The Pirates scored the game's only runs in the first inning. Andrew McCutchen walked leading off, and Garrett Jones drew a one-out walk. Lastings Milledge's single loaded the bases for Steve Pearce, who grounded into an RBI fielder's choice.

Jaramillo then drove in two runs with a double to left, and Brian Bixler capped the frame with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
