The fifth fight of the night at Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson featured a lightweight tilt between late replacement Billy Vaughan and UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel. Vaughan had a huge opportunity to make a name for himself with a win over a notable opponent. Gurgel, by contrast, had quite a bit to lose. Already relegated to the undercard after being the focal point of UFC and Strikeforce events, the Rich Franklin jiu-jitsu coach and BJJ black belt was facing an absolutely must-win situation.
And that's exactly what Gurgel did: make quick work of Vaughan to put himself back in Strikeforce's good graces.
According to multiple reports, Gurgel was able to lock up with Vaughan's neck almost immediately. Vaughan right away recognized the trouble he was in and tried to fight out of it. Unfortunately, however, things only got worse as Gurgel jumped guard and deeply tightened the choke. From there Vaughan was forced to tap.
Strikeforce results: Jorge Gurgel defeated Billy Vaughan by submission (guillotine choke) at :44 of round one.
