Unfortunately I'm having to do a Flotsam and Jetsam since I am either having computer problems or an internet connection problem. Now, it is not the worse of things to miss my comments on a story and actually, it may be a relief. But don't get use to it, it won't last long.

Anyway, here we go.

Joe Capozzi interviews Mark Wiley after he was fired. Got to admit I am still a little confused as to why the Coyote was made the scapegoat.

Livan Hernandez is facing foreclosure amongst other financial problems. (Via Clark Spencer)

Finally, Fangraphs takes a look at Chris Coghlan and Brett Carroll. If the stats make your eyes glaze over, just read the words, Jack Moore does a good job of explaining in words the results of his analysis.

That concludes this very undesired Flotsam and Jetsam. By undesired, I mean by me, your thoughts may vary.

It seems that in second day of the Arizona Fall League a Marlins prospect did well.

Today’s top award goes to unheralded Florida Marlins OF prospect Bryan Petersen, who collected three hits including his first AFL HR and two doubles.

Congratulations Bryan!

Petersen is an outfielder, mostly CF, who is big time bottled neck when it comes to garner a job in the outfield with the Marlins. Obviously there are somethings he has going against him. One is his age, he will be 24 in April and he is still in Double-A. But that can be worked around, many have hit their stride later. He has a nice arm, but nothing like Brett Carroll's, but then again who does. Eventually Stanton will come due, and there is no way the club is going to give up on Maybin and Morrison can play the outfield also. Not to mention Coghlan and Carroll.

Petersen does have some speed, he stole 13 bases in the minors last season. But unfortunately he doesn't know when to use it, he was caught stealing 12 times.

But probably the most important thing in Petersen's favor is that he is an Anteater and they never give up.

The Marlins are short a couple more coaches

A couple of the Marlins coaches have refused to rejoin the team for next season.

Third base-outfield coach Bo Porter and bullpen coach Steve Foster declined offers to return, the Marlins said Friday.

This will be different, we will get a new third base coach to blame when the Marlins don't score the runs we think they should. I will say this about Porter, with the exception of Hermida who has never figured out how to play the field, the Marlins outfield did show some signs of improvement, though it can't be found in any stat known to mankind.

Coghlan did improve as he gained more experience. However, I will duly note, if you are going to try to hide someone's defensive deficiencies, left-field is a mighty fine place to hide them. Coghlan may one day make a very good left-fielder should the Marlins decide to keep him there.

Cody is an excellent outfielder but he did have an off year for him. I'm sure there are outfielders who would consider it a major success if they would've put up his numbers.

Brett Carroll was unbelievable. Now how much of that can be contributed to Porter, I don't know.

I guess what I'm getting at is that no matter his problems as the third base coach, which is always unfairly judged by fans, and that is our duty to do so, he did a decent job with the outfielders.

As for Steve Foster, I cannot say. But I do know this, the protective net was always raised on time with great efficiency. Of course, coordinating that may have been Arsenault's domain, and he will be returning.

I guess the bottom line is that Bo Porter and Steve Foster won't be returning, so the Marlins have four coaching spots to fill.

Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the Game

Homer Bailey. 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K. Seriously, who else should it be? Dude deserved the win.

Key Plays

With two outs in the 3rd inning, Drew Stubbs singled and stole 2nd base. Drew Sutton followed with a single to drive in Stubbs, which drew applause from the crowd.

Other than that, the game was quiet until the Reds 8th inning. Sutton led off the inning with a triple and the scored on a base hit by Joey Votto, giving the Reds a 2-0 lead.

Dusty Baker felt it wise to bring in Francisco Cordero for the 5th day in a row. Not surprisingly, it wasn't. Chris Coghlan led off the inning with a low line drive to left field that Wladimir Balentien lost in the lights, allowing Coghlan to reach first. After a Nick Johnson line out, Hanley Ramirez singled and Jorge Cantu doubled, scoring Coghlan. A ground out by Dan Uggla pushed the tying run across the plate with 2 outs.

The bleeding didn't stop though. John Baker singled to drive in Cantu. Cody Ross followed with another bloop single and Cordero's night was mercifully over. Brett Carroll doubled off of Jared Burton to drive in the 4th run of the inning, a run that ended up being the most important one.

Juan Francisco ate his first major league sized child with his first career home run in the 9th inning, but the Reds went meekly in the 9th after that as Kevin Barker and Jay Bruce both struck out and Drew Stubbs lined out to right field.

I hate graphs that look like that.

Other Notes

The loss is the first loss by the Reds this season in a game in which they took the lead into the 9th inning. They were previously 57-0 in those games.

The loss ended the Reds 8-game home winning streak and 4-game overall winning streak.

You can use vinegar and baking soda to get that musty smell out of towels. Don't use laundry detergent or fabric softener.

Juan Francisco is the 7th Reds player to hit his first major league home run this season. Name the other six.

The Reds reach 80 losses for the 9th consecutive season. They must win 13 of their last 14 to not have their 9th straight losing season.

This was Homer Bailey's 6th straight start with 114 or more pitches.

A three hour and ten minute game after a two hour and thirty-minute rain delay is enough to test any fan's patience, and an 11-3 loss that featured the end-of-'09 Syracuse Chiefs' bullpen marching out to the mound to get pounded one after another got old real quick. The difference early was that the Marlins were cashing in on the runners Marco Estrada let on, or at least Jorge Cantu was. Hanley Ramirez K’d looking and hit into a force in his first two RBI chances tonight and Cantu followed Ramirez with a 3-run HR in the first after a leadoff single by Chris Coghlan and a walk to Nick Johnson, and a two-run double in the third for a 5-1 lead that chased Estrada after the right-hander gave up back to back walks to Coghlan and Johnson to start the frame. Estrada's out with one down in the third, having thrown 61 pitches, 35 for strikes and allowed 3 hits and 5 ER.

The Nationals, however, when it was still a game, came up short in several opportunities. Ian Desmond walked his way on in the first and Ryan Zimmerman singled, but Adam Dunn followed with his 159th K of '09, and Josh Willingham struck out to let Marlins' starter Anibal Sanchez off the hook on a first and second, no-out chance. Ian Desmond doubled to start the third, but only got within 90ft of home before he was stranded. In the fifth, after Ryan Zimmerman hit into a double play with Willie Harris on second and Ian Desmond at first, Adam Dunn finally cashed one in, scoring Harris from third with an RBI double to make it 5-2. By the end of the sixth though, once Logan Kensing had given up 3 runs on a solo home run, a single and a two-run blast before he recorded an out, the game was completely out of reach, then Victor Garate, who allowed a solo HR and a two-out double in his DC debut gave up an RBI double and a sac fly to score two in the seventh and Zack Segovia, who gave up a grand slam in his first appearance with Washington, surrendered a leadoff triple, a walk and a sac fly to start the eighth before retiring the next two Marlins in order.

• Maxwell And Desmond Get It Done.

The Nationals’ one early run comes on a big opposite field blast by Justin Maxwell, his first of the season, and it goes out to deeeep right to leadoff the second, and Maxwell comes back with his second of the year on a second-deck job to left in the the eighth when the Nationals are already down 10-2. Ian Desmond was 4 for 4 with a walk tonight, and two games into his MLB career, the 23-year-old rookie shortstop is 6 for 8 with 3 doubles, 1 HR and 4 RBI's, and he also made slick play on a grounder from Hanley Ramirez with runners on first and second in the third, sliding to his right side to field a sharp grounder and throwing from his back to get a force at third. Ryan Zimmerman goes 1 for 5 with 2 K's and the Nationals' third baseman strands 6, grounding into two double plays for 22 GIDP in '09, good for 4th in the NL behind Kevin Kouzmanoff (25), Yadier Molina (26) and Miguel Tejada (28).

GAME REPORT:

Florida Marlins At Washington Nationals. Game 142 Of 162.

Anibal Sanchez gets Willie Harris looking to start the first, then issues a one-out walk to Ian Desmond, who’s starting at short tonight in Florida. Ryan Zimmerman moves Desmond up with a single to right. Adam Dunn K’s chasing a 2-2 fastball outside for out number two. Two on, two out for Josh Willingham. The Hammer gets a two-strike change and K’s way out in front...Marco Estrada, the DC right-hander making his debut as a starter, gives up a leadoff single to Chris Coghlan who snaps a grounder through second. Nick Johnson doesn’t see anything he likes, and the ump agrees. Single and a walk to put two on for Hanley Ramirez. Estrada gets squeezed on the inside corner when he "misses" with a 2-2 heater, but he hits the outside edge to get Hanley Ramirez looking with two on and no one out, uh, before the K, that is. Jorge Cantu battles and finally gets a fastball up that goes out in a hurry for a 3-0 Marlins’ lead early. The Mustachioed John Baker takes a two-strike fastball. Dan Uggla doesn’t see the 1-2 curve coming and it’s 3-0 Fish after one.

Justin Maxwell starts the second with a fly, ball, to, right and GONE!!! J-Max hits one all the way the other way into the second deck in right. 3-1 ballgame. Josh Bard grounds out to second, but Alberto Gonzalez gets one through the middle of the infield for a one-out single. Marco Estrada gets down a good enough bunt for Gonzalez to move up. Willie Harris pops out to third to end the Nationals’ second...Cody Ross rips a low liner to third, but that’s where Zimmerman plays. Brett Carroll pops out to second. Marco Estrada gets the opposing pitcher swinging.

Ian Desmond doubles off the old-timey scoreboard in left, sliding in headfirst ahead of Coghlan’s throw. Ryan Zimmerman K’s chasing an 0-2 heater outside. Adam Dunn hits a weak grounder toward third to at least move Desmond up. Josh Willingham walks in front of Justin Maxwell. J-Max flies out to Brett Carroll in short right...Chris Coghlan walks to start the Marlins’ third. Nick Johnson takes the second straight walk. Hanley Ramirez grounds to short, Ian Desmond makes a sliding play and throw to third for the force from his back. Jorge Cantu knocks Estrada out with a two-run double to the left-center gap for a 5-1 Florida lead. John Baker grounds back to the mound as DC righty Saul Rivera settles things down. Ian Desmond can’t barehand a weak grounder up the middle by Dan Uggla, but Cantu almost gets nailed going to far around third. Cody Ross up with runners on first and third. Ross swings through a two-strike change.

Josh Bard grounds out to start the fourth. Alberto Gonzalez hits a low liner to Uggla at second. Pinch hitter Jesus Flores flies deeep to right, but Cody Ross robs him with a catch as he hits the wall...Ross Detwiler gets back into the action for the first time since his September call-up. Detwiler vs Brett Carroll. Carroll grounds out to Desmond at short to start the bottom of the fourth. Detwiler walks Anibal Sanchez. Chris Coghlan pops out over the mound. Nick Johnson grounds out to Dunn to end the fourth.

Willie Harris walks to start the fifth and moves up a base when Ian Desmond smacks a single through second. Ryan Zimmerman grounds to short, Hanley Ramirez to Dan Uggla to Nick Johnson double play. Adam Dunn lines a single up the middle to score Harris from third, 5-2 Marlins. Josh Willingham vs Anibal Sanchez. Hammer walks and Sanchez is out. Tim Wood gets Justin Maxwell to chase strike three to end the DC fifth...Hanley Ramirez takes a leadoff walk in front of Cantu. Cantu flies out to Willie Harris in straight center. John Baker goes the other way with a line drive out to left. Dan Uggla shatters his bat lining out to first.

Josh Bard starts the sixth at the plate. Fly ball to left for the first out. Tim Wood gets a ground ball to second for Dan Uggla to handle. Jorge Padilla K’s in a pinch hit appearance...Logan Kensing takes over for DC and gives up a HR to left to Cody Ross for a 6-2 lead in the sixth. Brett Carroll hits a single to center. Gaby Sanchez gets hold of a hanging slider over the middle and he hits it real far, two-run HR, 8-2 Marlins. Chris Coghlan grounds out to first. Willie Harris hits the wall hard while catching Nick Johnson’s deep fly. Logan Kensing gets a line drive to short from Hanley Ramirez to end the sixth.

Brendan Donnelly gets Willie Harris to drill one straight down for the catcher to handle. Ian Desmond rips a one-out double to left on a line drive. Zimmerman swings through a two-strike fastball inside. Adam Dunn will not swing at the fastball outside, even with two strikes...Victor Garate takes over for the Nationals against Jorge Cantu. Leadoff walk. John Baker gets hit by a pitch. Dan Uggla flies out to left. Cody Ross doubles off the wall in left center to score one. 9-2. Brett Carroll flies out to center to score Baker. 10-2. Pinch hitter Wes Helms flies to left to end the seventh.

Josh Willingham K’s to start the eighth. J-Max hits a flat-out bomb off Matt Lindstrom!!! Deeeeep to left and into the upper deck!! One to each side tonight. 10-3 Florida. Josh Bard flies out to left. Alberto Gonzalez lines to center to end the Nationals’ eighth...Zack Segovia takes over for DC. Chris Coghlan triples to the wall in center, and probably could’ve scored on an error on a throw in. Nick Johnson walks and is replaced by Andy Gonzalez. Hanley Ramirez hits a sac fly to center. 11-3 Marlins. Jorge Cantu takes strike three. Willie Harris flies out to left. Ian Desmond singles on a short fly to right that drops in front of Brett Carroll. Ryan Zimmerman grounds to second, Dan Uggla tags Desmond and throws to first, double play to end it. 11-3 Marlins win.

Nationals now 49-93.

After last night's game Chris Leroux was optioned to Jacksonville.

After Florida beat the Astros, 9-2, Leroux was optioned back to Double-A.

Given the fact that Cody, our one true outfielder, is a little bit iffy, I expect the Marlins will call up a position player who can play the outfield. In other words, Brett Carroll may be on the way.

Or at least that is what I hope they will do. The Marlins have an off-day after the series with the Rockies and with Anibal Sanchez on the horizon, they don't need to carry 13 pitchers at this point. Also, as stupid as it sounds, Sean West going six innings really helped out.

Even if Cody is good to go, it would behoove the team to get Bonifacio out of center. That is just a disaster waiting to happen.

For all the Maybin fans out there, he has been on the DL and he may return to action tonight. Carroll is the far superior option.

While Brett Carroll may not be a fan favorite, however, he is a favorite of mine. Carroll made his first start with the Zephyrs last night since being sent down. (I still don't have a full understanding as to why the team's nickname is named after a luxury train from Colorado that no longer exist.) But be that as it may, he had a good night.

Batting in the five hole he went 2 for 5 with a double.

Trust me, we will see Brett Carroll again. Now it may not be until September, but he will be back.

After last night's game, we heard that Gaby Sanchez and Brett Carroll were optioned to the minors. This brought a scream of disapproval from the back seat by LadyFish, Spud hitting the breaks, a call from GameFish and me saying what did they say.

The Marlins optioned infielder Gaby Sanchez and outfielder Brett Carroll to Class AAA New Orleans after Friday’s game. Right-hander Matt Lindstrom will be activated Saturday from the disabled list, but he won’t return to the closer’s role just yet.

Gaby is understandable since he has just been wasting away on the pine. And anyway, the Marlins just traded for a first baseman, and Sanchez needs more playing time than the Marlins were willing to give him.

Which brings us to the scream, the quick stopping of cars, the phone call and my hopeful but misguided disbelief about Brett Carroll returning to the minors.

So the Marlins are going with two outfielders, Ross and Hermida. And a couple of out of position players, Coghlan and presumably Bonifacio to make a so called run at the playoffs. I don't get this at all.

There was never any doubt when Lindstrom was back to form, and he is, giving up a two run homer in his last outing in the minors, that he would rejoin the team. And if the club feels it needs thirteen pitchers with a 13 game stretch without a break on the horizon , then fine. But I can think of some players who weren't contributing anywhere near as much as Carroll.

The boy just can't catch a break.

-- Bottom of the 8th, 2-2 tie...Washington's left-handed reliever Ron Villone takes the mound...

There was a time when DC's lefty reliever Ron Villone was known around here as Ron VILL0.00NE. The Nationals' 39-year-old left-hander joined the roster on May 7th as part of "Acting" DC GM Mike Rizzo's desperate attempt to rebuild Washington's bullpen after some ugly early struggles. Villone reeled off 17.0 scoreless innings before he allowed the first run to cross while he stood on the mound. Since giving up the first, however, Villone's allowed 7 runs, 5 earned, in 5.0 IP, in which he's given up 11 hits, and the tailspin continued tonight as he allowed a leadoff double, sac bunt and sac fly by Florida to put the Marlins ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning of a game Washington's returning starter Scott Olsen had held tied from the fourth inning on...

Shairon Martis, according to Washington Post writer Chico Harlan's Nationals Journal post entitled, "Wait! Martis Demoted To Class AAA, Stammen Back In Rotation", "declined comment...after learning the news of his demotion," yesterday afternoon. Martis was sent down(up really?) to the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, NY to make room for the returning DC lefty Scott Olsen. After working his way back from what was officially called "shoulder tendenitis", Olsen took the mound tonight for the first time since May 16, and threw 94 pitches, 66 for strikes, over 7.0 IP in which he allowed 6 hits and 2 ER while collecting 7 K's.

After Ryan Zimmerman's leadoff HR and Wil Nieves' two-out RBI single in the second inning off Marlins' right-hander Ricky Nolasco, Olsen allowed Florida to tie it at 2-2 in the third. Brett Carroll doubled, moved to third on a sac bunt by Nolasco and scored on a one-out RBI single by Chris Coghlan to make 2-1, and Emilio Bonifacio tripled before Hanley Ramirez singled to tie it at 2-2. Olsen retired the Marlins in order in the 4th, 5th and 6th and then gave up a two-out single in the seventh before popping Carroll up to center to strand the only baserunner he allowed after the third. Nolasco (W, 5-6) was nasty as well, striking out 8 in 8.0 IP in which he surrenders just 4 hits and 2 ER. Ron Villone takes the loss, (L, 3-5), and Julian Tavarez gets a talking-to and a finger in his chest from DC Manager Manny Acta after Tavarez walks 3 and gives up a 1 hit and 1 ER in just 0.1 IP. Marlins' relievers Dan Meyer and Leo Nunez get it right, holding and saving Nolasco's hard-earned W.

Ryan Zimmerma--THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!! THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!!!

Ryan Zimmerman had hit just 2 HR's in his last 33 games, with one on May 22nd at home against the Orioles and his last HR before tonight on June 13th in Tampa Bay, Florida. Ricky Nolasco started Ryan Zimmerman with a fastball in the second, and Zimmerma--THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!! THE KIDS CALL HIM ZIM!!! launched it to left and into the second deck above the outdated out-of-town scoreboard for what was, at the time, a 1-0 Nationals' lead. Zimmerman finishes tonight's game 1 for 4 with a .298 AVG, 13 HR's and 44 RBI's in '09.

Can We Go Back To The AL And Away From The Marlins...And Bonifacio...

Emilio Bonifacio was 8 for 23 for a .348 AVG before tonight's game, with a .400 OBP, .565 SLG, .965 OPS, 7 runs scored, 1 triple, 1 HR, 4 RBI's and 4 steals in 6 games against the same Washington Nationals who traded him (along with 2 prospects) to Florida in exchange for tonight's starting pitcher, Scott Olsen, and right fielder, Josh Willingham. Bonifacio went 3 for 4 tonight, with a triple, a run scored, and the game-winning sac-fly RBI in the eighth. The Marlins are now 7-0 against the Washington Nationals in 2009.

Didn't see the game, so let's go to the box score.

If I'm reading this right, Bonifacio got a very rare walk and actually stole a couple of bases without getting caught, another rarity. Then Ramirez drove him in on a ground ball out.

In the third inning Brett Carroll hit his second career home run to left. And ladies and gentlemen, that would be the end of the Marlins scoring for the game.

On the pitching side of things, Volstad performed well during his six innings of work, but still is giving up home runs incredibly often for a sinker ball pitcher. Also Volstad threw a career high 116 pitches, with him being so big and strong, it probably won't affect him next time out, but is something to keep an eye on. But when Chris left the game the score was tied 2-2.

The bullpen did okay, but not okay enough to keep from getting the loss in the game. Sanchez pitched a strong inning. Nunez returned from the ankle strain and pitch what looks to be a very event filled scoreless inning. After that, the Hopper came on and got an out before giving up a single to Bartlett, who promptly stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. The wild pitch probably just hasten what was going to eventually happen. If the wild pitch never occurred, Bartlett probably steals third anyway to put the Fish in the same situation. A sacrifice fly later, and the Fish lose.

I've read box scores that I liked better this one....just saying.
