Following a horrific crash at the Las Vegas Indy 300, the final race of the IndyCar season, driver Dan Wheldon has passed away at the age of 33. Below the jump is a video of the crash focused on Wheldon's car that shows how his car went up into the air, then made contact with the catch fence above the SAFER barrier.
WARNING: This is extremely graphic and, once again, took a man's life.
The SAFER barrier helped to keep other drivers from sustaining injuries like Wheldon's, but Wheldon's car went over the barrier, hitting the fence hard, cockpit-first.
Wheldon's car was one of 15 cars involved in the wreck, and he was one of three drivers who had to go to the hospital with serious injuries. Drivers were informed of Wheldon's death in a private meeting, at which point they decided not to continue the race. Instead, all of the drivers came out an decided to do a five-lap salute in Wheldon's memory.
