Chivas USA's terrible season continues and this time it was Alvaro Saborio who tormented them, scoring a hat trick in Salt Lake's 4-0 win.
Real Salt Lake are good. Chivas USA are not. Saturday night was an exhibition of these two facts.
As RSL knocked the ball around, dictated play and showed strength from the back, all the way to the front, the Goats couldn't do much of anything anywhere on the field. That made Alvaro Saborio all too happy and he took advantage, netting a hat trick to lead RSL to a 4-0 win at the Home Depot Center.
It took all of eight minutes for Salt Lake and Saborio to make their superiority show on the scoreboard. Fabian Espindola started the play with a cross from the right that found Javier Morales, who flicked the ball to the back post. Saborio had completely lost his marker and was all alone at the back post then, waiting to tap the ball into the open net for the opening tally.
Three minutes later, Saborio made it two and it was just as easy. Dan Kennedy attempted to roll their ball out to John Alexander Valencia, only it never made it to its intended target. It was a poor decision by Kennedy and allowed Espindola to pick off the pass before crossing for another Saborio tap-in.
Chivas was able to keep the scoreline at 2-0 until the 65th minute, but the defense broke down again. One more time, Saborio was able to take advantage, this time with a difficult and pretty finish. After Kennedy came off his line to make a good save on Will Johnson, the ball bounced out to Saborio. He took the ball to the edge of the box, turned around and then chipped over Kennedy, who was rushing back to his line. But Kennedy had no chance to stop the gorgeous Saborio chip, which caught the underside of the crossbar and found the net to complete his hat trick.
Paulo Jr. wrapped things up with a powerful finish in the 81st minute. A good Espindola pass freed him and he made not mistake with his finish to seal a dominant RSL win.
RSL now sits in second place in the West, three points ahead of the Galaxy and Sounders, but both teams have a match in hand on Salt Lake.
