In the first fight of the UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez pay-per-view broadcast, Brendan Schaub was looking to take a step up in the heavyweight division by beating gatekeeper (and former title challenger) Gabriel Gonzaga. Schaub's speed was the deciding factor in the fight as he was able to routinely move inside, land punches and get back out without taking damage. Over the three rounds the best work done by Gonzaga was when he committed to leg kicks and forced Schaub to think twice about moving forward.
Unfortunately for Gonzaga, he did not remain committed to this strategy. Instead he attempted to counter Brendan as he came in. It was an unsuccessful strategy and one that led to a 30-27 loss on all three judges cards.
With the win Schaub joins top heavyweights like Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin as a man who has passed the Gonzaga test. We'll have to wait to see what they do with Schaub next.
