UFC 131 Injuries And Medical Suspensions

The Vancouver Athletic Commission today released the names of those fighters receiving medical suspensions after June 11's UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin in the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Several of the bouts featured dramatic knock out finishes and, unsurprisingly, a number of the fighters have been required to receive follow up examinations from their personal physicians.

Here is the complete list of suspensions:

Darren Elkins -- Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.

Michihiro Omigawa -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

Aaron Rosa -- Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.

Joey Beltran -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

Jason Young -- Suspended for 180 days pending foot x-ray; if cleared, suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.

Dustin Poirier -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

James Head -- Suspended 60 days with 45 days no contact.

Nick Ring -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

Mike Massenzio -- Suspended for 30 days with 21 days no contact.

Krzysztof Soszynski -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

Chris Weidman -- Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.

Jesse Bongfeldt -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

Yves Edwards -- Suspended 45 days with 30 days no contact.

Sam Stout -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

Vagner Rocha -- Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.

Donald Cerrone -- Suspended for a mandatory 9 days of rest.

Dave Herman -- Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.

Jon Olav Einemo -- Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact.

UFC 131 Preliminary Card Fights On Spike TV Pull 1.6 Million Viewers

The ratings are in for the Spike TV portion of the UFC 131: Carwin vs. dos Santos event. According to Spike TV officials, the preliminary fights earned a 1.0 household rating. Specifically, they pulled a 1.30 in men 18 to 49 and 1.34 in men 18 to 34. The average audience for the hour-long program (beginning at 8pm ET) was 1.6 million viewers.

Among basic cable networks, Spike ranked first for both aforementioned demographics in that time period. The quarter hour total viewers are as follows:

8 pm ET to 8:15 pm ET: 1,258,000
8:16 pm ET to 8:30 pm ET: 1,457,000
8:31 pm ET to 8:45 pm ET: 1,728,000
8:46 pm ET to 9:00 pm ET: 1,767,000

These numbers are up from UFC 130 and historically a strong showing for the program:

Nice left-right from Maia. Maia pressing Munoz up against the fence. Knee to the midsection. And another to the thigh. Valel breaks them up. Maia landing at will from outside. ROUND 1 - Hard leg kick to open from Cerrone. Inside kick bounces off Rocha's cup. Deans steps in, but Rocha's ready to go quickly. Leg kick from Cerrone. Rocha eats a knee to the gut as he steps in. Another hard leg kick. Rocha outclassed in the first minute. Cerrone throws a lazy kick, and Rocha takes him down. He breaks the rubber guard, and throws a handful of punches. Cerrone back to his feet. Stuffs a takedown, but he's up against the fence. He escapes from the single and we're back center. Rocha's overhand right just misses. Rocha throws a knee to the midsection. Leg kicks all round from Cerrone. Ending every combination with a kick. He stuffs another takedown. Rocha doing nothing to set up his takedowns. Lead left uppercut and right leg kick for Cerrone. One minutes to go. Cerrones catches a body kick and sweeps the other leg. Lets him back up. Rocha is clueless as to how to stop these kicks. They trade big blows. Another combo ends with a leg kick from Cerrone.

ROUND 2 - Right back to the leg kicks. Rocha trying to hide a limp. Rocha steps in and Cerrone bends his leg with another leg kick. Suprise. Another leg kick. Rocha dives in, grabs a hold of both legs and momentarily has Cerrone off balance. Up against the fence now. Cerrone powers away and slips his leg out. Rocha physically reacting to these kicks now. Rocha checked two kicks, but the damage has already been done. Rocha looks to pull guard, but Rogan and Goldberg think he got punched on his way in. Back to their feet. Cerrone's probably thrown an equal amount of punches and leg kicks. Rocha has no answer for these kicks. Rocha pulling guard now. Cerrone sprawls, Rocha tries to pull guard, but Cerrone stands. Another thudding leg kick as the round ends.

ROUND 3 - This is academic at this point. Just waiting to see if Cerrone can finish. Herb Dean warns Rocha for throwing with an open hand. Cerrone aims his kick for the head. This is becoming a routine of shot, sprawl, combo, leg kick. Spinning back kick not even close from Rocha. Cerrone looking to box more. Rocha's switched his stance. Switches back. Leg kick. Cerrone sprawls and almost takes Rocha's head off with a punch as he pulls guard. Cerrone catches a kick and sweeps him again. Leg kick and Rocha grimaces, switches his stance. Another sprawl. Rocha tries to dive into guard. Crowd boos. I'm sure we'll hear complaints about Cerrone not finishing, but Rocha's taking these kicks well, all things considered. One-two nails Rocha on the chin. Stiff leg kick with 15 seconds left. Cerrone's punches finding a home. He knocks him down, but calls for Cerrone to stand.

Edwards slips a couple punches and counters with a straight left. Slips another and lands a two-punch combo. Stout with a right hand. Edwards blocks a head kick. Stout blocks one of his own. Edwards grabs a single. Struggle before Edwards puts Stout on the mat. Edwards working for a pass. Buries his head into Stout's chest and throws right hands over. Left hand. Jesse Bongfeldt and Chris Weidman open the Spike TV prelims in a middleweight bout. Jesse Bongfeldt fought to a draw against Rafael Natal in his debut at UFC 124. Chris Weidman overwhelmed Alessio Sakara en route to a decision in his UFC debut at UFC on Versus 3. Our referee for the bout is Jerin Valel.

Nick Ring and James Head meet in the fourth fight of the evening at middleweight. Nick Ring was a member of the Ultimate Fighter 11 cast, and defeated Riki Fukuda in a controversial split decision in his UFC debut. James Head is making his UFC debut.Our referee for this bout is Herb Dean.

ROUND 1 - Ring throws two quick kicks. And another. And another. And another. Head checks a kick. Ring's head kick falls short. Thai plum for Ring. Lands a knee to the midsection. And another. A final knee to the head. Head steps in with a straight right. Ring goes to the body with a left hand. Ring throwing lots of leg kicks. Ring with a takedown, and he moves straight into side control. Herb Dean warns him not to grab the shorts. Ring moves into north-south momentarily before Head rolls back into guard. Ring loses position and we're back standing. Knee lands for head. One-two lands for Ring. A right hand sends Ring down to the mat. Head engages. Ring works his way back to his feet, but Head is capitalizing on a dazed fighter. Ring with a shot to the midsection that seems to halt Head. Right hand hurts Ring. Knees from the clinch. Ring drives through a desperate takedown. Head taking deep breaths from the bottom. Ring lands a couple punches as the round ends.

Herb Dean stops the bout to allow a doctor check. Dean tells Head the doctor cannot stop the bleeding, asks if he can see and if he wants to fight. Head affirms that he does. Fight restarts in side control. Short elbows from Ring. The blood's dripping right into Head's eyes. Head trying to turn into a turtle, but Ring forces him back down. Ring landing punches to the midsection as he moves into north-south. He has Head's left arm pinned down.

Dustin Poirier and Jason Young meet in the third bout of the evening at featherweight. Dustin Poirier derailed Josh Grispi in an upset at UFC 125. Jason Young is making his UFC debut. Our referee for this bout is "Big" John McCarthy.

Referee calls for action, prompting Beltran to flail punches. Rosa lands a knee to the midsection. Referee asks for action again. They disengage and trade shots Frye-Takayama style. Back on the fence. Beltran landing short punches to the obliques. Rosa lands a leg kick to the thigh as they separate. Rosa comes forward with a four-punch combo. Two more right hands. Jab from Rosa. Right hand from Beltran lands flush. Leg kick. Beltran has Rosa back up against the fence. One minute remaining. Short left hand. Right hand to the body. Rosa with short uppercuts. UFC 131 Results: Darren Elkins Edges Michihiro Omigawa With Controversial Decision

Michihiro Omigawa and Darren Elkins open up the night for UFC 131: Carwin vs. Dos Santos in a featherweight fight. Omigawa enters the fight coming off a loss to Chad Mendes in his return to the UFC. Elkins was submitted by Charles Oliveira in his last fight at UFC on Versus 2. The referee for this bout is Kevin Dornan.
