My Favorite Chipper Jones Things, Vol. 1

Chipper Jones will play the final regular season home stand of his illustrious career this week at Turner Field. The Braves still have their eyes on one final run in October, but as Chipper's ceremony nears on Friday night, it seemed like a good time to begin reflecting on old No. 10's career.

In the first installment of 'My Favorite Chipper Jones Things', we take a look at his historic triple-slash batting line.

With nine games remaining in his career, Jones is batting .304/.401/.530. Unless he completely falls off a cliff this next week -- and I mean he'd basically have to go hitless without reaching base more than a handful of times -- Chipper will retire with a triple-slash line upwards of .300/.400/.500.

That line is pretty historic in baseball history. Having a career .300 batting average is incredible enough, but to continually hit at that level while drawing walks and hitting for power is the true definition of a Hall of Fame hitter.

To give you a comparison of a modern-day player, Alex Rodriguez has a career line of .300/.384/.551 and is yet to hit the steep decline that is inevitable as he ages. Derek Jeter is at .313/.382/.448.

Mike Schmidt, who many believe is one of the best third basemen of all time, has a career line of .267/.380/.527. Dale Murphy hit .265/.346/.469.

Baseball's home run king, Hank Aaron, batted .305/.374/.555 throughout his incredible career.

This is not to say any of these players are better or worse than Jones is or was. They all had fine careers, and they'll be remembered for the many special things they accomplished over the years. But just the fact that none of these all-time greats could achieve the 3/4/5 line is a testament to just how great our third baseman is.

We're going to miss you, Chipper.

The Mets Gave Chipper Jones Something Pretty Cool

As Chipper Jones makes his final trip to New York this weekend to take on the Mets, there will be plenty of time for reflection and appreciation. Despite Chipper tormenting the Mets and their fans for years with his late-inning heroics, the franchise gave him a pretty awesome gift during his press conference prior to Friday's game.

Pretty awesome if you ask me.

ANIMATED: Chipper Jones Hits 2 Home Runs For Braves

It was a big night for Chipper Jones yesterday. Its not every night that you get your own bobblehead, so Jones had to make sure that every single one of the 33,157 people who showed up at Turner Field went home happy.

So Jones went ahead and hit two home runs against the San Diego Padres last night, including this two-run home run that traveled 428 feet over the right field wall that set the tone in Atlanta's 6-0 win on Thursday night.

Jones also sent one over the center field wall in the fifth inning and recorded the 2700th hit in his soon to be hall of fame career. Not to mention

While there are a ton of things that you could say about his performance, I think Talking Chop said it best in their postgame recap last night,

Every day should be Chipper Jones Bobblehead Day.

Chipper Jones Retirement: Yes, Chipper Jones Is Still Going To Retire, Per Chipper

Chipper Jones is just having another typical Chipper Jones like season. The man is leading the Braves in batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.394) and slugging percentage (.513). He's still flashing that premium glove, he's still the clubhouse leader, and he's still the greybeard of the roster whose imminent retirement is still on the horizon a few months away.

Chipper's unfortunately not Brett Favre, and I can't decide if this is a good or a bad thing.

Courtesy of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chipper's definitely still retiring at the end of the season.

"I thought I was fully capable of doing what I'm doing. In fact, I told my agent [B.B. Abbott] in spring training. He told me, ‘You can't back-track on this [retirement decision]. If you've got 20 homers and you're hitting .300 and you've got 80 or 90 RBIs, you can't second-guess yourself.' And I said, well, I'm going to have those numbers, and I'm ready to leave. I'm ready to move on." -- Chipper Jones

Well alright then.

As far as I'm concerned, Larry Wayne Jones should be allowed to put on the Braves uniform for so long as he lives. Or until he can't hit .200 anymore. I don't know if I'd ever feel great about Chipper going Brett Favre on us with his teetering retirement, but I'm still not ready for him to not be a Brave.

Dammit, I want my Chipper and I need it now! Cue up my J.G. Wentworth commercial.

Chipper Jones Setting Records In Final Season With Braves

Chipper Jones has done it all in his career with the Braves. He's won a World Series, claimed a National League MVP trophy, has played in every ballpark, should be a first ballot hall of famer, etc. etc. We could go on about our wonderful third baseman all day long.

On Sunday against the Phillies, Chipper Jones moved into second place in a pretty impressive category with a deep homer off Roy Halladay. We'll investigate after the jump.

Not too bad for a day's work.

For all Chipper has accomplished over the years, his production at the age of 40 is just absolutely unreal. He's been the Braves' best and most consistent player all season long; when was the last time any team could say that about a man who's been in baseball for nearly two decades?

Chipper Jones Joins Twitter

In this age of fake Twitter accounts, it's understandable that any athlete account without the "verified" checkmark can be questioned. But the Braves have confirmed that the account @RealCJ10 is the real chipper Jones.

In just over nine hours, Jones has tweeted three times and picked up more than 40,000 followers.
