Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Mark Buehrle threw his second scoreless outing since his perfect game, as the Chicago White Sox earned a split of s doubleheader with a 1-0 victory over Cleveland at Progressive Field.
In the first game, Fausto Carmona pitched seven innings and allowed only one run, and the Indians won, 5-1, just after manager Eric Wedge was informed he would not be returning for the 2010 season.
Dewayne Wise doubled and scored the game's only run, as the White Sox won for the third time in four games. Buehrle (13-10) allowed only three hits and fanned three without allowing a walk in six frames. He had been 1-7 since throwing his perfect game on July 23.
"Buehrle was out there for a couple of innings to make sure we didn't overuse anybody else," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "He did a good job. Next year we might keep him in there. He felt better today."
Buehrle is known for pitching quickly, and this contest took only two hours and two minutes. The two games were completed in 4:19.
Justin Masterson (4-10) pitched his first career complete game for Cleveland but was dealt the hard-luck loss. The righty allowed one run on four hits with two walks and a career-high 12 strikeouts. The Indians finished their home schedule with a 35-46 record.
"You see him pitch a game like today and I think that answers a lot of questions with people in regards to why we feel like he can start," said Wedge. "We've seen spurts of it, but today he really put it together."
Both pitchers worked effectively and quickly, getting through the first five innings without allowing a run.
The White Sox, though, broke through in the sixth, as Wise led off with a double to center, went to third on Mark Kotsay's groundout and scored on Paul Konerko's two-out single.
Buehrle threw a perfect bottom of the sixth to finish off his sterling outing, and Tony Pena followed with two scoreless innings of relief.
Matt Thornton set down the Tribe in order in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Masterson's previous career-high in strikeouts was nine. He threw 109 pitches -- 80 for strikes...Buehrle improved to 11-14 lifetime against the Indians...No batter had multiple hits in the game, as the teams combined for eight...The Indians went down in order six times in the game, while the White Sox did it five times.
