UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre will defend his title against Jake Shields in the main event at UFC 129 from the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada. This will be the sixth defense of the welterweight title for St. Pierre. UFC 129 will be the promotion's first event in the province of Ontario. The event sold 55,000 tickets, positioning it to be the most-attended UFC and MMA event ever.
A championship bout between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and No. 1 contender Mark Hominick will serve as the co-main event. Since becoming the WEC featherweight champion in 2009, Aldo became the UFC's first 145lbs champion when the two promotions merged in late 2010. Aldo will defend his title for the first time during his UFC debut.
The event will also feature a bout between UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and former light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida. With rumors of a looming retirement and roles in film, Apr. 30 could be the last time 'The Natural' steps into the Octagon. Looking to play spoiler to the likely farewell will be Machida, who, after back-to-back losses will be looking to get his career back on track at UFC 129.
'The Ultimate Fighter' season winner Nate Diaz will appear in a preliminary bout with Rory MacDonald. Diaz looks to rebound from a tough decision loss to the undefeated Dong Hyun Kim while MacDonald looks to get back on track after dropping his last fight to Carlos Condit.
Former WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson will make his UFC debut in a bout with tough veteran Mark Bocek. Henderson has not competed since loosing his WEC title to Anthony Pettis in the promotion's historic final event. Bocek will look to emerge from this fight with the added notoriety of defeating a fighter of Henderson's caliber.
