First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, will serve as grand marshals for next week's NASCAR championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
But before you jump to conclusions about NASCAR's motivations (Are they campaigning for the Democrats???), chill out for a second: Obama and Biden are showing up as part of their "Joining Forces" initiative to support military families.
Prior to the race, Obama and Biden will attend a barbecue lunch with local service members and their families. They will then invite a military family to join them in saying "Gentlemen, start your engines."
"We are honored that First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden will be joining us as we crown the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion," Homestead-Miami Speedway president Matthew Becherer said. "Most importantly, we are pleased that they are both coming to Homestead-Miami Speedway to personally thank the men and women who sacrifice so much to ensure our freedom and allow us to enjoy events like Ford Championship Weekend."
The Joining Forces campaign is designed to recognize military families for the sacrifices they make when troops are called to action.
