Pocono Raceway Weather Forecast: Bulk of the Rain Saturday

Conditions in Long Pond, PA: Click here for Current Weather ConditionsLook at Doppler Radar | Mobile Friendly Site | Mobile Radar

As we continue to fine tune the forecast for this weekend at Pocono rain continues to be a threat but now the window looks more like Saturday into Sunday morning or midday. I still think timing of when the storms end isn't cut in stone but most models agree rain is out by early afternoon if not sooner. This being said, if I had tickets for this Sunday's race I'd still go, I'd just be prepared for a possible delay and make sure I have some rain gear... just in case.

So to answer some of the questions you may have: Is the race a wash and going to run on Monday? The likelihood is low, there easily could be delays if the rain doesn't end in the morning and carries over into the early afternoon. Then that would be NASCAR decision on what they would do.

If you had to call it when will the rain end on Sunday? If I had to give a specific time I would say midday or noon. It could be earlier than that but I am being cautious, but I am starting get the feeling that they can and will get Sunday's race in.

Just so you know

You called Dover a wash for Sunday a few weeks back and that was even by looking at the radar on race day. I would be careful because Pocono is a long marathon and NASCAR will likely call the race if the weather isn’t helping. That race lasts four hours meaning that if rain stops at noon right on the dot, then it is 2:30 hours of track drying, and that means that NASCAR would be lucky to get a winner at 7 PM with a 3 PM start time. There is a 50 percent chance of racing on Monday.

You are about Dover

First of all I can’t get them all right but I know I have a better than 80% on my forecasts. Also keep in mind that for Dover I had very limited internet and I usually only had about 20 min to look at data since I was moving from Rochester NY to Twin Falls ID for a new job.

I am working on my forecast for Pocono as we speak. The ear marks show enough window for some racing. I could see us getting it in if storms don’t pop up but if there is a shower that washes out before half way I wouldn’t be surprised if we run Monday. This is a tough forecast. Slow moving fronts can cause havoc. It is the nature of what I do.

I don’t get paid for these forecasts. You really aren’t going to find a meteorologist more dedicated to forecasting all the races all the series every weekend than me. Just saying.

Actually you committed a cardinal sin

You basically told people that the spring Dover race was pretty much a wash, even with a dry radar. That might have caused bad attendance at the track. Despite the mistakes that you and your fellow weathermen do make, I do appreciate your work and look forward to the NASCAR forecast each week. Thanks

I also think it wouldn’t hurt to give a tutorial on weather forecasting and what goes into a forecast.

That's a Big Charge To Level on Someone

Knowing how many people read my forecasts on this site and my personal site to put sole responsibility of poor attendance at Dover on me is a big claim and I hope you have the stats and info to back it up. Please share it with me at wxman.com@gmail.com

I called it like I see it and I was wrong. It is an unfortunate side effect about the business I am in. I do not try to keep anyone from the race. I think about that with every forecast I make but I have to be honest with what I see. When I put a forecast together I have no agenda, I am being as honest as I can. I do this because I love this sport and I love forecasting the weather. Back to the Dover race, it probably would have been smarter to just skip that week knowing how busy I was as I moved across the country and that i wasn’t going to be able to put the full 100% attention to the forecast that I feel most comfortable with.

I will apologize again if I kept you or anyone from going to Dover, I am sorry. I can’t change the past I can only learn from it. Meteorology is the study of weather and we are constantly learning. Not many jobs predict the future and even if I am right 99.9% of the time. People will judge me off the 0.1% I was wrong and label me a failure.

Well

At least you got to learn from it.

The Dover area radar was clear for that 24 hours with most of the rain in the New York area. I am saying that you are a failure on that weekend and could have made a better forecast. On the bright side, at least you are not the meteorologist who advised the NFL to postpone a game between Philadelphia and Minnesota due to an impending blizzard that dropped only six inches of snow on the area and cause Governor Ed Rendell to call the NFL wimps for postponing the game.

You Need To Know

Just because a Radar is dry 24 hours before a race doesn’t mean it won’t rain. I got it wrong and with a move across country and limited access to the internet and weather date I should have just skipped that weekend. You’re right I was wrong, but I learn from every forecast I make. Weather forecasting is and never has been an exact science. If I could go back I wouldn’t have called it a wash. I did watch the radar during that race and rain came close that much I know. Also last weekend at Pocono, sure it didn’t rain at the track until afterwards but had the storms to the north been 10 miles farther south it would have been a different story.

Thank you and ready to move on beyond that forecast
