The co-main event of the night on the Showtime broadcast of Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley is Gilbert Melendez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri. This is a fight scheduled for five, five-round rounds and is for the Strikeforce lightweight title. This is a rematch from their 2006 PRIDE fight where Melendez won a close decision. The referee in charge of the action is Cecil Peoples.

ROUND 1 - Both fighters come out orthodox. Kawajiri drops Kawajiri with a right hand, but the Japanese fighter recovers. And another. Head kick partially lands for Kawajiri but Melendez drops Kawajiri with punches  and takes the Japanese fighter's back. Kawajiri partially stands but he's still getting outstruck. Kawajiri looks wobbled. Kawajiri appears to have a big problem with distance. Kawajiri desperation shoots after eating huge punches and is pushed to his back by Melendez. Melendez unloads devastating elbows on top and the referee sees enough. The fight is stopped.

Strikeforce Diaz vs. Daley results: Gilbert Melendez defeats Tatsuya Kawajiri by TKO (strikes, ref stoppage) at 3:14 of round 1.
