For all his ability to come up with big saves, Josh Saunders is showcasing why he gives fans heart-attacks on a regular basis.
The 2012 MLS Cup final is just about five minutes old, but Josh Saunders is already giving LA Galaxy fans heart-attacks. The goalkeeper has touched the ball three times and each time he has made the play look for more difficult than he needed to.
The worst moment came when he tried to clear a ball out at his feet. Despite being under no pressure, Saunders punted the ball no farther than the edge of the penalty area where it hit off a Houston Dynamo attacker. Luckily for Saunders and the Galaxy, nothing came of the gaffe.
But it's that kind of play that has become a fixture of Saunders' play. The 31-year-old spent much of his early career bouncing between MLS and various lower-division sides, mostly because he's such a disaster coming off his line. Even when he's playing well, which is admittedly with alarming regularity, it's almost entirely a result of impressive shot-stopping rather than his other abilities.
If the Galaxy fail to win this game, you can almost guarantee it will be a result of something Saunders did wrong.
