Recap: Colorado vs. Washington

Sports Network | July 8, 2009

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Troy Tulowitzki finished 3-for-4 with a two- run home run and two runs scored as Colorado routed Washington, 10-4, in the finale of a three-game set from Coors Field.

Ryan Spilborghs added a three-run triple and for the Rockies, who swept the series. Dexter Fowler and Todd Helton each collected two hits, an RBI and also scored twice, while Carlos Gonzalez had three hits, knocked in a run and scored once.

Jorge De La Rosa (6-7) worked 6 1/3 innings for the win, allowing five hits and three runs with five strikeouts and three walks.

Anderson Hernandez drove in a pair of runs and Nyjer Morgan went 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Nationals, losers in seven of their last nine.

Ross Detwiler (0-5) was charged in defeat for eight hits and six runs over four-plus innings.

Already ahead by two, the Rockies came up with four more runs in the fifth to chase Washington's starter. Helton and Garrett Atkins both singled and Tulowitzki walked to load the bases. Spilborghs brought them all in with a triple, then Tyler Clippard entered the game only to allow Yorvit Torrealba's two-bagger for a 6-0 game.

Tulowitzki added a two-run blast in the sixth for an eight-run bulge, and the Nats didn't respond until the seventh, putting up three runs on a Hernandez two-run single and a Wil Nieves sacrifice fly.

Clint Barmes doubled home Fowler in the home half to make it 9-3, and Ryan Zimmerman's ground out in the eighth scored Morgan for a five-run contest.

Colorado hit double digits in the home half. Tulowitzki singled but was erased on Torrealba's fielder's choice. Gonzalez followed with a triple to deep center which brought in the Rockies' catcher and it was 10-4.

Matt Daley nailed down the win by retiring the Nationals in order in the ninth.

Helton's RBI double in the third staked the Rox to an early lead, and Colorado tacked on one more in its next at-bat as Gonzalez stroked a one-out double and Fowler drove him in with a ground-rule double to center.

Colorado has won six straight over Washington and seven of nine dating back to last August...Detwiler has failed to record a victory in any of his 10 starts this season and is winless over 11 career appearances...Three Washington relievers combined to allow four runs on six hits over the final five frames, while Colorado's bullpen held the Nats to one run and two hits with four strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings.
