By almost any standard, this has been a rather disastrous season for the Portland Timbers. Jack Jewsbury salvaged at least some amount of pride for them, though, as his 17th minute strike handed the Timbers a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps and won them the Cascadia Cup.
The Timbers, who twice had chances to clinch the rivalry trophy in earlier games against the Seattle Sounders, needed a win in this game in order to win the three-way competition. It also means they avoided the ignominy of failing to win a single game on the road this year.
The Whitecaps had been eliminated from that competition for awhile, but needed a result in order to bolster their playoff hopes. Pending the result of the Sounders-FC Dallas game later in the day, they could find themselves tied for the final playoff spot heading into the last week of the season. The Whitecaps play Real Salt Lake, while FC Dallas has a game against Chivas USA.
