The UFC 124 PPV got off to a very fun start with the battle between hard hitting welterweights Thiago Alves and John Howard. Howard was game the entire three rounds, never stopping with the forward movement and aggression but his less technical strikes left him open to counters by the much more solid striker in Alves. It was an exciting three rounds but every minute was clearly won by Alves.
Alves worked a very simple game of hard leg kicks, counter punches and two punch combinations that kept Howard from getting comfortable. At multiple points in the fight Alves was able to stun Howard with hard punches but John showed great heart in getting up and going right back to his aggressive "come forward" style. Howard was also limping at several points in the bout as his leg was brutalized by hard kicks.
All three judges saw the bout a clean sweep, 30-27, for Alves and SB Nation saw the same.
With the fans voting for Fight of the Night tonight, it's got a very good chance of being this exciting slugfest.
