Frank Mir vs. Brendan Schaub In The Works For March UFC Event

MMA Junkie is reporting that a bout between Frank Mir and Brendan Schaub is in the works for a UFC event in March. The bout could take place at one of the two unannounced March events, either UFC on Versus 3 on March 3 or UFC 129 on March 19. According to the Junkie report verbal agreements are in place from both fighters.

Schaub was runner up on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter, losing in the finals to Roy Nelson by knockout. Since that time Schaub has improved exponentially in drubbings of Chase Gormley and Chris Tuchscherer and, most recently, a dominant win over Gabriel Gonzaga. Gonzaga's job for years now has been to serve as a gatekeeper to the "top level" of the UFC's heavyweight division and the win by Schaub was impressive enough to have earned him a shot like this against a former champion in Mir.

As for Mir, he has had an up and down few years. After being an afterthought in the fight world following a long recovery from a motorcycle injury Mir was announced as Brock Lesnar's first UFC opponent. Mir survived an early onslaught before locking Lesnar in a kneebar that ended the fight. Mir then became the first man to knock out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira before being trounced in his rematch with Lesnar at UFC 100. A rebound victory over mid-tier fighter Cheick Kongo was followed by yet another violent beating, this time by Shane Carwin. Then at UFC 119 Mir took on Mirko Filipovic in one of the worst main events in recent history. Mir and "Cro Cop" spent most of the fight not engaging and at times even talking and laughing before Mir landed a knee that knocked Mirko out with less than a minute left in the fight.

We will have more on the fight once it is officially announced.
