UFC Fight Night 24 Ratings Reaches 2.2 Million Viewer Average

The ratings are in for UFC Fight Night 24. The Spike TV special aired last Saturday and the results are actually pretty good. Notably, though, the peak ratings were for what would generally be considered the co-main event. Here's the Spike TV press release:

Spike TV's live UFC® Fight Night LiveTM on Saturday, March 26 at 10p.m.-12:13a.m. ET was the most watched program on cable for the entire day in Men 18-34 and Men 18-49. Peaking with 2.4 million viewers at 11:15 p.m. for the Dan Hardy-Anthony Johnson bout, the event was the most watched UFC Fight Night since September 2009.

Overall, UFC® Fight Night 24TM delivered a 2.2 rating in Men 18-49, a 2.30 in Men 18-34, a 1.5 household rating, and attracted an average audience of 2.2 million viewers.  Compared to last year, the fight improved the timeslot ratings by triple digits including 315% in M18-49, +318% in M18-34, and +128% in viewership.

Contrast that with UFC Fight Night 23 numbers:

This past weekend's "UFC Fight Night 23: UFC Fights for the Troops 2" event scored a 1.3 household rating and an average of 1.85 million viewers. The event also peaked with 2.5 million viewers.

And now with UFC Fight Night 22 numbers:

Wednesday's broadcast of "UFC Fight Night 22: Marquardt vs. Palhares" on Spike TV earned an average audience of 1.2 million viewers, station executives today announced.

The Sept. 15 broadcast peaked with 1.6 million viewers, who tuned in for Nate Marquardt's odd first-round stoppage of submission ace Rousimar Palhares.

...

The broadcast earned 1.2 rating among men ages 18-49, as well as a 1.1 rating among men ages 18-34.

Lastly, UFC Fight Night 21 ratings:

Wednesday's broadcast of UFC Fight Night 21 on Spike TV earned an avergae audience of 1.6 million viewers, station executives today announced.

The March 31 broadcast peaked with 2 million viewers, who tuned in for Kenny Florian's third-round submission win over Japanese import Takanori Gomi.

...

The broadcast was the No. 1 rated program in its timeslot among men 18-34 and men 18-49.

So, in the chain of UFC Fight Nights, this most-recent event did generally better. And compared to the abysmal ratings for the last live event, UFC on Verus 3, this did infinitely better.

I have to confess I wrongly pegged this event to do poorly. I don't know how poorly, exactly, but I did believe that trying to do this in close proximity to another UFC pay-per-view was going to spell trouble as getting media to follow along with that kind of turnaround was too difficult. But the Jones fight was as big as some had anticipated, so there wasn't a as much difficulty as I had expected among media and promotional outlets to spread the message.

And despite losing whatever's left of Tito Ortiz's star power, the event did well on it's own terms. Hardy is much more of a known commodity to fans than Phil Davis, so the ratings spike there isn't altogether unsurprising. I doubt Davis did much to up his stock to casual fans, but all things considered, this was a successful event.

UFC Fight Night 24 Results: Phil Davis Vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Round 1

The main event of UFC Fight Night 24 is Phil Davis vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Tito Ortiz was originally scheduled to face Nogueira, but was forced to withdraw due to injury. Most experts heading into this bout believe Davis could one day challenge Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight title. I certainly concur with that sentiment, but it should be noted Nogueira should provide a much tougher fight than most expect.

The referee in charge of this bout is

ROUND 1 - Nogueira comes out southpaw and Davis already feinting level changes while pawing distances. Two head kick attempts from Davis and the second land. The third does, too. Takedown attempt from Davis initally stuffed and he abandons the effort. Davis times a nice shot under a straight right from Nogueira, but is rebuffed. UFC Fight Night 24 Results: Johny Hendricks Knocks Out T.J. Waldburger In Round One

The third fight of UFC Fight Night 24 is Johny Hendricks vs. T.J. Waldburger, a welterweight bout and the final unaired preliminary match. Waldburger was returning to UFC action after a decision win in his UFC debut. Hendricks is trying to rebound after a thorough defeat at the hands of Rick Story.

There wasn't much to this one. Hendricks ended it early and with potential Knockout of the Night honors awaiting him at the event's conclusion.

At the beginning of the round Waldburger threw a kick and Hendricks timed it with excellent precision. The hard shot dropped Waldburger to the canvas and the referee stopped the fight immediately.

Hendricks still has a ton of hype to live up to, but this clearly separates him from the UFC welterweights who struggle for roster spots. It's also further evidence that he has striking power to compliment his considerable wrestling game.

UFC Fight Night 24 results: Johny Hendricks def. T.J. Waldburger via TKO (punches) at 1:35 of round 1.

UFC Fight Night 24 Results: Aaron Simpson Mario Miranda

The second fight at UFC Fight Night 24 is a middleweight tilt between Aaron Simpson and Mario Miranda. Simpson was hoping to rebound after a loss to Chris Leben as well as Mark Munoz. Miranda was hoping to have a better showing than he did against Demian Maia.

The story of this fight turned out to be the wrestling of Aaron Simpson. Coincidentally, this is precisely how Maia was able to avoid the considerable stand-up skills of Miranda as well. In Simpson's case, the former Division I wrestler was able to take down Miranda at will. He even scored a questionable spike in the second.

The third was more of the same. Simpson's superior wrestling and clinch wrestling paved the way for a workmanlike win. It was a dominating performance and given the strong liabilities of Miranda when it comes to the ground game, expect the middleweight fighter to be cut from the UFC.

UFC Fight Night 24 results: Aaron Simpson def. Mario Miranda via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

UFC Fight Night 24 Results: Nik Lentz Guillotines Waylon Lowe Out Of Nowhere

The first fight at UFC Fight Night 24 is Waylon Lowe vs. Nik Lentz. This is a lightweight (155lbs) fight between two fighters who prefer wrestling and Greco clinching to striking or guard games. Lentz comes into this bout with a less than inspiring performance against Andre Winner. Waylon Lowe enters this contest after having a respectable showing against Willamy Freire.

It was a fight Lentz was on his way to losing. Down two rounds to one, Lentz was being dominated in every aspect of the game by a superior athlete. Lowe was controlling the where the fight took place with superior wrestling. He was also landing the harder, more damaging shots, especially in the third round.

Then came a tactical error. Lowe shot in, but Lentz, still hunting for the win, managed to sink in a guillotine choke and out of nowhere, force the top.

UFC Fight Night 24 results: Nik Lentz defeated Waylon Lowe via submission (guillotine choke) at 2:234 of round 3.
