NASCAR Richmond Race Start Time Delayed By Rain

Stay connected with SB Nation

If you were hoping to tune in at 7:30 p.m. Eastern to see the NASCAR Richmond race on ABC, you might be disappointed.

Heavy rain associated with a cold front sweeping across the East Coast on Saturday evening has delayed the start of the final Sprint Cup Series race before the Chase begins – the Federated Auto Parts 400 – and it's unclear if the weather will move out in time for NASCAR to race tonight.

Driver introductions have been delayed indefinitely, and NASCAR has said it is in a "hold situation" at the current time.

If the race is postponed, it will air at 1 p.m. Sunday on ESPN. The weather is expected to be better all day on Sunday, but NASCAR would prefer to race tonight and and not go head-to-head against the NFL's opening day.

The only other rainout this season was the Daytona 500, which was moved to a Monday night in February.

UPDATE: NASCAR is planning to have drivers fire their engines at 9:15 p.m. Eastern tonight.
