Fabricio Werdum's Tune-Up Fight Plan Causes Needless Worry By Fans

Sherdog caught up with Fabricio Werdum to talk about his next fight and what he has been doing since his defeat of heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko. This comment by Werdum has stirred up some controversy for some MMA fans:

"I used this trip to make a couple of good contacts in Abu Dhabi and Japan. Strikeforce want me to return in March against Fedor [Emelianenko] or [Alistair] Overeem, but I'm looking forward to having a fight before that one. I don’t have an exclusive contract with Strikeforce, only for the U.S., and I got a nice proposal in Abu Dhabi and another one in Japan... My arm is 100 percent now and I feel that by February, I'll be ready to fight in Abu Dhabi or Japan."

Some fans feel that this is somehow exposing the problem with Strikeforce's contracts being open for fighters to compete outside of the U.S. for other promotions. But, as long as Werdum is till ready for that huge fight in March, there really is no issue.

↵

He wants to go overseas and take a fight to make a little money and stay fresh? That's his right, and it's also a good thing. I don't want Werdum to be rusty when he steps in against the next huge test in his career. I don't want him to make $40,000 less this year because he doesn't take a "stay busy fight."

↵

And there should be no worries about him getting hurt. Werdum could just as easily get hurt training in the gym for the next 5 months. And the "what if he loses in Japan?!" talk should go out the window also. This is a sport, guys compete. The worry of a loss should not bother fans. Maybe it should bother Strikeforce, but it's their contract, they knew what could happen when it was written.

As fans we all seem to worry about business aspects far too much. Werdum wants to fight, I'd expect nothing less from a fighter.
