At UFC 125 we were promised once again that we'd see a new and improved version of Brandon Vera when he took on the very dangerous Thiago Silva. Vera was correct in that he was much more aggressive on the feet but he got taken down in every round and had no answer for the bigger, stronger Silva.
Thiago would get takedowns after early portions of the round where Vera looked good and then would unload with punches while establishing complete control. In the third round Silva took Vera down and had his back for almost the entire round. At one point he got frustrated that Vera was doing nothing but covering up so he began to slap the side of Vera's head before "playing the bongos" on his back. At some point during the flurry of actual punches in the round Vera's nose was BADLY broken.
The judges saw the fight 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27 all for Thiago Silva.
I don't see Vera keeping his spot in the UFC after this fight. He has constantly disappointed and showed so little when the fight wasn't going his way tonight that he is likely to find himself looking to get back on his feet in the regional circuit.
