The Detroit Tigers got a preview of what facing the Chicago White Sox could be like for the next three or four seasons. Unfortunately, the Tigers are very much dealing with right now, and trying to win the AL Central.

Jake Peavy looked much like the same pitcher who's been one of the best in the National League in recent years, overpowering Tigers batters with a blazing fastball and hard-breaking slider. Overall, Peavy pitched seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts.

The shame of it all is that Eddie Bonine pitched almost as well with less dominating stuff. Bonine pitched into the sixth inning without allowing a hit. But when he finally did give one up, it was a doozy. Bonine threw two change-ups in the same spot to Gordon Beckham, and Beckham didn't miss that second one, launching it into the left-field seats for a two-run homer.

That was all the offense the White Sox needed. Heck, it was all the offense they got. The White Sox only knocked out two hits against Tigers pitching tonight. Two hits. And it was enough to win.

But as well as Peavy pitched, the Tigers' offense also squandered a few scoring chances.

In the second, Detroit had runners on first and second with one out. But Peavy came back to strike out the next two batters. The Tigers had the same situation in the third, but Magglio Ordonez hit into a double play. Finally, in the sixth, they had two baserunners yet again, only to see Peavy strike out Miguel Cabrera and get Aubrey Huff to ground out to second.

Ultimately, it was a night Tigers fans are painfully familiar with. This time, however, it was due to a pitcher who's had the reputation of doing this for a while. And if Peavy keeps this up, he might be a factor in this playoff race, after all.

Whimper:

Cabrera fought Peavy hard in his first at-bat, battling through 10 pitches before walking. But in his other two at-bats, Peavy made him look rather silly. BigMig finished 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Brandon Inge also had a rough night, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Purr:

Did you notice that the Tigers pitched all rookies tonight? Bonine (who still qualifies), followed by Ryan Perry, Fu-Te Ni, and Casey Fien. Again, they all combined to give up just two hits.

Comment of the Night:

So let me get this straight....today...

my car was stolen. The Tigers lost. The Royals morphed back into the Royals. The Twins will not lose.

Tomorrow has to be better. Hopefully all on those fronts.

As if you didn't already know that the Detroit Tigers were an absolutely maddening team to watch, this weekend's series with the Oakland A's provided yet another example of frustrating play.

After struggling to score runs on Friday and Saturday, the Tigers finally broke through - albeit late in the game - and put up enough offense to adequately support its pitching staff. Unfortunately, the pitchers couldn't hold up their end this time around, so the offense wasn't nearly enough.

Facing Oakland for the third time this season, Rick Porcello couldn't continue his recent run of success. The pitches that had great movement on them over his past four starts spun and hung in the middle of the plate. And the A's didn't miss them. Jack Cust, especially, pounced upon those meatballs, smacking two home runs off Porcello, resulting in four runs and really all of the offense Oakland needed.

The Tigers staged a rally in the later innings against the A's bullpen, thanks largely to Miguel Cabrera's opposite field two-run homer in the eighth. It was the 200th of his career, and came at an important moment, cutting Oakland's lead to 5-4.

But Fu-Te Ni and Ryan Perry couldn't hold the A's back in their half of the inning, getting trampled under a five-run stampede. Perry, in particular, couldn't keep the ball in the park, serving up homers to Landon Powell and Cliff Pennington. It was a rather shocking performance, considering how well Perry pitched the night before (1.2 scoreless innings).

Why Jim Leyland opted for Perry on a second straight day, rather than a presumably rested Brandon Lyon or Fernando Rodney is between him and his Marlboro Reds. Another mystery, of course, is how a Tigers lineup could score only one run (with eight strikeouts?) against Brett Tomko, who was only making his second start of the season. It all adds up to a continually baffling team on the road.

Purr:

Cabrera's home run was part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate, and extended what is now an eight-game hitting streak. BigMig also has two homers and eight RBIs during that span.

Getting Thursday and most of Friday off seems to have helped Curtis Granderson, who's gotten three hits in his last three games, including yesterday's leadoff home run. And Marcus Thames broke his 0-for-12 slump with a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh.

Whimper:

Normally, we come to praise Alex Avila. But the west coast doesn't agree with him so far. Maybe the time change threw off his circadian rhythms or something like that. Regardless of the reason, Avila batted 0-for-7 over the weekend.

And Aubrey Huff has had a less than impressive first week as a Tiger, capped off by an 0-for-4 performance yesterday. Billfer compared him to Sean Casey, with his frequent groundouts to second base. That is only so painful because, thus far, it is so true.

Morning Prowl: Bench Armando, Imitating Seay, Guillen in Left, and Bullpen Prospects

Lynn Henning says he would be surprised if Armando Galarraga makes his scheduled start Wednesday night in Boston. Not because he's hurt, but because he's not giving the Tigers a chance to win when he pitches. Henning speculates that either Zach Miner or Chris Lambert will toe the slab, as Mario Impemba would put it, in Galarraga's place.

Note to the FOX Sports Detroit "Tigers Live" crew: If you don't get Fu-Te Ni doing his impression of Bobby Seay on camera for all to see, then what is the point of your show existing? (Even better, maybe you can have Joel Zumaya in the background holding up a picture of Uncle Fester. Don't make him hold the picture up too high, though. Trick shoulder and all.)

Is there a worse idea than putting Carlos Guillen in left field to play in front of the Green Monster? Or might it actually make sense, as Guillen wouldn't have to run around as much (or make long throws) in Boston's shorter left field?

Meanwhile, Leyland says he'd like to use Guillen a bit at third base toward the end of the season, if his shoulder can make the throws. However, Tiger Geist wonders if Guillen should be factored into the mix for second base next spring.

If you're among those who thought (or still think) that Aubrey Huff could be a useful extra bat for the Tigers to pick up, the Baltimore Sun reports that he (along with Melvin Mora) cleared waivers. Actually, the Tigers are mentioned as one of the teams that expressed interest in Huff earlier this year. He's batting .255/.321/.404 with 12 homers and 68 RBIs.

This was addressed in yesterday's GameThread, but for those of you wondering why Alex Avila wasn't used to pinch-hit, it's because Leyland wants to save him to catch later in the game, if necessary.

Ken Rosenthal has an interesting observation about Alex Rios's contract: For the same amount Rios would cost in annual salary, a team could've signed Bobby Abreu, Orlando Hudson, Russell Branyan, and Adam Everett this season. And still had $800,000 left over.

More from Henning: Relievers Cody Satterwhite and Robbie Weinhardt get the spotlight in his weekly minor league report. Satterwhite has 12 saves and a 3.25 ERA, with 47 strikeouts in 44.1 innings at Double-A Erie. Weinhardt has pitched in Lakeland and Erie this season, compiling 58 strikeouts in 48.2 innings and a 1.42 ERA.

Part 2 of Billfer's night with Fox Sports Detroit has now been posted at The Detroit Tigers Weblog. If you've ever wondered what happens behind the scenes during a Tigers broadcast, Bill sat in the FSD truck last Friday night and got to see and hear it all. It's pretty impressive to consider everything that goes into the decision to show a certain graphic or switch to a particular camera view.

(Part 1 covered what goes on before the game.)

Kurt hands out his mid-season awards at Mack Avenue Tigers, including MVP, Cy Young Award, best offseason addition, and best moment.

Buster Olney ranks the Tigers, who he thought "had virtually no shot at winning the division" in the spring, at the top of his 10 first-half surprises.

Jason Beck looks at the first half that was and the second half that shall be for the Tigers, while also naming the team's biggest strength and greatest weakness, and predicting their final record.

The Spot Starters write out their mid-season report card for the Tigers, grading each individual player on the roster, naming Detroit's first-half MVP, and predict who could heat up or cool off in the second half.

Trey Hillman might manage the Kansas City Royals, but during Monday's Home Run Derby, he made quite an impression on Brandon Inge after he went 0-for-10.

Both Kansas City's Dayton Moore (who doesn't have much use for defensive statistics) and Cleveland's Mark Shapiro are listed among Jon Heyman's 12 general managers facing a lot of pressure in the second half of the season.

Did you look at tonight's pitching match-up and have this one written off before you sat down to watch? Zack Greinke, probably the best pitcher in the American League this season, versus Luke French, making the second major league start of his career? This wasn't going to end well, was it?

Au Contraire, Mon Frère.

Greinke led off the game by putting the first two batters he faced on base with a walk and single, and the Tigers pounced on the opportunity to score runs early (breaking away from their usual tendency). Marcus Thames and Clete Thomas brought those runners home with a groundout and single, respectively, and within five batters, Detroit had scored more earned runs against Greinke than they had in their previous 18 innings against him.

But could French make that lead hold up? He allowed hits in each of his first three innings, but the Royals didn't get a runner past second base until the seventh inning, when he left a 87 m.p.h. fastball up in the strike zone for Alberto Callaspo to launch over the left field fence. Besides that, the only K.C. batter who gave French any trouble was Billy Butler, who smacked three doubles. But the Royals couldn't put anyone on base in front of him.

For the night, French gave up one run and six hits in 6.1 innings, adding two strikeouts and one walk. The rookie out-dueled the six-year veteran. (Though Greinke didn't exactly pitch a stinker, allowing three runs in six innings, while racking up nine strikeouts.)

Jim Leyland passed out faint praise in his post-game interview, saying French didn't have his best stuff but pitched very well. Okay, we get it: he's trying to keep the kid level-headed. But French most certainly deserved the standing ovation he received at Comerica Park as he walked off the field.

Roar:

It wasn't just French who held up that slim lead, however. The bullpen did a great job after taking over in the seventh. Fu-Te Ni, Brandon Lyon, and Fernando Rodney pitched 2.2 perfect innings, striking out five of the eight batters they faced. What a relief (pardon the pun) to watch relievers come in and not put a game in jeopardy by walking batters. It's even better when the closer comes in and pitches a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts.

New Arms of the Week - Fu-Te Ni and Clayton Mortensen

Two newbies took the mound for major league teams last week. One of them is still in the majors. Clayton Mortensen was called-up by the Cardinals to work three poor innings. Fu-Te Ni, on the other hand, has stuck with the Tigers. Ni looks good, dealing some fairly nasty stuff and working both sides of the rubber, a la Trevor Hoffman.

Here are the basics (speed, spin movement in inches lateral and vertical, spin direction and speed). More goodies after the jump.

First up, Ni's release points. The reason some folks have noted a different release point for Ni's change, relative to the fastball/slider, is actually set-up by uneven usage of the pitch against left- and right-handed hitters, and combined with his shifting towards the first base sid of the rubber against lefties.

Mortensen isn't as exciting. He has a weird mix of pitches, not real breaking pitch, everything works back in towards righties, in varying degrees. Red is for his splitter.

Mortensen got killed on his splitter, his fastball was below average and the change-up was OK. I'd like to see him come back if only to get another look at the "splitter". Ni has three solid pitches, and has been successful with each (although he's given up a home run off his fastball). He's picked up ground balls on 58% of balls in play, against just 8% line drives. That's a good start, we'll see how it goes from there.

Do we blame this one on the schedule? Were the Detroit Tigers a bit lethargic, playing on west coast time? Most of us watching in the eastern time zone were feeling kind of groggy by 10 p.m., so maybe the Tigers were dragging, too.

The lineup certainly appeared to be in a daze, racking up 14 strikeouts against four A's pitchers and only managing six hits for the night. Curtis Granderson went 0-for-5. Placido Polanco, 0-for-4. Ryan Raburn also went 0-for-4, with three strikeouts. (Does "taking the collar" refer to going hitless, or to striking out in all of your at-bats? I thought it referred to the strikeouts, but can't remember for sure.)

Once again, Tigers batters made a mediocre pitcher look good (a troubling pattern we touched on in a Q&A with Athletics Nation yesterday). And they hammered Brett Anderson back in May at Comerica Park. What was the difference this time? Anderson's eight days of rest? Maturity as a pitcher? Did the Tigers have a poor approach at the plate? All of the above?

Rick Porcello didn't seem particularly awake, either, as he pitched one of his worst games of his rookie season. He allowed nine hits, his highest total since his first major league start, and lasted just 4.1 innings, the second shortest outing of his 15 appearances this year.

It's also notable that Porcello didn't strike out any batters for the first time this season. Perhaps that's not a big deal since he's not truly a strikeout pitcher, and has had quite a few starts in which he only notched two or three strikeouts. But it might also indicate that he fooling many Oakland batters, either.

With a full night to adjust to west coast time, perhaps the Tigers will show up with a better effort Tuesday night. Or does the clock change tend to weigh more heavily on the second day in different time zones? We'll find out soon enough.

Purr:

Can we give the Roar to Luke Hochevar and the Kansas City Royals, for beating the Twins and helping Detroit maintain its four-game lead in the AL Central? Okay, we'll keep it Tigers-centric, but only with a Purr.

Maybe the most intriguing aspect of last night's game was the debut of Taiwanese reliever Fu-Te Ni. Yes, he served up a bazooka shot of a home run to Ryan Sweeney. And that was kind of a surprise, since he's a left-hander. But lefty hitters tend to like those pitches down-and-in, and that's exactly where Ni put a fastball. Other than that, however, Ni looked like someone who could be a valuable weapon out of the bullpen against left-handed hitters. He struck out three batters (including Jason Giambi and Jack Cust) in 1.2 innings and didn't walk anyone. Mixing a four-seam fastball with a slider and change-up, Ni threw 21 of 27 pitches for strikes.

Lunchtime Prowl: The Fu-Te Ni Mixtape, All-Star Picks, Same Ol' Maggs, and Bobby Seay's Holds

Mack Avenue Tigers has more on Detroit's newest reliever, Fu-Te Ni, including a video clip "mixtape" that gives you a look at his sidearm-type delivery. It looks similar to Clay Rapada's to me, but if Ni has better control than Rapada, that obviously works in his favor. I'm very curious to see how he'll perform against the likes of Jack Cust and Jason Giambi, and Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer after that.

(On a personal note, my mother has been asking me for years, "Why don't the Tigers have any Asian ballplayers?" I mention Hideo Nomo and Masao Kida, but those names do nothing for her. Now, finally, Fu-Te Ni has settled this particular issue within Team Casselberry. I just hope Mom stays up to watch these games in Oakland. [She won't.])

Adam Everett is among Jon Heyman's list of the best free agent signings. Kerry Wood is on the "worst" list, which might mean that the Tigers dodged a bullet in losing out on him this winter.

Heyman also praises two of the moves Dave Dombrowski made in the offseason, both of which have been significant additions to the Tigers' starting rotation.

Meanwhile, Ken Rosenthal has quite a different take on the All-Star rosters, and gives the Tigers just their one obligatory representative.

Fire Jim Leyland checks out Alfredo Figaro's two starts through Pitch F/X, and finds that Jim Leyland's assertion that Figaro wasn't pitching aggressively was pretty spot-on. (Differences between Comerica Park and Minute Maid Park should be taken into consideration, however.)

FJL also takes a look at Luke French's pitching repertoire, and seems less than impressed.

Bobby Seay's been doing a good job out of the Tigers' bullpen, and rightfully gets a feature from Jason Beck on tigers.com. It's all about the slider. But I wasn't aware Seay currently leads the majors in holds with 16. Were you paying closer attention?

The Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers has had enough of Carlos Zambrano, and wonders if the Cubs feel the same way. Would you like to see the Tigers get into that business or is a potential head case the last thing Detroit's pitching staff needs? (Thanks to Zappatista for passing this along.)

Lynn Henning has seen what I think many of us have also perceived since Magglio Ordonez returned from his "indefinite" hiatus: Nothing has really changed. (Here are the cold numbers.) Maggs still isn't driving the ball, and that home run last Thursday was due more to a terrible pitch by Ted Lilly than any adjustment made by Ordonez.

Remember Yorman Bazardo? Pitched in 14 games for the Tigers between 2007 and 2008? (I miss him, because I no longer have a reason to post my Bizarro picture whenever he pitches.) FanGraphs wonders why he's been in four organizations over the past four seasons.

We can't really blame Armando Galarraga's struggles on the World Baseball Classic, can we? Nevertheless, MLB Daily Dish lists a number of pitchers who have performed poorly this season, and each of them have something in common.

Fu-Te Ni to Join the Tigers This Week?

Could there be a new arrival from Triple-A Toledo in the Detroit Tigers' bullpen this week? Perhaps a Taiwanese import?

According to the East Windup Chronicle, reliever Fu-Te Ni will be called up by the Tigers. The report by Jackson Broder (who's also an international scout for the Minnesota Twins) says Ni will join Detroit's major league roster "early this week," which should mean that he'll join the Tigers during their series in Oakland.

This season with the Mud Hens, the left-handed Ni has pitched in 24 games, compiling a 3-0 record and 2.60 ERA, with 32 strikeouts (versus nine walks) in 34.1 innings.

It's something of a curious move for the Tigers, given that they already had the opportunity to call Ni up when they sent Ryan Perry down to Toledo, yet opted instead for Freddy Dolsi. Is this an indication Detroit is already having second thoughts about the move? Or might Ni give the bullpen another situational left-hander, a role that Nate Robertson has shown no capability of filling in his recent appearances?

Maybe we'll find out after today's game.

Morning Prowl: Perry's Replacement, Refusing Assignments, Boras Backpedals, and More Pedro Talk

With Ryan Perry being sent down to Toledo following yesterday's game (and five runs allowed in his last 4.1 innings, along with eight hits and two walks), both Mack Avenue Tigers and The Spot Starters list the potential replacements that could be added to the major league roster.

I'm going to guess it will be Fu-Te Ni, though I agree with Kurt that Casey Fien might be the more intriguing option. The lefty Ni has a 3-0 record and 2.61 ERA, with 30 strikeouts in 31 innings. Fien is 2-1 with a 4.68 ERA, and 31 strikeouts in 31 innings.

Jim Leyland announced that he'll put Alfredo Figaro in between Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson in the Tigers' starting rotation, in an attempt to reduce the burden on the bullpen when Detroit's two studs aren't pitching (and going deep into the ballgame).

Eddie at Detroit Tigers Thoughts looks to baseball's collective bargaining agreement to clarify the rules regarding a player refusing assignment to the minors. So if you're wondering why the Tigers don't just send Nate Robertson to Toledo, it's possible that they've already tried, but Robertson refused the assignment and is allowed to stay on the major league roster.

After Leyland and Scott Boras exchanged criticisms through the press this weekend over Magglio Ordonez's ~~benching~~ hiatus (the blow-by-blow of which was detailed well by The Detroit Tigers Weblog), Boras told Jason Beck that his remarks were in reference to Maggs' contract situation, not how much he should play.

Baseball Prospectus's Joe Sheehan thinks the Tigers should get into the Pedro Martinez business. And not just to be the team's fourth starter, but to eat up some of the innings that will likely be taken away from Rick Porcello later in the season.
