Indy 500 2012 Update: Japanese Driver Takuma Sato Leads With 55 Laps To Go

An unlikely and surprising story is developing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway today, where Japan's Takuma Sato is leading the Indy 500 with just 55 laps remaining.

Three-quarters of the way through the 500-mile race, Sato is stunning the field by running up front for lap after lap. Three-time defending IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti is second, followed by Scott Dixon.

Sato, who used to race in Formula One, is in his third season racing IndyCars but has just one podium finish in 38 starts.

IndyCar called for a caution in the middle of green-flag pit stops because Sebastian Saavedra stalled on the exit of pit lane with 55 laps to go.

Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay experienced a mechanical failure on his car – something broke in the rear end – and he was forced to retire from the race.

Ex-Formula One star Rubens Barrichello also led a couple laps in his first Indy 500, but is now 16th.
