Recap: San Francisco vs. Florida

Sports Network | July 8, 2009

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Volstad retired the final 11 batters he faced to record the first complete game of his career, as the Florida Marlins rolled past the San Francisco Giants, 7-0, in the finale of a three-game set.

Volstad (6-8) gave up just five hits and fanned six batters to get the much- needed win, as he was 1-5 with a 6.75 earned run average over his past seven starts, and lasted just three innings in a 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday. The righty also scored twice in the win.

Dan Uggla had a three-run homer for the Marlins, who salvaged the finale of this series. Emilio Bonifacio and Jorge Cantu both had two hits, an RBI and scored at least once. John Baker went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the win.

Rookie Ryan Sadowski (2-1) took the loss after giving up three runs -- two earned -- on five hits in five-plus innings for the Giants, who are 4-2 over their last six games. He hadn't allowed a run in his two previous starts since being called up in late June.

Florida broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Cantu singled with one out and Jeremy Hermida followed with a double before Cody Ross was caught looking at the third strike. Baker then singled to left which allowed Cantu to score, however, Hermida was gunned down trying to score as Randy Winn's throw was on point to end the inning.

The Fish tacked on another run in the fifth. Volstad walked with one out and Chris Coghlan followed with a single to make it first and third. Bonifacio then offered a sac fly to center to make it 2-0.

Hermida led off the sixth by reaching first on Pablo Sandoval's throwing error. Ross was then hit by a pitch and Justin Miller was called on in relief. Baker singled to load the bases before Wes Helms grounded into a run-scoring double play to make it 3-0.

Bonifacio had a one-out double in the seventh and came around to score two batters later as Cantu singled to left, which made it a four-run affair. Then, Uggla stroked a three-run homer off Merkin Valdez in the ninth to account for the final margin.
