Two national cable games highlight today's TV schedule. All times Eastern.

1 p.m., FSN Wisconsin, SNY: Brewers at Mets. A Milwaukee win, followed by a St. Louis loss tonight, would give the Brewers a 9.5 game lead in the NL Central.

2 p.m., TBS, YES Network, FSN North: Yankees at Twins. The Twins beat the Yankees on Saturday, but New York held the lead in the AL East because the Red Sox lost to the Royals.

2 p.m., FSN Detroit, STO: Indians at Tigers. Detroit goes for the sweep behind Rick Porcello. Ubaldo Jimenez goes for Cleveland.

2 p.m., FSN Southwest, CSN Chicago: Rangers at White Sox. The Rangers' loss Saturday night allowed the Angels to creep to within five games of the AL West lead. Today, Derek Holland pitches against Gavin Floyd.

8 p.m., ESPN: Cardinals at Cubs. This matchup likely looked better when it was selected by the Worldwide Leader a few weeks ago. Instead, if the Cubs win, it could send the Cardinals into a tailspin. Also, if you are in Chicago and a determined baseball fan, you could attend two games on Sunday.

2 p.m., FSN Midwest, FSN Wisconsin: Cardinals at Brewers. Last night's incident involving Yadier Molina may not have a resolution (regarding possible suspension) by game time this afternoon. Will Yadi play? What will the Brewers do? There's bad blood between these two clubs.

3:45 p.m., FSN Arizona, CSN Bay Area: Diamondbacks at Giants. The winner of this game will be in sole possession of first place in the NL West. The loser starts looking at the wild-card standings.

7 p.m., NESN, STO: Indians at Red Sox. The rapidly fading Tribe -- three games out of first place -- tries to make up ground. Carlos Carrasco pitches against Tim Wakefield.

8 p.m., ESPN, YES Network, CSN Chicago: Yankees at White Sox. The White Sox, after reaching the .500 mark, have lost four straight. They'll try to beat the Yankees tonight and avoid getting swept, behind Gavin Floyd. A.J. Burnett goes for New York.

Chicago White Sox May Still Want Freddy Garcia, But He May Not Want Them

Right-handed pitcher Freddy Garcia has quite a history with the Chicago White Sox. He was, of course, a shining spoke in the speeding wheel that was the Sox 2005 starting rotation. It was a staff that rolled through the postseason that year, throwing complete game after complete game, on its way to winning the World Series.

Garcia is also a prodigal son of sorts. After being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2006 for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez, and pitching (sparsely and not particularly well) for the Phillies and then the Detroit Tigers, he returned to the South Side on a free agent deal in June of 2009. Garcia went on to win back the confidence and support of many Sox fans in 2010 as he battled his way through the season -- a solid, resilient fifth starter.

So are the Sox ready for more Freddy? That's the question on many minds at the moment. General manager Kenny Williams is certainly interested in Garcia. "He is one of my favorite competitors I've ever run across in athletic life," Williams told mlb.com this week. But whether a deal is even on the table is hard to say at this point. "I wouldn't describe it as a formal offer," said Williams regarding communications between the two parties, "And I wouldn't describe it as a formal rejection."

But news hit today that, though Freddy apparently wants to wear the black and white, it's probably not exactly the kind you're envisioning.

According to a translation provided by MLB Trade Rumors, Garcia told the Venezuelan news site Meridiano:

My preference is to be with the New York Yankees, and it's not unreasonable to have that in mind, because I've demonstrated that I can be useful. A team like New York would be ideal for my age, [as would ] playing in a successful, media-heavy, demanding division. Without doubt it would be an inspiration.

Whoa, whoa, whoa ... Freddy, dude. Granted, the Yankees do appear to be desperately looking for arms to fill out their rotation as the "Andy Pettitte Retirement Watch" drifts into Brett Favre waters and we all snicker over the minor league deal handed to 37-year-old (and former White Sox, however briefly) Bartolo Colon. But you want successful? The White Sox are, arguably, the prohibitive favorites in the AL Central this season. You want media-heavy? This is Chicago. Gotcha covered. You want demanding? Hey, the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers are certainly still in play. It's unlikely 2011 will be a cake walk.

Naturally, Garcia could simply and rather wisely be driving up his own contract price. It would certainly benefit his wallet if the Sox and Yanks got into a bidding war over his services. And, given Freddy's long-standing relationship with Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and his familiarity with the team, he must presumably know how easy it would be to get a deal done.

Then again, Garcia must also know that the White Sox don't really need a fifth starter long-term. As soon as Jake Peavy is ready to pitch, whoever is standing in that No. 5 spot will be bounced to the pen. So maybe a deal with the Yankees would make more sense for Freddy after all, assuming he wants to remain a starter throughout the season.

There's also the hanging question as to whether the Sox will give top prospect Chris Sale a rotation spot for a month or so then shift him back to the pen when Peavy is ready. That's what Kenny Williams seems to think might happen, anyway. He told the Sun-Times last weekend, "My feeling is [Sale] will ultimately be in the bullpen because we won’t have that need [to start] for no longer than 30 days if we have it at all." Williams did say, however, that Sale will continue to prepare as a starter, not a reliever.

So the fifth starter saga soldiers on for Sox fans -- with a decidedly New York twist coming today by way of Caracas.

White Sox Likely To Start Season Without Peavy

The Chicago White Sox played about half of the 2010 season without their No. 1 starting pitcher, Jake Peavy. And, by the looks of things, they'll be continuing that trend for a while longer in 2011.

At yesterday's general manager meetings in Orlando, Fla., White Sox GM Kenny Williams said, "I'm not looking [for Peavy to return in] April in my mind, but he may surprise me." ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine went a step further, citing an unnamed MLB source as saying, "It may be as late as June before Peavy is ready to return from an injury few baseball players have suffered." That injury would be a detached latissimus dorsi muscle underneath Peavy's right shoulder.

Interestingly, Williams also said the team has six starters and that he's considering adding another. Levine presumes those six to be: 1) Mark Buehrle, 2) John Danks, 3) Gavin Floyd, 4) Edwin Jackson, 5) Tony Pena, and 6) Chris Sale. Pena would seem the most likely candidate to assume the fifth starter's role while Peavy is out. He did start three games for the Sox this past season and certainly fits the ground-ball-guy, innings-eater profile. But what if Chris Sale gets a shot?

Granted, right now, that appears unlikely. Pitching coach Don Cooper was quoted just last week as saying he'd "have to hear the reasons" to give Sale, who will be barely 22 years old on Opening Day, a month of starts. "I don't think a kid like this needs to be bounced around," said the Coop. "I like him in the bullpen for the 2011 season,"

But let's say Cooper changes his mind and the youngster gets a month -- or even two months -- of starts. And let's say he really succeeds. The Sox could then face a difficult choice when Peavy returns. Presumably, they'd have to bounce one of their starters (likely Floyd or Jackson) to the pen. A nice problem to have but an awkward one nonetheless, especially if both are pitching well.

The truth is, it's still a little early in the off-season to get too worried about any of this. Kenny Williams is no stranger to bold moves (Alex Rios, Manny Ramirez), and he may open a spot in the rotation for Sale with a trade (Floyd's name has already come up) or even anoint the young lefty closer if Bobby Jenks is nontendered as many expect and the team fails to sign one. But we'll be interested to see how the Sox pitching staff shapes up as the off-season moves along.
