Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Charlie Morton pitched a four-hitter for his first career shutout, and the Pirates took the first game of a doubleheader against the Cubs, 4-0, at Wrigley Field.
Morton (5-9) walked three and struck out eight, as he went nine innings for the first time in his career, spanning 33 starts in two seasons. Jason Jaramillo had a two-run double in a four-run first for the Pirates, who have won four of six after winning just three games in their previous 26.
Ryan Theriot had three of the Cubs' hits a day after Chicago was eliminated from playoff contention. Ted Lilly (12-9) alllowed four runs and five hits while fanning eight in seven innings to take the loss.
The Pirates scored the game's only runs in the first inning. Andrew McCutchen walked leading off, and Garrett Jones drew a one-out walk. Lastings Milledge's single loaded the bases for Steve Pearce, who grounded into an RBI fielder's choice.
Jaramillo then drove in two runs with a double to left, and Brian Bixler capped the frame with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
Morton didn't allow a hit until the third and never allowed a runner to advance past second base. After the first inning, the Pirates had only one player reach third base.
Chicago has still dominated the season series, 10-3...Bixler recorded his first stolen base of the season...Milledge had two hits for Pittsburgh.
