A year ago, we selected the inaugural class of fighters that would make up the first edition of the World MMA Scouting Report. It's been a gratifying experience to see some of the athletes we selected go on to succeed in major fight opportunities...
MMA Nation Round-Up provides you with daily coverage of the latest in news, multimedia, and analysis throughout the world of combat sports. This morning we look over all the last-minute details before The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale, from weigh-ins to interviews, and everything in between.
Amazon Forest Combat's first event went down last night in Brazil. Karo Parisyan dropped a split decision to Jordan Smith, while Maiquel Falcao and Drew Fickett lost. Satoshii Ishii went to an inexplicable draw with Paulo Filho, and Masakatsu Ueda beat Royler Gracie in the main event.
It's been a long road for Karo Parisyan. After public battles with anxiety, addiction, and two cuts from the UFC, the judoka at last appears to have escaped the demons he once fought. Parisyan spoke to MMA Nation about his past, present, and future as he prepares for a bout against Jordan Smith at Amazon Forest Combat on Wednesday.
Amazon Forest Combat will stage its first show on September 14th, and is looking to have some big names on the card. Satoshi Ishii vs. Paulo Filho is already signed as is Royler Gracie, and the promotion wants to bring in Nate Marquardt among others.
Next on our list, at #6, is Team Serra-Longo product Costantinos Philippou (6-1). Like Victor O'Donnell and Jordan Smith, he was also one of the defeated during the elimination round on The Ultimate Fighter 11. His opponent, Jon "Leonidas" Henle, wasn't favored to win, but he proved that anything can happen as he caught Philippou with an armbar in the second round.
We've already featured one of those fighters on our list in Victor O'Donnell, and ranked at #7 on our list was one of the show's more promising prospects, Jordan Smith (15-1-1). The twenty-six year old's knockout loss to Brad Tavares was shocking when we consider Smith's experience versus Tavares' novice standing in the sport, but Smith may be on track to return to the UFC in 2011.
