I usually would keep a photo like this above the fold or jump just to gross out unsuspecting readers looking for Smackgirl fight card updates. Today, though, I don't have the heart to horrify you. If you follow the link after the jump, you'll see season 13 cast member of Spike TV's 'The Ultimate Fighter' Ryan McGivillray's nose. As the headline of the post indicates, it's an absolute disaster. Stephen Douglas of The Big Lead gropes for larger narrative about the injury:
I have a more simple answer to explain why we’ve had so many fight cancellations this year – You’re fairly likely to get hurt when your day job consists of people hitting, kicking, throwing and twisting your body.
Take former TUF 13 castmember, Ryan McGillivray’s nose for example. McGillivray (11-5-1, 0-1 UFC) doesn’t have a fight coming up in the UFC or any other promotion based on anything I’ve heard. Yet here he is with a smashed nose courtesy of the knee of one of his teammates. McGillivray is heading home to have surgery today. So if he were scheduled to fight, he would have to cancel. Injuries have always been a part of the sport, I just think we pay more attention now that we’re writing everything down.
McGillivray lives in Canada, so I'm assuming this sort of injury is covered by the state's relatively generous insurance program. It's moments like these where I'm a) grateful Zuffa covers their fighters with accident insurance and b) B.J. Penn was correct when he said if you care about the way you look, MMA is not the sport for you.
