The second fight of the night at UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields is Kyle Watson vs. John Makdessi. This is a lightweight fight (155lbs) and classic striker vs. grappler battle. Makdessi is the hometown favorite and a striking specialist. Watson, by contrast, is the American and prefers to wrestle and attempt submissions.

ROUND 1 - Watson starts off in southpaw, Makdessi in orthodox. Makdessi appears noticeably shorter than Watson, but faster as well. Side kick, but not hard, lands for Makdessi. Left hook finds the mark twice as Makdessi counter punches. Knee tap attempt for Watson goes nowhere. Left hook again lands for Watson as the American's head is straight in the air. Two hard left hooks and a right for Makdessi as Watson shows lethargic takedowns. 360 turning side kick finds the mark for Makdessi, but Watson stays strong in the pocket. Makdessi appears lighter on his feet, but the crowd is getting impatient. The takedown attempts of Watson go nowhere.

ROUND 2 - Makdessi showing a lot of movement early, but not throwing much. Left hook finds the mark twice for Makdessi as Watson charges in. Makdessi lands a twoce nice hard right straights followed by a left hook again as Watson charges in to close the distance. Off balance head kick for Watson partially lands. Spinning hook kick and side kick partially land for Makdessi. Again the left hook of Makdessi is landing, but doesn't seem to pack a ton of power. Hook kick misses for Makdessi as does a huge uppercut. More short hooks inside from Makdessi. And another and that one stumbles Watson. Makdessi showing excellent trunk movement as he evades the punches of Watson. Pot shotted rights and left from Makdessi to close the round.

ROUND 3 - Makdessi's kick is caught and he fires off several left hooks to evade, but Watson drives Makdessi into the fence. Makdessi escapes. Now Makdessi is being aggressive about his positioning. He's also turning up the volume of strikes. Watson is cut under the left eye. Holy god. Spinning back fist  off faked kick puts Watson out cold.
