Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Boston third baseman Mike Lowell was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday.
Lowell has been sidelined with a strained right hip since last Thursday.
To take his spot on the roster, the team recalled first baseman/outfielder Jeff Bailey from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Lowell, who underwent offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, had 15 CCs of fluid removed from that joint on Monday and also received an injection of Synvisc.
Over 68 games on the season, he is batting .282 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI.
Bailey, 30, starts his second stint of the season with the Red Sox. During his first stint of the season with Boston, he hit .188 in 23 games.
