The second fight of the pay-per-view broadcast of UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields is Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Jason Brilz. This is a light heavyweight bout (205lbs). Both of these men are wrestlers, although Brilz tends to be more of a submission hunter than Matyushenko. The Russian has better pure wrestling credentials, though, than Brilz.

The referee in charge of the action is Dan Miragliotta.

ROUND 1 - Both fighters come out right-handed and with awkward stances. Hard uppercut from Matyushenko sends Brilz to the mat. Matyushenko pounces with punches and hammerfists. That's it. Referee Dan Miragliotta jumps in and saves Brilz, although the stoppage is somewhat questionable.

On further review, it appears to not be an uppercut, but a hard inside punch that Brilz nearly walks into. Brilz also appears to have his eyes closed when he gets nailed.

Impressive victory for Matyushenko in a fight few gave much attention to leading into this event.

UFC 129 results: Vladimir Matyushenko defeats Jason Brilz via strikes (KO) at :20 of round 1.
