Mark Martin backed up his fast practice lap from Friday to win the pole position for Sunday's FedEx 400 at Dover International Speedway, beating Jimmie Johnson as the final car to make an attempt in Saturday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying.
Martin's pole was his third of the season in just 10 attempts, as the veteran driver is racing a part-time schedule this season.
Johnson looked to have the pole if he could survive just one more car, but Martin beat him by five-thousandths of a second with a speed of 158.297 mph.
"I left a little on the table," Johnson said. "Mark found five-thousandths. ... Mark is one heck of a wheelman, and he continues to show it."
Ryan Newman will start third, followed by Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth.
Young drivers Josh Wise and Cole Whitt failed to qualify for Sunday's race.
