I had the chance to talk to UFC light heavyweight contender Phil Davis yesterday. Davis, as most of you reading this already know, was the 2008 NCAA Division I national champion at Penn State at 197lbs. He's also undefeated in mixed martial arts, the UFC and has the fight of his life coming up at UFC Fight Night 24 on March 26 against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. This is the first fight where Davis will headline for the UFC and the first time he will compete on Spike TV.
But I wanted to get his thoughts on the national wrestling tournament first. We talked about what impact former national champion and Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson has as a coach for Nittany Lions, whether he cares about wrestling going head-to-head with college basketball in terms of getting media attraction and if he still has any relationship with the current squad for his alma mater. I also got his take on what kind of difference it will make for the wrestlers competing to not have this event held in the midwest.
