Danica Patrick and Jeff Gordon locked up the top two spots in the Daytona 500, but the rest of the field will battle for positioning in the big race in the 2013 Budweiser Duel at Daytona on Thursday.
The 2013 Budweiser Duel at Daytona will take place on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Daytona International Speedway. The pair of qualifying races, each 60 laps and 150 miles, will determine the rest of the starting grid beyond the inside and outside pole winners, which were set after the qualifying session on Sunday.
Danica Patrick earned pole position by dominating qualifying, while Jeff Gordon took the other spot on the first row. Patrick and Gordon will participate in the Duel, but they'll likely be in warmup mode while the rest of the field battles for positioning for the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24. As SB Nation's Matt Weaver notes, the Duel presents a dilemma for both Patrick and Gordon, who will lose their Sunday position if their cars are wrecked and they're forced to go to a backup for the 500.
Tony Stewart won the first race in the 2012 Duel, while Matt Kenseth finished first in the nightcap and eventually took home the checkered flag in the Daytona 500. Stewart finished 16th.
SPEED Channel will have coverage of the Budweiser Duel, which is slated to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
