committed 10 errors, tied for fourth most in the NL, even though they do not field as many balls as the average pitcher.

Asked by Washington Post writer Chico Harlan in a 7/31/08 Nationals Journal article entitled, "The Fully-Contextualized Jim Bowden Q&A", why the Nationals' didn't make a deal to trade away any of the veterans on their roster, then-DC GM JIm Bowden explained that there had indeed been conversations, but in the end:

"We just came to the decision, We don't want to give anybody away. That didn't make sense. We need to get a piece back that was helpful, that had a chance to help us in the big leagues someday. Those kind of deals made sense to us. But to give somebody away to a contending team and not get talent back? That didn't make sense."

ESPN.com's Buster Olney, in an article today entitled, "The trade market goes bear", wrote that the Nationals are still, "...said to be asking high prices for the likes of Nick Johnson," and if I might interpret Mr. Olney's opinion from what he says next, the price that Washington's asking might be too high, as he warns, (Is that the right word? You judge his tone):

"If interested teams turn elsewhere, the Nationals might face a day this summer when they won't be able to move Johnson at all."

Mention Nick Johnson's name and it's inevitable that someone will bring up his injury history, (as opposed to, say, his trademark singles, NJ™), so it's understandable that other teams are reluctant to part with top prospects for a player they're worried might go on the DL at any moment, but the Nationals, who obviously have a better idea of Johnson's true worth in the batting order, on the field, (where, until recently, he'd been considered sure-handed) and in the locker room, would most likely argue that Johnson's injuries...a "deeply bruised" heel, a fractured right femur, or last year's torn right wrist tendon, are far too random a collection of injuries to form a consistent pattern or an injury "history". It's not like Johnson has chronic back or groin issues, or some recurring issues, so why shouldn't they expect legitimate talent in return?

"Acting" DC GM Mike Rizzo told New York Newsday columnist Ken Davidoff, in a late May article entitled, "Nationals are building for future," that the Nationals were willing to make a deal:

"'Nick Johnson, or (Josh) Willingham, or (Austin) Kearns, anyone on our roster, if we can make a good baseball trade and improve ourselves, not only for our present but also for our future -- a player that can impact us -- we have to make those kinds of trades...'"

Both Josh Willingham and Nick Johnson are included on a list of the "Top position players available" NY Newsday's Ken Davidoff put together for an article yesterday entitled, "Trade deadline looms, excitement begins" where Mr. Davidoff tosses out a quick line to sum up each player's value, noting that Willingham, "always hits" while Nick Johnson is a, "a better player than (Aubrey) Huff," who is also rumored to be available, but, of course Johnson is, "far more injury prone." Mr. Davidoff then goes on to explain the Nationals' strategy going into late July, writing:

"Everything must go! Well, maybe not Adam Dunn, signed through next year."

Was yesterday's trade for Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett just the beginning as Washington Post writer Thomas Boswell speculated in a Nationals Journal post yesterday entitled, "The Meaning of the Nats Trade"? Mr. Boswell mentions Nick Johnson, Adam Dunn, Josh Willingham, Willie Harris, Joe Beimel and Ron Villone as players the Nationals could potentially deal. MLB.com's Bill Ladson writes, in an article on yesterday's deal entitled, "Nats get Morgan, Burnett in deal with Bucs", the Cristian Guzman, "...is on the trading block", with the Nationals looking for "young starting pitching". Enjoy it while you can, this might be the last month of the Nationals as we know them...

Renyel Pinto reinstated

Renyel Pinto returns from the DL.

On Friday, the Marlins announced Pinto was returned from his rehab assignment and reinstated on the 25-man roster. Right-hander Cristhian Martinez was optioned to Double-A Jacksonville.

Pinto had been on the disabled list with left elbow inflammation, retroactive to May 23.

That was quick rehab assignment in New Orleans, especially considering he only appeared in two games and threw two innings total. But, hey, I'm not complaining. We need the arm and Martinez could do with a little more seasoning.

No word yet on how they plain to use Pinto. I guess in some respects that will be determined by his performance.

Marlins DL News

There is some news about a couple of the Marlins presently on the DL.

Alfredo Amezaga's recovery from a deep bone bruise in his left knee continues to go slowly. Gonzalez said that Amezaga, who has been on the disabled list since May 17, might not be ready to rejoin the Marlins until after the All-Star break in July.

Left-handed reliever Renyel Pinto, meanwhile, could be available by the weekend when the Marlins and New York Yankees play a three-game series at LandShark Stadium. Pinto threw 14 pitches in a rehabilitation appearance Sunday and was scheduled to pitch Tuesday and Wednesday for Triple A New Orleans.

Since Pinto went on the DL on May 23, the Marlins have had only one left-hander -- Dan Meyer -- in their bullpen.

Deep bone bruise are tough and estimate given as to when Alfredo will return is pure spectulation. But it looks like it going to be awhile.

Renyel Pinto has thrown two innings of scoreless relief, allowed one hit, struckout one and as yet to walk a batter. We will see how it goes, but he could be back soon. Of course when Pinto does return, someone is going down and my guess is that it will be Cristhian Martinez.

Some things to read while watering the ~~dog~~ lawn.

Bill Hall was the story of the day yesterday, plating the winning run on a tenth inning single, then running off the field with the rest of his teammates to celebrate in the clubhouse. Hall was only hitting in that spot because of a botched double switch, but he made the most of the opportunity. Hall has been taking extra BP and working to eliminate negativity, and apparently it paid off.

So, how unlikely was yesterday's sequence of events? The Elias Sports Bureau (via TheJay) noted all of the following:

Bill Hall was only the second player in the last five seasons to end a streak of 0-for-20 or more with a walkoff hit, joining D'Angelo Jimenez (2007).
Chris Carpenter and Yovani Gallardo were the first opposing pitchers to both carry no hitters through five innings since William VanLandingham and Kevin Brown did it in 1997.
Chris Carpenter was the first Cardinals pitcher since 1917 to throw eight shutout innings, strike out ten or more batters and not get the win.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals are having a historically bad month of May at the plate. After being shut out (and allowed just six baserunners) yesterday, the Cards are hitting just .218/.282/.369 in May, and scoring 3.3 runs per game. Bernie Miklasz compares this month to some of the worst offensive months in franchise history.

Yesterday's game also marked the Brewer debut of Frank Catalanotto, who went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter and spent a few innings patrolling right field.

J.J. Hardy is expected back in the lineup tonight, meaning Craig Counsell might finally get a day off. Counsell, who is 38 years old and playing on a bad knee, has gone 3 for his last 17 while being asked to start five straight games. Even after slowing down a bit, Counsell has at least one hit in eight of his last nine starts, but his line has fallen from .342/.424/.466 to .311/.382/.411 over the last four days.

Looking back to the weekend for a moment:

Apparently hitting his 250th home run was the proof Mike Cameron has needed to be certain he doesn't suck.
Ken Macha responded to criticism that he didn't argue the call hard enough when Joe Mauer's foul ball became an HBP. He basically said he didn't get ejected because umpires will let you say whatever you want when you're right.

As Tristarscoop noted in this FanPost and expanded on over at Cute Sports, the Brewers continue to be mentioned in rumors as a potential suitor for Jake Peavy. Ken Rosenthal seems to think the Brewers are pretty unlikely to make the move. It really seems like all the smoke is coming from a small handful of sources here, and I don't think there's much, if any, fire behind it.

Meanwhile, MLB Trade Rumors takes a look at the offseason ahead for the Brewers. The only option decision the Brewers will have to make is on Braden Looper, who has a mutual option, but Mike Cameron, Trevor Hoffman and Jason Kendall will all be free agents, and J.J. Hardy, Dave Bush, Corey Hart, Rickie Weeks, Jody Gerut, Seth McClung, Todd Coffey, and Carlos Villanueva will all be arbitration eligible.

On Power Rankings:

Whatifsports dropped the Brewers from fifth to seventh.
Inside the Majors ranked the Brewers third in their inaugural rankings.
Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star dropped the Brewers from third to ninth.
Foul Balls has the Brewers third in the NL and sixth overall.
GoatRiders of the Apocalypse has the Brewers second in the Central, behind the Cardinals.

Mariners: Placed Kenji Johjima on the DL with a broken toe.

Brian Shouse's injury opened the door for the major league return of Randy Choate, but his first outing yesterday extended a bizarre streak. Choate failed to retire a batter yesterday, so while he's pitched in the big leagues in both 2007 and 2009, he hasn't recorded an out since 2006.

We should all be thankful every day that the Brewer organization has never allowed Dusty Baker to manage its pitchers. Aaron Harang, one of the better pitchers in the NL before making an extended bullpen appearance on short rest and derailing himself last season, was allowed to return after a two hour rain delay yesterday. Harang faced just two more batters to finish the fifth and be eligible for a win, but at what cost?

This is a lawsuit waiting to happen: Cardinals SS Khalil Greene is battling a well-publicized anxiety issue involving self-punishment. The Cardinals have not placed him on the DL, and are instead reportedly trying to trade him. I'm sure that's great for his mental health.

Memorial Day led to some great unintentional comedy moments, including a Royals uniform resembling a Bomb Pop and first pitches thrown by Mr. T and Darth Vader.

Oh, and happy birthday to Joe Koshansky, who turns 27 today.

It was a month ago that I wrote that the Marlins, then 11-4, were a fluke and due for a regression. They were in first place and the Phillies were a measly 6-8. The Phillies swept the Marlins and are now 24-18, in first place themselves, and the Marlins have barely won any games at all since then and sit in fourth place at 20-25. This article will not have quite the detail of that article, as I'm in the Baseball Prospectus Idol competition and need to start preparing for next week's submission (don't forget to vote!), but I'll link to that old article here. A number of the players have changed, but I think I have the current rosters right. I've also updated the season stats.

Monday will pit Jamie Moyer against Chris Volstad. Volstad has been solid this year, with an ERA of 3.64. He has had significant BABIP luck (.244) but also been unlucky with homeruns (18% HR/Flyball), so overall he probably should be in the low 4's. That will be the toughest game of the series given Moyer's recent struggles. On Tuesday, the Phillies send Joe Blanton to the mound against Andrew Miller. Miller has been wild this year walking over 5 per 9, without striking out many more than 6 per 9. He's been lucky on homeruns per flyball, and will regress...hopefully against us! On Wednesday, the Phils sent Brett Myers out against Hayden Penn. Hayden Penn has only started one game this year (a disastrous start against the Diamondbacks five days ago), but with Nolasco sent to AAA and Anibal Sanchez on the disabled list, Penn will get another shot.

If you throw fastball after fastball on the outside corner on every 1-2 count, the hitters will respond by hitting singles to the opposite field over and over again and your BABIP will go up. However, pitchers learn to mix up their pitches and BABIP ends up lacking persistence due to the constant game theoretical reaction that pitchers and hitters take. For Myers, his bizarre refusal to use his curveball early in the game leaves him especially vulernable to RHB who know it isn't coming. A little game theoretical mixed strategy would probably allow him to finally live up to his peripherals which suggest a low HR rate and borderline ace stuff.

The Marlins placed Renyel Pinto on the 15-day DL.

Marlins left-handed reliever Renyel Pinto has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation, retroactive to May 23.

Taking Pinto's place on the roster is right-hander Cristhian Martinez, who was recalled from Double-A Jacksonville.

The move leaves Dan Meyer as the only lefty in the pen which on paper could be problematic since the next opponent is the Phillies. However, with the way Pinto was pitching recently, Martinez couldn't do worse.
