UFC On Versus 5 Fight Card: Charlies Oliveria In For Injured Paul Taylor Against Donald Cerrone

Injuries continue to plague the UFC's summer matchmaking efforts, but this time the injury replacement arguably enhances the quality of the card. According to the UFC's Twitter feed, Paul Taylor - who replacing John Makdessi - is out his bout with Donald Cerrone at UFC on Versus 5. Filling in will be UFC on Versus 4 competitor Charles Oliveira. To wit:

AND THEN Paul Taylor got injured so now it's Charles Oliveira vs. Donald Cerrone in August and FOTN much!?!? @cowboycerrone @C_Oliveira_UFCless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Oliveira enters this bout after having his initial victory over Nik Lentz at UFC on Versus 4 turned into a 'no contest'. Oliveira hurt Lentz with an illegal knee before applying a fight-ending rear naked choke submission.

Cerrone enters this bout having most-recently defeated Wagner Rocha at UFC 131 in June.

UFC On Versus 5 Fight Card: Ronny Markes In For Injured Stephan Bonnar

Bad news for Stephan Bonnar. The season 1 cast member of Spike TV's 'The Ultimate Fighter' and UFC light heavyweight is out of his bout at UFC on Versus 5 due to undisclosed injury. According to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), newcomer Ronny Markes steps in to fill his slot on the fight card. UFC.com has the news:

With Stephan Bonnar sidelined by injury, 11-1 Brazilian newcomer Ronny Markes has verbally agreed to step up to the plate to face Karlos Vemola on August 14th's UFC on Versus card in Milwaukee.

Sherdog has a nice description of who Markes is:

Markes, 23, rides a four-fight winning streak heading into his showdown with Vemola. The reigning light heavyweight king of Shooto Brazil, Markes has only lost once as a professional. The Nova Uniao representative holds nine of his 11 career wins by either knockout or submission and most recently earned a unanimous decision victory over former Pride standout Paulo Filho in August.

Also announced for this card: Kyle Noke vs. Tom Lawlor in UFC middleweight action. The news, also from UFC.com:

Two fan favorites from TUF seasons past will face off in a middleweight bout this summer. Dana White confirmed today that Aussie Kyle Noke and "Filthy" Tom Lawlor have agreed to meet at UFC on Versus 5. UFC On Versus 5: Alex "Bruce Leroy" Caceres Vs. Leonard Garcia, Joseph Benavidez Vs. Eddie Wineland Official

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) added two fights today to their UFC on Versus 5 fight card in August. Two featherweights and two bantaweights were added to the card, the latter of surprising significance for an event this small. UFC.com has the news:

The Ultimate Fighter 12's Alex "Bruce Leroy" Caceres will look for his first UFC win on August 14th in Milwaukee, when he faces veteran action hero Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia in a bout verbally agreed to late Tuesday night.

Benavidez vs. Wineland On
Two bantamweight powerhouses will go at it as Joseph Benavidez and Eddie Wineland have verbally agreed to face each other at the UFC on Versus show, confirmed Dana White today. Both WEC vets are coming off three-round battles at UFC 128 and recently sat next to one another at the UFC Fighter Summit.

Caceres is hanging onto his UFC career by a thread given how badly he looked against Mackens Semerzier. Garcia also needs a win after being Twistered by Chang Sung Jung.

I'm not sure what sitting next to one another at the fighter summit has to do with anything, but Wineland vs. Benavidez is an excellent fight. Benavidez will have some advantages given his teammate Urijah Faber went three rounds with him. But it's a fight that will serve to position the winner two or so fights away from title contention. It's a clear decider of divisional hierarchy, although matters become complicated should Faber defeat Dominick Cruz and Benavidez continues to accrue wins.

The UFC on Versus 5 fight card continues to expand. The UFC announced today a middleweight match-up between two prospects who've had inconsistent performances inside the Octagon. UFC.com has the news:

After back-to-back Fight of the Night awards, Jared Hamman will test the waters at 185 pounds this August 14th against former Ultimate Fighter finalist C.B. Dollaway.

"Two time Fight of the Night winner Jared ‘The Messenger’ Hamman has verbally agreed to face two time Submission of the Night winner CB ‘The Doberman’ Dollaway in his middleweight debut August 14 in Milwaukee," said UFC President Dana White.

Hamman enters this bout after a losing effort against Kyle Kingsbury at UFC Fight Night 22. Dollaway will meet Hamman after being stopped in the first round by Mark Munoz at UFC on Versus 3.

UFC On Versus 5 Fight Card: Jason Reinhardt Vs. Edwin Figueroa Official

The second UFC on Versus card of the summer continues to fill out. The August event is headlined by a welterweight title fight between Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle. Now the UFC announces a bantamweight bout has been added to the card between journeyman Jason Reinhardt and the surprisingly scrappy Edwin Figueroa. To wit:

Veteran Jason Reinhardt will test bantamweight waters this summer when he battles 135-pound prospect Edwin Figueroa on the UFC on Versus card in Milwaukee.

"Jason Reinhardt and Edwin Figueroa have verbally agreed to face each other in a bantamweight bout, August 14th in Milwaukee," said UFC President Dana White. "With 20 wins, Reinhardt has never gone the distance and Figueroa is coming off a sensational "Fight of The Night" performance against Michael McDonald."

Brent Brookhouse is not exactly excited about the bout:

Reinhardt is making his debut at bantamweight after losing his last bout in 48 seconds to Tiequan Zhang at UFC 127. Reinhardt entered that bout with a stellar 20-1 record. He had previously fought in the UFC at UFC 78 when Joe Lauzon tapped him in a minute and fourteen seconds. Jason took the hard road after the Lauzon fight. Submitting Cody Larson (then 0-0, retired 0-5) and Marcus Hermann (then 2-9, retired 2-11) and taking three years off before returning to the UFC to "test" Zhang.

All I'm trying to say is, let's not get to excited about "20 wins" and "never going the distance" when only three of those wins were against guys with career winning records, two of those coming more than a decade ago and the other coming against a guy whose career didn't last two years.

Figueroa's gutsy effort against McDonald means a whole lot more to me than empty numbers.

UFC On Versus 5: Danny Castillo vs. Jacob Volkmann, Dan Hardy vs. Chris Lytle Added To Fight Card

Two outstanding fights have been added to the UFC On Versus 5 fight card. In a clash of lightweights, BloodyElbow.com has the news:

UFC President Dana White has announced another intriguing matchup for the August 14th event in Milwaukee, as two lightweight up and comers collide.

"In a battle between two top notch wrestlers, Danny "Last Call" Castillo will face Jacob "Christmas" Volkmann August 14 in Milwaukee," said White.

Danny Castillo is on a three-fight win streak after back-to-back losses. A win over Volkmann isn't necessarily a guarantee he'll face the upper tier of the division unless it's supremely dominant. Still, it's a gritty challenge against a defensively strong opponent. Keep in mind Volkmann is on a three-fight win streak as well.

To headline the card, a very intriguing fight has been announced via This Is Nottingham:

Nottingham's Dan Hardy will top the bill at a big UFC show in America.  Hardy, nicknamed 'the Outlaw', will fight American Chris Lytle at 'UFC Live' in Milwaukee on August 14, and will train in Las Vegas in the build-up to it.
He said: "It is exactly the fight I wanted. Chris tries to finish you throughout the fight, and I'm ready for a blaze of glory.

"This is the kind of fight you can define your career around. You can guarantee Chris Lytle will bring it, that he will have an exciting fight.

I suspect Hardy believes Lytle's willingness to trade on the feet for purse bonuses will compliment his preferred style of fighting. He may well be right. But this seems like an awfully dangerous fight for Hardy and a further indication of just how deep the UFC welterweight division actually is. Lytle has fight ending power and both a technical yet daring jiu-jitsu game. Hardy might be considered the favorite by some, but this is a pick 'em in my mind.

Jim Miller Vs. Ben Henderson Set For UFC On Verus 5

An excellent lightweight match-up has been announced for the UFC On Versus 5 fight card. Jim Miller, coming off a dominant win over Kamal Shalorus at UFC 128, will face Ben Henderson, who notched a win in his UFC debut over grappling standout Mark Bocek. Of all places, The Asbury Park Press has the scoop:

The Whippany-based mixed martial artist is expected to face former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Ben Henderson, sources close to the UFC confirmed to New Jersey Press Media late Tuesday.

The bout is scheduled for "UFC on Versus 5" on Aug. 14 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis.

Thus far, here's the known fight card for UFC on Versus 5:

Duane Ludwig vs. Amir Sadollah
Cole Miller vs. T.J. O'Brien
Stephan Bonnar vs. Karlos Vemola
Jim Miller vs. Ben Henderson

Without knowing what UFC brass will do, it's conceivable the winner of this fight could earn a title shot against either the winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard or a title shot-eliminator against the winner of Anthony Pettis vs. Clay Guida.
