Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Brazil. UFC 134: Rio will take place at Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena on Aug. 27, 2011.
Joining UFC President Dana White in making the announcement were UFC chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, Rio mayor Eduardo Paes, UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie and current UFC fighters Anderson Silva, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Jose Aldo and Vitor Belfort.
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will defend his title against the last man to defeat him in Yushin Okami. The pair fought in January 2006 for Hawaii’s ‘Rumble on the Rock’ promotion during the first round of a 175lbs tournament. After pulling Okami into his active guard, Silva struck him in the face with an upkick, incapacitating Okami and ending the fight. Because the blow that ended the fight was found to be illegal, as a fighter cannot kick his opponent in the head while both knees are on the ground, Silva was disqualified.
Okami was offered recovery time and the opportunity to continue the fight, but opted for the disqualification victory. He has also recently spent considerable time training with Chael Sonnen, who was on his way to a five-round decision victory to take Silva’s title at UFC 117 before he was submitted in the final minutes of the fifth round.
After losing his light heavyweight title to Jon Jones, Rua returns to competition in a rematch with 'Ultimate Fighter' Season 1 winner and former champion Forrest Griffin. The pair fought in September of 2007 resulting in Griffin scoring a submission victory over Rua in his UFC debut.
Former UFC and PRIDE heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira makes his first return to the Octagon in over 18 months to face rising star Brendan Schaub. After a layoff that included multiple surgeries on his lower body, Nogueira will fight in his native Brazil for only the first time in his hall-of-fame career. Former ‘Ultimate Fighter’ finalist Schaub will look to make it 2-0 against former PRIDE champions following his ‘Knockout of the Night’ performance against Micko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic at UFC 128.
