Recap: Philadelphia vs. Cincinnati

Sports Network | July 8, 2009

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Shane Victorino singled in the game- winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Reds at Citizens Bank Park.

Victorino filled the box score with two hits, a run scored, a walk and two stolen bases, carrying Philadelphia to its fifth win in six games. Jayson Werth added a solo home run, while Ryan Madson (3-4) was credited with the win after hurling two scoreless innings of relief.

Phillies starter Rodrigo Lopez exited after five innings with inflammation in his shoulder. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Laynce Nix and Ramon Hernandez each drove in a run for Cincinnati, which lost two of three in the series, including a franchise-worst 22-1 defeat on Monday.

David Weathers (1-2) took the loss behind Homer Bailey, who scattered seven hits and two runs while fanning six and walking none in a six-inning start.

Pedro Feliz led off the home ninth with a single, and Weathers retired the next two hitters before Jimmy Rollins worked a walk. Victorino stepped in and his inside-out swing resulted in a bloop into left-center, allowing Feliz to score the game-winner without a play at the plate.

Lopez faced one over the minimum through three frames but allowed the first four hitters to reach base in the fourth. Jerry Hairston Jr. and Joey Votto both singled and Brandon Phillips worked a walk to fill the bases.

Nix singled to right to knock in a run, and Hernandez added a sacrifice fly before Jay Bruce grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Ryan Howard cut into Philly's deficit in the bottom half by singling in Victorino, who led off the inning with a base hit.

Werth's two-out, solo shot to right-center tied the game in the sixth.

Bailey was 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in two previous appearances against the Phils, who left nine men on base...Philadelphia has won eight of the last 11 meetings between the teams...Greg Dobbs had two hits for the Phillies, whose relievers allowed one hit with five strikeouts and no walks in four innings of work.
