Mobile, Ala. - Racing has always been praised for generating some of the most unique and colorful trophies in all of sports. But the trophy created for the second annual ARCA Mobile 200 at Mobile International Speedway might be the best example yet.
Crosley Radio will present the winner of the ARCA Mobile 200 with a full-sized 42" iJuke Deluxe Jukebox. The trophy joins the Martinsville grandfather clock, Nashville guitar and Dover Monster as one of the most unique prizes in motorsports today.
"This is just awesome," said Tommy Praytor, ARCA Mobile 200 promoter. "We really appreciate Crosley Radio providing this one of a kind trophy for our race. The drivers are ready to rock and roll and this trophy will pick up the beat next Saturday."
Praytor, who serves as the race strategist for his son -- Thomas Praytor in ARCA, first came across the idea while his team was parked next to the Crosley team hauler two weeks ago at Daytona International Speedway. Crosley CEO Bo LeMastus also competed in the season-opening ARCA race, starting 22nd and finished 16th.
LeMastus' crew members pulled the iJuke out of the hauler for display and Praytor says he immediately knew that he had to make it the Mobile trophy. LeMastus agreed and a deal was quickly put together.
The trophy is based on a nostalgic jukebox design but the interior is full of modern technologies like an AM/FM radio, CD player, MP3/WAV reader plus an iPod docking station.
Frank Kimmel is the nine-time ARCA Racing Series champion and is competing in his 23rd season in the division. He's won 76 races, second all-time to Iggy Katana, but says winning next week's race would give him one of the coolest trophies in motorsports.
"This is just really cool," Kimmel told SB Nation. "I'm really looking forward to racing at Mobile but now, with a jukebox for a trophy, it's going to be a really special win for someone. Our team is working really hard to give me a winning Toyota and now I have even more incentive to go for the win."
The ARCA Mobile 200 is set for March 9 and is the second race of the 2013 season. The race will not be televised but will have complete flag-to-flag coverage on the ARCA website. Where does the event's jukebox trophy rank amongst current trophies in motorsports?
