Baltimore Orioles

64 - 98

Toronto Blue Jays (75-84) at Baltimore Orioles (61-98), 7:05 p.m.

Sports Network | October 2, 2009

(Sports Network) - Rookie right-hander Jason Berken tries to kick off, of all things, a winning streak for the Baltimore Orioles tonight when they return home to Camden Yards to begin a three-game season-ending series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Losers of 13 straight games heading into Thursday, the Orioles ended the skid with a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, avoiding equaling Arizona's 14-game slide in 2004 as the worst stretch in recent major-league history.

Jeff Fiorentino's RBI single in the fourth inning proved to be the difference, as the Orioles survived a stressful ninth inning. Cesar Izturis had two hits and scored a run for the Orioles, who last found the win column on September 16 against these same Rays.

Chris Waters (1-0), making his first start of the season, gave up a run on two hits and walked three over five innings to get the win.

Berken, a sixth-round draft pick in 2006, last won on September 15 against the Rays, when he allowed seven hits and five runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 10-5 triumph.

He's picked a loss and a no-decision since, surrendering 18 hits and 10 runs in just 6 2/3 innings against Boston and Cleveland.

The 25-year-old Green Bay, Wisconsin native has faced the Blue Jays three times in his first season, including a 7-5 decision in their last meeting on August 7 in Toronto.

In three starts, he's 2-1 with a 3.78 earned run average in 16 2/3 innings.

He's 3-7 in 13 home starts and the Orioles are 6-17 in games he's pitched.

For Toronto, former first-round draft choice David Purcey tries to defeat the Orioles for the second time in two weeks.

He earned a 9-2 decision on September 21 in Toronto, allowing four hits and a run in 7 2/3 innings.

The 27-year-old Illinois native was the 16th overall draft pick in and debuted in the majors last season with three wins in 12 starts.

Purcey started five times for Toronto in April this year, then returned to the staff against Detroit on September 14.

In 44 1/3 innings this season, he's allowed 46 hits and 28 runs.

The Blue Jays are 4-4 in games he's pitched.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday in Boston, Jose Bautista homered and knocked in three runs and Roy Halladay turned in nine scoreless innings as Toronto crushed Boston, 12-0, in the finale of a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Halladay (17-10) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and wound up yielding three hits while fanning six and walking two for his second consecutive complete-game victory.

Randy Ruiz finished with four hits including a home run, two RBI and scored four times while Lyle Overbay hit a two-run homer and knocked in three for the Blue Jays, who swept the series and have reeled of nine wins in their last 10 games.

Aaron Hill and John McDonald also knocked in a pair each for Toronto, which rapped out 17 hits.

Toronto is 9-6 against the O's this season.
